the stupid thing is now bmw is beginning to advertise to promote FWD like with pictures of a frog with his rear legs in the front and stuff. they are just about making money now....
3:03 try that episode on snow or ice. FWD will accelerate faster and RWD will spin on place. RWD is good only on tarmac. Exception is when RWD car has a rear positioned engine.
In the '80s, Audi discovered how to make a lightweight AWD system, unfortunately BMW didn't figured it out yet, that's why YouTube is full of videos with BMW's not going anywhere in the snow. FWD sucks balls, and it is only a cheaper alternative for who can't afford an AWD
Drive train do NOT matter to 90 over percent of the general drivers. On snow, 4wd beats the crap out of rwd! So does that make BMW a crappier car than Subaru? The drive train to me matters when i apply power when traction is compromised, but todays electronic interference cuts off any hard attempt to power off a bend excitingly with a base model BMW or Mercedes. So does the drive train matter to me? NO! But I park easier with more castor on rwd cars.
rear wheel drive is also a heck of a lot better when it comes to pulling off, it just goes really quickly, from 0mph-put ur foot down and ur off with no wheel spin
front wheel drive its wheel spin, wheelspin, and then your off!
@frozenman82 thrust me , Xdrve is useless offroad:) se videos about x5 offroad:) if i had a car, i would definietly want a 4WD one, audi quatro, subaru imprezza, legacy, or even a Lancia Delta integrale(historic ralyl car)

@Guitarnoob99 The electronics don't make up for physics, they simply make it more difficult to overstep the mark. An equivalent (in power and weight) front wheel drive car will still struggle for grip under acceleration and have a greater tendency to understeer. Stability control applies the brakes on the side that the car is turning, this slows the car while correcting it's understeer. In equivalent situations a front wheel drive car, regardless of technology will be slower and less responsive.
@jcadlols That all being said, that doesn't take a good all wheel drive system into consideration. In some cases they can be more responsive, however they usually feel more artificial. But awd will always have more traction than rear wheel drive (in one particular car).
awd has better acceleration and top speed because 4 wheels are doing the work.which is better? 2 people or 4? 4 is better so thats why lambourginis and buggatis and skylines are awd.but one problem- they have understeer.

Yeah, let's see that bimmer vs that Audi in some REAL snow, not that barely covered crap shown in the video. RWD = win for everything except snow. /story Don't try to play it off like RWD is even remotely capable in heavy snow - it's not, why? You have no immediate control over the direction of the driving force - Ex. If you're sideways on a hill, the back will drift down - regardless of where the front wheels are pointing, in a FWD, you just point up, and you can cross laterally..
This is awesome! Personally, I hate FWD. I have never, nor will I ever own a wrong-wheel-drive car. Every vehicle I've ever owned has been either RWD or 4x4. And guess what, I've never been stuck in the snow. FWD is just a crutch for those who don't know how to drive a real RWD car in bad weather. @SuperStankful You can't. Well...if you sling it around a curve and yank the parking brake...maybe...
In order to "drift", power must be going to the rear wheels. FWD cars can not drift. In a FWD car, you can't "hold" the drift because there's no power going to the rear wheels to keep the rear end out. It's not possible. That's why there are no FWD drift cars.
@tjhaywood100 ...im so sick of having to deal with people like you... from this point on im just gonna say rwd cars cant drift awd cant either and only fwd can.
and essential question is: how much is important all of this in a every day road car?
NOT AT ALL. good chassis on fwd will give just about enough of stability and who in the earth races from traffic lights except some boy racing morons. and you'll be safer in wet and snow ehich is more important than lap times
I was a big fan of FWD sor a long time and denying RWD to be even a close to FWD.. until I bought a BMW... No doubt that the RWD is better in every way.Even in winter I like rear wheel drive car more.U just have to get use to it.
I have over 16years of driving xp, I drove different cars, but RWD is the best so far.
Plus, the look, sound, and performance of all fwd cars just don't do anything for me. If I wanted power from my front wheels, there better be power from the rear as well. I hate the look of all AWD cars, but they rule the off road, snow and rain. Still, I've always had RWD sports cars, so that's all I will ever need for any weather.
@airox2009. I believe you about fwd being easier to control in the snow. Funny thing is, I've been driving both RWD and FWD, and I still have more fun and faster cornering in my RWD cars. Now, I'm just speaking from my experience. There's more cars on non snowy and raining roads than cars in the snow, so I don't really care for fwd economy cars. Fwd is easier to drive, so it's not my cup of tea. I need a real car 24/7.
@m06gran. Correct. RWD cars take more skill to drive, where as the fwd car is made for grandma and the " average " driver. No wonder automakers make their top of the line cars RWD. it's just sooooooooo much better in every way, hands down. Plus the inferior fwd design has terrible traction and understeers like bitch. RWD for the win, yet again.
@Jarasboss Not exactly for example s4 and 335i s4 beats it in every single way I like bmw but id allways go for Audi. Plus Bmw in my country in winter is quite dangerous, because it is more like drifting not driving, so AUDI again. I disagree with your opinion but i will defend your right to say it till my death! GERMAN POWER
@Jarasboss you'll stuck in snow with rear and things have changed today, on top gear's test from 2002 ford mondeo was better than bmw 3 on their trac FOR 2 SECONDS
The only Audi I ever driven that impressede was the R8 and S5 turbo. I hate the way Audis look, but the AWD felt pretty good. BMW M3 feels pretty fucken good too. Drive them, and downgrade to a fwd car and you will notice the fun being stolen from you.
If you have 2 of the very same cars, one RWD and one fwd, with equal horsepower, weight, tuning, wheels, and 2 equally skilled drivers, you can race both cars around any track, and guess which car will perform better?? Obviously, the RWD car will handle much better around fast tight corners, and have better cornering speeds and better corner exits, along with better acceleration due to better traction. RWD is superior. FWD is inferior, hands down.
I have no problem driving in snow and rain because every car I've ever owned were RWD. Too many people don't have snow skills. Only a small percentage of people live in the snow vs people that live in non snowy areas, so of course RWD is still much better.
@murdaINCballer. Looks are just as important as performance, shit for brains. Who the fuck wants a ugly ass car that looks like a boxy 4 door family sedan with no style? On top of that, those ugly cereal box evos and Subarus are not that fast. Every Supra and Z32 TT owner I know all already beat those ugly things, so why would I like a ugly ass car I can beat?
Alot of what is said here i believe is true but have you ever driven BMW in the snow, they are useless I dont know why, they just dont like it, i think FWD cars perform marginaly better than RWD in snow, i base this from experience alone.
AWD is good, but why do Subaru look so damn ugly? When the FT-86 comes out, they should make a AWD version, so Subaru can finally have something good looking. Subaru and Mitsubishi evos look like crappy cereal box cars, so I don't care what they can do. Looks are just as important as performance.
Funny, because Lotus's fastest cars are all RWD. High end cars are never fwd. Performance Sports cars and the fastest dragsters are all rear wheel drive. So much for fwd being so great. That good in the snow bullshit don't cut it. Way more people all over the world don't live in the snow.
To paraphrase Lotus's old publicity material for the modern Elan.
If the front and rear tyres are the same dimensions, and the engine is in the front of the vehicle, a FWD car will be faster over any distance, over any road surface, in any driving conditions. As most "normal" roadcars have same dimension tyres, this tells us what? :)
Fwd cars were designed to make driving a bit easier than driving a RWD car. Yeah, it's easier to drive in the rain and snow. But real skilled drivers can handle a RWD car in the rain and snow. I prefer to drive RWD cars in the rain, to always maintain skills. Pussy drivers like to take the easy route and use inferior fwd. No thanks. Why be a pussy?
FWD is far superior in snow than RWD. Especially in deeper snow an RWD BMW is useless. It`s always easier to pull the rear tires through snow than pushing them. I had a 3 series in front of me recently on a snowy incline. After a few minutes I passed him since he was so slow out of every corner.
ZachMitch1994. That's a load of garbage. It's good for the average driver, but not for performance driving. When you drive a front wheel drive car fast around the corners, the rear doesn't help the entire car move as fast as it wants to. It begins to lose traction the faster you go.
Front wheel drive is still inferior to rear wheel drive, hands down. It's simple physics. That why sports cars and high end cars are RWD. Who the fuck is going to buy a fwd high end car? If fwd is so great, then let's see a fwd BMW M6, or fwd Supra, or fwd Ferrari. Let's see a fwd to perfect dounuts. Fucken morons
Then compare a Renault Megane RS and a BMW 135i. The Renault absolutely destroys the BMW on the track eventhough both cars are about equally fast on the straights.
@Airox2009 What will happen to Megane with 340 HP? You would be hearing metal bending and twisting, and stuff braking, that's what will happen :) Putting anything above 250 HP on front wheels and letting them drive, steer, brake, and handle much more mass than rear wheels, pretty much interferes with laws of physics. This is not my opinion, it's a well known fact. Read about FWD limitations.
As an automotive engineer I know about the limitations of FWD. But I am still impressed how far FWD can go. A recent test of a heavily modified FWD Ford Focus RS with close to 380 hp on the Hockenheim track in Germany resulted in a time of just over 1 min 10 sec. That is Lamborghini Gallardo territory.
@Airox2009 Than no need for additional reading for you :) I agree that FWD can go far, but I also think everyone should agree that "heavily modified" should never be close to "representative sample".
I prefer RWD over FWD but if I were in country with lots of bad weather, I would choose FWD over RWD
Of course, if AWD is in the game, it is always the winner, no contest.
@enthusy so youre saying that fwd cars that are dino'd and end up with over 250 hp are towed there on a trailer and towed back and they are dino'd for shits and giggles?
FWD cars will always be better than RWDs in snow. BMWs need traction and stability control to move through snow, FWDs dont.
Their theory at 3:11 makes no sense as FWD cars would have more traction because all of the engine's weight is situated right over the front wheels, causing them to spin less.
I cant believe the dumbness of this commercial. BMW engineers should use their common sense.
@rforracing They're all the same. If the road is slippery it will always fishtail. The only advantage FWD has is that the weight of the engine will apply pressure to the drivetrain wheels so they don't lose traction. Stability is the same, sometimes worse with FWD if you get torque steer.
3:11 is dramatized. If you slam the gas pedal in a FWD, the front does go up and the tires squeal. RWD doesn't have that hesitation when accelerating in that condition.
@ghettofama703 RWD cars have their engines situated at the front 2 lol. Therefore, the rear wheels would get less traction as the majority of the weight is still at the front of the car.
@rforracing I mentioned that as the only advantage to FWD when I said the weight of the engine applied pressure to the drivetrain wheels since the drivetrain wheels are located under the engine so to say.
FWD is much easier on snow. You can often use more momentum by just bashing through the snow. With RWD you always have to be careful that your tail stays in place without traction control. It gets even worse for RWD when driving up a narrow street, good luck then!
@Airox2009 But still, that doesn't change the fact that the car will move around. I had and have been in countless FWD cars where the car jerks. The only real drivetrain that will do excellent in snow is 4WD/AWD. Even then, some cars still have disadvantages.
@rforracing no bro its not a theory lol. its called weight transfer i believe. btw there is a reason why sports cars are rwd. and there is a reason why they are engineers. and it is painfully apparent to everyone here why YOU AREN'T an engineer
I disagree, the best is SH-AWD, Recent review by Road and Track, you can see it in their website, Audi a4, Acura Tl, BMW 3 , Infiniti G37, Fastest was Audi A4, followed by Acura TL, Also in the SCCA racing Front wheel drive is Always the winner Acura TSX and RSX and Mazda all beat BMW

@allensi729 I do not believe that! With a proper winter tires driving in winter is not a problem! Do you use winter tires at all in USA? Because if you do not have them you can leave the car in garage.
@allensi729 FWD is more practical in the winter especially when you are driving uphill! But despite that I enjoy driving my BMW in every season! RWD in winter is fun at its best!
On another note, given that BMW have just announced they're going front wheel drive for the 1 series, I wonder how the marketing department will respond :-D Will they remove this video?!...
This proves my point a million times over! RWD cars are for sports cars. Fwd cars are economy cars, not sports cars. But still we have pussy ricers that drive civics and inFAGras thinking they are cool. A million dollars will never make a civic a sports car
American car manufacturers need to take notes. Cadillac did, and they completely shifted their brand from sloppy but comfy cars to exciting, fast and very nimble comfy cars by switching back to RWD. CTS-V blows a 5 series off the track too. I have an Altima and can't stress how boring and average handling FWD is, and that car pushes and understeers way too much and isn't very good in the snow either. My next car will be RWD.
@Ricky10123 i think the real reason why FWD are produced is the safety. when u accelerate in the corner with RWD u get oversteer, when u hit throttle in FWD you understeer. what do you think witch one is more dangerous: side impact or head-on collision?
Problem with FWD is that you will have a front collision as you say.. without being able to counter steer. With e RWD you are able to steer against the slide and maybe not have a collision at all. With ASR/ESP there's no problem with RWD induced slides either.
i hate fwd they're no fun like rwd, i got a 93 lincoln continental and just isn't the same as a grand marquis or a crown vic fuck whoever made fwd

I hate the look of all AWD cars, but they rule the off road, snow and rain. Still, I've always had RWD sports cars, so that's all I will ever need for any weather.
juno4000 1 year ago

FWD is inferior, hands down.
juno4000 1 year ago
RWD Is better Because t Is More durable and More Easier To Maintain Than FWD Or AWD Even I Own An AWD SUV.
Bunyau87 1 year ago
I have no problem driving in snow and rain because every car I've ever owned were RWD. Too many people don't have snow skills. Only a small percentage of people live in the snow vs people that live in non snowy areas, so of course RWD is still much better.

@murdaINCballer. Looks are just as important as performance, shit for brains. Who the fuck wants a ugly ass car that looks like a boxy 4 door family sedan with no style? Funny, because Lotus's fastest cars are all RWD. High end cars are never fwd. Performance Sports cars and the fastest dragsters are all rear wheel drive. So much for fwd being so great. That good in the snow bullshit don't cut it. Way more people all over the world don't live in the snow.
juno4000 1 year ago
hey bmw understands that the rear wheels were meant to be used for more than holding the ass end of a car of the ground!
MrsHugzies 1 year ago

No thanks. Why be a pussy?
juno4000 1 year ago
@juno4000
Airox2009 1 year ago
ZachMitch1994. That's a load of garbage. It's good for the average driver, but not for performance driving. When you drive a front wheel drive car fast around the corners, the rear doesn't help the entire car move as fast as it wants to. It begins to lose traction the faster you go.
juno4000 1 year ago
Pussies can't handle power from the rear wheels. rforracing doesn't seem to understand simple physics. This isn't rocket science. Go some balls
juno4000 1 year ago
Front wheel drive is still inferior to rear wheel drive, hands down. It's simple physics. That why sports cars and high end cars are RWD. Who the fuck is going to buy a fwd high end car? If fwd is so great, then let's see a fwd BMW M6, or fwd Supra, or fwd Ferrari. Let's see a fwd to perfect dounuts. Fucken morons
juno4000 1 year ago
@juno4000
Then compare a Renault Megane RS and a BMW 135i. The Renault absolutely destroys the BMW on the track eventhough both cars are about equally fast on the straights.

Give the Megane 340 hp like the 1 series M an see what will happen.
Airox2009 1 year ago
@Airox2009 What will happen to Megane with 340 HP? You would be hearing metal bending and twisting, and stuff braking, that's what will happen :) Putting anything above 250 HP on front wheels and letting them drive, steer, brake, and handle much more mass than rear wheels, pretty much interferes with laws of physics. This is not my opinion, it's a well known fact. Read about FWD limitations.
enthusy 1 year ago
@enthusy
Airox2009 1 year ago
@Airox2009 Than no need for additional reading for you :) I agree that FWD can go far, but I also think everyone should agree that "heavily modified" should never be close to "representative sample".
I prefer RWD over FWD but if I were in country with lots of bad weather, I would choose FWD over RWD
Of course, if AWD is in the game, it is always the winner, no contest.
enthusy 1 year ago
@enthusy so youre saying that fwd cars that are dino'd and end up with over 250 hp are towed there on a trailer and towed back and they are dino'd for shits and giggles?

FWD cars will always be better than RWDs in snow. BMWs need traction and stability control to move through snow, FWDs dont.
Their theory at 3:11 makes no sense as FWD cars would have more traction because all of the engine's weight is situated right over the front wheels, causing them to spin less.
I cant believe the dumbness of this commercial. BMW engineers should use their common sense.
rforracing 1 year ago
@rforracing They're all the same. If the road is slippery it will always fishtail. The only advantage FWD has is that the weight of the engine will apply pressure to the drivetrain wheels so they don't lose traction. Stability is the same, sometimes worse with FWD if you get torque steer.
3:11 is dramatized. If you slam the gas pedal in a FWD, the front does go up and the tires squeal. RWD doesn't have that hesitation when accelerating in that condition.
ghettofama703 1 year ago
@ghettofama703 RWD cars have their engines situated at the front 2 lol. Therefore, the rear wheels would get less traction as the majority of the weight is still at the front of the car.
rforracing 1 year ago
@rforracing I mentioned that as the only advantage to FWD when I said the weight of the engine applied pressure to the drivetrain wheels since the drivetrain wheels are located under the engine so to say.
ghettofama703 1 year ago
@ghettofama703
FWD is much easier on snow. You can often use more momentum by just bashing through the snow. With RWD you always have to be careful that your tail stays in place without traction control. It gets even worse for RWD when driving up a narrow street, good luck then!
Airox2009 1 year ago
@Airox2009 But still, that doesn't change the fact that the car will move around. I had and have been in countless FWD cars where the car jerks. The only real drivetrain that will do excellent in snow is 4WD/AWD. Even then, some cars still have disadvantages.

FWD gives head-on. RWD doesn't. I like both.
zac0964 1 year ago
American car manufacturers need to take notes. Cadillac did, and they completely shifted their brand from sloppy but comfy cars to exciting, fast and very nimble comfy cars by switching back to RWD. CTS-V blows a 5 series off the track too. I have an Altima and can't stress how boring and average handling FWD is, and that car pushes and understeers way too much and isn't very good in the snow either. My next car will be RWD.

The reason FWD are produced is because it's cheaper and you can have much more room in the Cabin, rather than with a RWD or AWD!
Ricky10123 2 years ago 8
@Ricky10123 i think the real reason why FWD are produced is the safety. when u accelerate in the corner with RWD u get oversteer, when u hit throttle in FWD you understeer. what do you think witch one is more dangerous: side impact or head-on collision?
atsaatsa 1 year ago
@atsaatsa No, it is because they are cheaper to produce, and use less space.
DiarmaidGNR 1 year ago
@atsaatsa
Problem with FWD is that you will have a front collision as you say.. without being able to counter steer. With e RWD you are able to steer against the slide and maybe not have a collision at all. With ASR/ESP there's no problem with RWD induced slides either.
