I first heard this song and saw the video on some sort of infomercial at 3 o'clock in the morning. I don't ever recall hearing the song on the radio. The song is fabulous. I am also a sucker for altos.
I first heard Mary Fahl's voice on the song "Going Home" from the movie Gods and Generals so I found more of her history with the east coast AOR band October Project. I then heard her solo work on "Somewhere In Time" and "Mary Fahl from the Dark Side of the Moon" the latter that showcased her very versatile and eclectic side and her ethereal, haunting voice!
I can't believe that i discovered this voice only after hearing this song in the movie 'Blown Away'. I was so haunted by the voice that i desperately made a google search to find more about it...I am still digging their music which indeed is out of ordinary.
I just saw Mary Fahl sing in a place called The Narrows along the river in Fall River MA. Her voice still sounds the same! She still hits the high notes and sings with great passion. The sun was setting over the river as she sang and it was a beautiful experience. My wife and spoke with her after the show and she was very thankful that we had driven 4 hrs to see her. It had been almost 10 yrs since we had heard her perform but it was if time had stood still. Go see her,and you won't forget it!
that's what prompted me to look it up today... that movie was on TV. It's funny cause no matter what I'm watching, sad sounding songs always stick out and I have to go look them up.
I adore Mary Fahl and OP. I first heard her when she did the theme to Gods & Generals, "Going Home". Now I love almost everything she and OP have done. What a great voice. Her voice kind of reminds me of another great, but underrated artist, Julia Fordham.
Grace Slick? You couldn't have insulted her worse. Mary live is so majestic it's almost as though you're witnessing a ghost. I saw them open for the Crash Test Dummies once with my kids and they were freaking out as much as i was. Her recorded voice just can't even begin to translate what this woman really sounds like. It's the difference between a recorded gun shot and a real one.
She is unbelievable live. I agree, she should've stayed in that band, they themselves were amazing writers.
I wish I knew how to put stuff up on here, I have a live club show that they were offering for sale to fan club member, its a video, they are even better live.
When the original O.P. disbanded, and Mary Fahl departed, I totally lost interest in this band. I feel guilty about that because Mary's replacement, Marina Belica, is a truly talented vocalist, and I like her too. Another person reminded me that O.P. was created on the haunting, almost surreal vocals of Mary Fahl, and that replacing Mary was like trying to replace an instrument that so thoroughly defines a band's sound. How true. Mary Fahl is the heart and soul of October Project...
Just a brief clarification here. When I said Mary Fahl was the heart and soul of O.P., in no way did I mean to belittle the other members of O.P. Everyone on this band was very talented and contributed greatly. Had anyone other than Mary left, it would have been detrimental indeed. But I feel that May's departure was fatal. Without Mary, O.P. was a different animal with different stripes, so to speak. The magic was gone because Mary was gone. :)
I thought your first comment was pretty accurate. when you change the band members, the band's sound isnt usually THAT affected, but when you change the VOICE of the band, in this case, Mary, MUCH more changes. I have heard the "new" OP and honestly, I love Marina's voice, but it doesnt sound like the OP that I grew to love.
Mary's solo work shows that the whole of the band was greater than the sum of its parts; same thing with November Project (listenable and good) and October Project with just Julie, Emil and Marina. Unfortunately, egos got in the way, Mary wanted to write more of the music, and left the band the day after Sony failed to renew them.
It's sad that Mary left the group , but lets face it , she is in a different class from the rest of the group . She needs a manager who can get her the recognition that her voice deserves .
I wouldn't say she is in a different class. They sounded this good because of the writing combined with Mary's unique voice. Emil wrote most, if not all, of the songs in fact - including those haunting melodies that she sings. She said it herself once onstage( I was fortunate enough to catch them live a few times). Julie Flanders wrote most of the lyrics. All the pieces worked in this recipe and this was very much a BAND.
Leaving the band was the worst mistake Mary could have made. They needed each other, and could have carved out a significant niche for themselves. I suppose there was friction, but she didn't have the writing chops to go solo. The last I heard from Mary was her interpretation of Dark Side of the Moon. *sigh*
It's not just her voice- the new age production I think is a detriment to people listening it to it now. This is good songwriting- the video imagery is detrimental to the soul of the song- and of their other songs. As far as I'm concerned, this is ahead of its time and fostered by the wrong production element
I read that October Project disbanded because they didn't get the support from Sony that they needed. I am excited to hear that Mary Fahl has new material coming out. I just love her voice. October Project isn't the same without her. They are all very talented individuals and Julie Flanders writes some amazing lyrics.
OK then. Where Are They Now? Well doing much of the same w/o Mary Fahl.. Mary Fahl has a new release coming out in 2007 covering all the songs off of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. The promo can be had now from eBay. Mary Mary ~
