At about 17 minutes you talk about how people in the still world won't understand the "we shoot everything manual". The only thing an experienced photographer will keep on auto is perhaps the focus but even that is only auto when the subject is too quick to focus on by hand. Definitely in both fields you get to a level where you realize the camera just doesn't do anything well for you by itself.
Just a quick question. I have made films before with my friends (no I am not a professional) with a JVC Everio Camcorder, but I have heard of DSLR cameras, now I do have a budget (under £300) so what is the best for filmmaking?
@CLASSICMONSTERGUY95 Check out how much you can get a Canon t2i (or Canon 55D if your in Europe) for and try and buy one, even if you have to save up a bit more, it most definitely worth it! If you cannot afford that much, then take a look into Panasonic's Lumix G range... i'm pretty sure you can get a Lumix G2 for under £300 nowadays, which i have used for numerous films, and now use as a "Behind the Scenes" camera. Hope this helps!
I currently have a 60d with a 50 mm 1.8, im really looking for a good second lens for videography for when i take on serious projects outside of playing around in the house with it. any suggestions.
I do my focusing different. Switch off the autofocus button on your objectiv and press the plusbutton at the top right corner of the 5D. This magnifies my image with one press 5x and with a second press 10x. So you really can see extremelly well whether an object is clear or not.
Why doesn`t Canon not do a real Film camera with the sensor and cinematic quality of the 5D?? With a focus button a bigger folding monitor etc. I am shure that would be the hit of the next 3-4 years and a huge seller.
Ahhh, it sucks though. I like the big, bulky cameras... they make you look professional. Hard to be taken seriously when you try to film holding a photography camera to film. O_o
@StolenLettuce lol, hey who cares how professional one looks like. As long as the final product is good it doesn't matter if you look like a film maker or not.
@coolero80 Yeah, I'm sad to say it took me two weeks to make a decision. However, at least it was the right decision. I'll be buying it next week. ;/ Haha.
@StolenLettuce I must disrespectfully disagree, you won't get anywhere thinking like that as you clearly just like the idea of being a filmmaker. Nobody cares how you look while filming if the finished product looks good. Which It is sure to do on a dSLR as they have better HD video quality than any 'film cameras' in the same budget.
Could you do a review on the new editing software called Kdenlive. It is the only software right now that does auto proxy files to make HD video work smooth on any machine made in the last 5 years. It works flawless as of there last release and it's free!!
I'm torn between the 5D vs 7D. I know 5D is a better camera but I loathe the 30fps "video" look & even with the 24p firmware update the 5D still looks like bright beautiful video, whereas the 7D looks more like film. I'm told that the smaller sensor on the 7D actually approximates 35mm filmmaking more closely than the 5D as only half the frame is used in 35mm filmmaking so the half sensor actually gets you closer to the filmic look. Any tips on how to get the 5D to to look more like film?
Ok, so for $2500 you can of course get the canon 5D, but for only $1500 you can get the 7D and I was wondering if you think the 5D is that much better for video just because it's full frame and a larger censor? The thing is the 7D is more geared towards video don't you think?
@projectbluefilter The thing you need to keep in mind is that the 5d has some better features such as better low light video and there is a bigger sensor. Also the overall image quality is much better and easier to color correct and grade.
I want a video SLR set up, so far i gathered the canon 60d 18-200 lens, 3 point continues soft box light set up seems the right way to go, can you advise me on any of this gear,
im shooting a music artist with a green screen background, gonna shoot outdoors as well later but its mainly for music videos.
But Philip, now they Sony and Pana have come out with sub 6K price camcorders, it makes no sense for Canon to improve the DSLRs. Canon will now produce a cheap camcorder to compete against ag af 101 & FS 100
how would you attach a boom mic to a dslr and what do you think about the "Sony Cyber shot Dsc Hx100v" would that be as good as using a dslr?? I just want your opinion...
I dont think we'll be seeing video from true "Cinematographers" like Matthew Libatique or Wally Pfister singing the praises of film over video. Why is it that the small-time guys with the inferiority complexes about their place in the big scheme of things are always knocking down the other options (options which have, of course, eluded them). Film is film. Video is video. Give praise where it is due. There are cinematographers, and there are "videographers". Know the difference.
"Whereas film reached a plateau, many years ago, and hasent really moved on from that.",
and in the next sentence he's talking about tests done to see if video footage can measure up to film. Classic.
When the visual quality of film is so vastly superior to video, why would discussing how film "hasent moved on" even an issue? Go see how many major releases were still shot on film in 2010/2011. Hey, here's a fun tagline:
DSLR's....when you lack the skills, talent, and budgets for film.
One more thing canon and nikon have to improve on Video mode is to PUT THE DAMN AUDIO METERS VISIBLE on screen while shooting, not on menu only. Abother thing: HEADPHONE JACK! And finally, more recording options for video recording besides H264 which sucks balls.
i love his comments, and persona. he sounds like a cool guy. and i think he gave a very HONEST comparison, unbiased. i am still wondering, though, why this video done on 5d doesn't look very HD to me. it doesn't look crisp and sharp
@ltum2 that's what i thought too! i think the guy who did the interview failed at focusing in the beginning and didn't see it on the small screen, who cares!

Great vid- thanks for doing this interview. I'm a fan of Philip Bloom's work. The next revolutionary DSLR is the Panasonic GH2- the sensor isn't as big, but aliasing and moire aren't as much of an issue. Amazing image. Sharper than any other DSLR.

@PRiiZMx Hi, I have the 7D and love it. You can check Phillips videos "Dublin's people" and Venice People. Shot on 7D. Also remember if you want to shoot Slow Motion only the 7D can do it. Then... there's the price. I have a 7D, a 50 mm prime lens, a 18-135 mm lens and a shoulder rig all for less than cost of the 5D body only. Some people are crazy about the sensor size, but I actually like the 7D better than the bigger sensor of the 5D. 7d sensor it's same size as the RED. My vote goes for 7D.
@PaulinaColombia All Canon video-enabled DSLRs can shoot in slow motion. APS-C is slightly smaller then the Super-35 sensor used in the Red one. The 7D doesn't even come close to the Red one in terms of quality; the moiré and aliasing are terrible.
@flashgunfilms The big advantage I see is the 5D has full gate + very good quality, however its such a powerful chip they strugle even with new updates to make it run the same slow motion optoins as both the 7d /550 d.....
I know one guy who says to use bad glass or put plastic between the glass and the sensor. He runs the Eyepatchentertainment channel here. Find it kind of silly.
is there anywhere, where we can see his work? :) he seems good:D

Most of the post-production folks I consulted said that DSLR films are great when frame is fixed but uneasy and uncomfortable on panning.
Plus DSLRs need lot of peripherals to serve a pro level in filmmaking.
Probably some people find their "point" in doing something that normal industry gurus don't do... a way to stand out.

Fantastic interview.
