  • Best intro ever!

  • Good review, I see where your coming from on some levels. I myself love Arthouse film. I consider it a Genre. I do not understand why people are giving you bad comments for this vid. B is good to great! I did my review of it a few days ago, a gave it a 10/10 but everyone has there own interpretation of a film and we need to repect peoples opinions. Without different oppinions we wouldnt have debates, conversations would not flow. Anyways enough of my rambling Great review Chris! :)

  • @shinigami25L Thank you........ SO........ MUCH.

  • its about drama and depression? u have the insigth of a lamp, up side donw (a fun movie? craft?) please... read a book... i love this film, i'm sad that you didn't understand nothing from it...............i got to say, thanks, i'm gonna lunch my review of this same film very soon ((the same i rote in fanatico online)) ps: plot holes? OMG

  • @NatanGasparotti I have the "insigth" of a lamp? Thanks! Love you too.

  • I HATE THIS FILM FOR SCIENCE!!

  • This was the best film I've seen for years.Sometimes something just hits you right in the centre of your being when you happen to be ripe for it,and this movie did just that.

  • @ChrisStuckmann have you watched Another Earth? i really didn't enjoyed Melancholia either, but Another Earth was a beauty.

  • i love this movie because of the freat storline. cough cough, kirsten dunst's tittites

  • Comment removed

  • @Rzegarac You're entire statement is just a giant contradiction. You've watched one review of mine out of hundreds, found that I liked a movie that I should've loved (in your opinion), and feel that because of your opinion, I don't understand the art of film. You haven't even watched any of my countless short films I've written and directed, or any more of my reviews. Then you call what many refer to as a great sci-fi film, boring. (cont...)

  • @ChrisStuckmann Sir, please realize that the world runs on opinions, and just because someone doesn't share yours, doesn't make them wrong. I'm just a film lover. I see nearly every movie released and review them all. And need I remind you sir, that I gave this film a B, and that is a GOOD GRADE. What would you say a B averages out to? A 7/10 perhaps? Oh look at that the average RottenTomatoes score is 7.3/10. I guess the entire body of online film critics are just in a kid phase. Please.

  • @ChrisStuckmann I can tell you're probably an older man, and the fact that you're watching a younger man's movie review, and probably because of the sexy thumbnail, and then feeling the need to inform him that based on his love of films like Jaws, Inception and The Dark Knight, he is a child, reveals how childish you actually are. Find something better to do with your life. Share your opinion with thousands of people. Maybe then YOU will learn something about human interaction and kindness.

  • @ChrisStuckmann And as you learn you'll realize that knowing your stuff about movies comes from knowing yourself. It's all opinions and everyone is affected differently than you. But nothing I say in a stupid little internet comment is truly going to matter to you, since in one poorly constructed message, you affirmed your superiority over me by saying I'm a kid. I don't usually reply to rude comments, especially on older videos. But I felt you needed to hear this, for your benefit as a person.

  • you are far from understanding the art form of film.. i can tell this by your remark about the 'weak story' and the posters on your wall. Its alright though, once you set your mind on something you enjoy creating or criticizing, every day you should become stronger and more educated on the topic. you'll get out of this hole (kid phase) sometime in the near future and realize inception was one of the most boring movies you've ever seen.. but had a lot of potential with its cast.

  • JUST GO AHEAD AND SAY IT DUDE ! IT SUCKED !

  • I need an explanation about this movie, I am not trolling, but confused. Why everybody in this movie was a douchebag? let me explain:

Brother in law complaining about the money: Douchebag

    Mother ruining the wedding: Douchebag

Father with some sort of mental desease that doesn't care about the daugther: Douchebag

Boss looking for a slogan: Big Douchebag

bride having sex with other guy in her wedding: Biggest douchebag ever

If somebody understood this movie please help me.

  • @ggdelgado The characters just so happened to be douchey.

What kind of explanation do you want?

  • @ggdelgado they just happened to all be dicks. For me it just made the film much more believable, since the majority of people on this planet are dicks.

  • @ClearlyBlazed What I do not understand is this, if the character was written as a dick, you do not feel the pain of being depressed. The only thing you are thinking is " please bitch stop complaining". If the movie was designed to hate the characters, I believe is one of the greatest movies ever.

  • I completely agree with you this was NOT a good movie it left me very depressed for 2 days after I saw it..Id never see it again honestly

  • @menchi1552 If the movie left such a big impact on you, must be a mark of a good movie.

  • @menchi1552 It changed the way you felt for two whole days, and you think it ISNT a good film?!

  • the interesting part of this movie is her BEWBS!!

  • Great movie, masterpiece when it comes to cinematography! But then again, a lot of movies are!

    :)

  • Great movie!

  • Wonderful movie. I am different for having experienced it. In that regard, I consider it a masterpiece.

  • It's a materpiece I saw this movie twice, It's the movie of the year for me (sorry it's not Drive which is a very good movie but not so great). All the reviewers say this is pretentious, difficult to watch bla bla bla. It's not an art movie as you said it is just different of your usual standards. Cinema lovers must support these type of initiative with ambitious and intense narration. Sorry I 'm going a little too far

  • @kwanlifu Totally agree - it stayed with me for days.A wonderful piece of work.

  • This is why some of the art lovers of film annoy me. I have gotten so much hate on this review because I simply 'liked' the film and gave it a B. Are you not aware that that is a GOOD grade? Just because I didn't love the film as much as you doesn't mean I'm not entitled to my opinion. Grow up people, realize that everyone looks at a film differently and move on if you don't like my review. The more you bash, the worse you make yourself look.

  • @ChrisStuckmann You tell 'em Chris :)

  • If you have ever really been depressed, you will relate to this movie.

  • Have to agree on some points Von Trier is weird although in some parts of some of his movies I'm just awe struck at how he can turn your guts inside out. Another thing..Who doesn't know what melancholia means?. What do they teach in schools these days? Doesn't anybody read anymore?

  • why do people need to have everything explained to them? this isn't a CSI, it's work of art. premonision? see into the future? my god, do we really have to define everything? is there no such thing as artistic license? Her comment about the star is a parallel between her own sense of impending doom that existed before the planet is even spoken of ...kind of the poetic premise of the entire movie... not some SCI-FI nerdy ESP plot point. the story is strong and whole; you like it or you don't.

  • Great review. Pretty evenhanded evaluation. I particularly liked your point that artistic feel can mask the fact that the story line is underdeveloped. Keep 'em comin'.

  • @johnfraiser I more or less agree about the evenhanded evaluation.... but I'd say that a film that is artistic in nature is more geared towards evoking certain feelings from from the veiwer than it is with cramming storyline information in on top of poetic imagery and symbolism. At the start of the film I found myself asking all these "factual" questions about the characters and the background and I realized there was a story so much larger being told both philosophically and literally.

  • 98% of what comes out of Hollywood is pure junk. Time and again most movies rely on overused plot formulas that are predictable and deals with human experiences in extremely superficial ways. the writers often display such contempt for the audience's intelligence, while producers only want a product to tie into cheap commercial marketing. Then along comes a film like Melancholia and because it actually requires you to think after decades of mindless cinema you think its hard to watch, go figure

  • Chris, your review is sublime. Loved it.

  • i love this film, and i love the way you talk about it besides you didn't enjoy it, always with respect and being objective. Nice

  • The whole movie is full of symbols. What I figured out to make that movie so brilliant is, since I am German, same as von Trier, it is very close to a German novel from Romanticism ("Sandmann"). Over the movie, I was not sure anymore whether I was actually looking at the truth or how she sees reality. That is why she was able to tell the future and why the whole movie gets weirder and weirder, like the things with eletricity coming from her hands or the 19th hole.

  • The thumbnail still makes me LOL.

  • @ChrisStuckmann This movie kind of reminded me of "Another Earth". Have you seen that one?

  • let's be honnest , this movie is boring ; like if people was expecting to have a huge enterteinmant in a fg musuem right ; it's not about what u see it's about how u feel , and how u are going to explain ur feeling ! like a melancholic person is always talking his bad mood . So when smby , enter in a museum he will feel thoses things that the artist tryed to express troughh is art .that the same things happening with this movie.but it's useless to show that to a bkbuster addict he wont get it^^

  • I absolutely loved this film - Gave it five bagels out of 5 - My other half of course only gave it 2...Apparently I'm the one with good taste. LOL Loved your review...Funny..

  • I'm pretty sure the whole "I know what's going to happen" aspect is a reference to how depressed people commonly expect the worst to happen. Which makes sense, as I'm pretty sure von Trier claimed that the inspiration from this movie came from his therapist telling him something like 'depressed people deal with heavy stress better b/c they already expect the worst to happen'.

That's not to say that she couldn't (or could) see the future, just contemplating the inclusion of it in the movie.

  • I really agree with your stand on art films and I like how you point out that the "artsiness" sometimes covers up a shallow plot. Being in a film school, they teach us that all the artsy films by people like Von Trier are masterpieces. It's good to hear a different opinion. Despite me not being the biggest fan of art films, I'm still probably going to end up seeing this. Awesome review, sir. Keep up the good work!

  • you look like the rapper cage. so random, but I couldnt get over it. =p

  • I appreciate your reviews and this one is a case in point. I know exactly what you mean. Like the work off Ingmar Bergman, Von Trier utilizes film as more a means of personal expression than as "entertainment," in the Hollywood sense. As a result, the question of "enjoyment" also has to be re-examined. If one takes it to mean intellectually challenged, caused to experience a dominant mood and forced to reconsider basic values, than Von Trier is "enjoyable."

  • This film, for me, what was I wanted Tree of Life to be. This movie was focused on what it wanted to say and used its characterization to bring forward the emotion of the story. Kirsten Dunst was fantastic in it, as were all the other actors, and while it's a little slow (not boring, but slow pacing) it's still a very well made film that I was able to connect with. 9/10.

  • @ChrisStuckmann I think the term "arthouse" is overused though.

But your review was really good. I don't agree with all you're saying but that's not the point of a review anyway. In the second half she (dunst) played her role just incredibly good. Not even being able to walk anymore, with the planet coming closer and closer she was losing all that energy. In the end however she had the strength.

I thought a lot about one thing you said. That it is not enjoyable for you to watch that kind

  • @antipersonDE @ChrisStuckmann of movie. And I had to think about that for quite some while. You're right. This is a very dark form of entertainment. Was I entertained? I was fascinated. What was that? I can't describe it. I loved this movie.

  • It's the very nature of art films to make you leave inhibitions, like it or dislike it because of this or that. Things aren't explored fully because they don't need to be, because it's art.

  • By the way: dance of death comes from Ingmar Bergman : the 7th Seal.

  • Nice to see that this movie is generating some thinking too. But Chris, Bad review!

  • Sorry for the repeat. Hollywood style!

  • Unlike Hollywood movies , this flm does not chew things out for you.

Script about DEATH ( you know as in "dance of death" )

Things are even showed twice to help you, Chris!

Dunrst is someone facing mortality ( or in this case a very large metaphore coming right at ya!), while for the rest of us we're busying ourselves thinking about our next milkshake. Some people feel and see things others don;t. ! Like many artists and thinkers. it is called thinking ahead . Get it ?

    otherwise call me!

  • I watched the film last night - On Demand. I had to stay with it and in the end I'm glad I did. It was very unsettling, however, and I very much agree with Chris's review: it was mesmerizing to watch but the screen play was weak. I realize after seeing Chris's review that I need to see this movie on the big screen to get its full value.

  • how is the fact that she can predict the future not explained?

that's the whole basis of the movie. the opening scene is her vision, all of the events that happened throughout the movie.

she then cheats on her husband and gives up on her marriage instantly, because she knows the world will end anyway. this is also why she quits her job so spontaneously.

I just don't think you get the movie.

  • yesterday i see the movie and let me say is SU.CK!!! ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES I SAW......

  • @bruana10 Chatalbash is like 16-18 years old. How many people do you know that watched Fellini movies at that age?

  • I saw this movie twice and I love it. I really don't like lars von trier movies but I really loved that maybe it's because I 'm french but I think It's a great movie.

  • ~Very well done review Chris~~~I like Kirsten Dunst too so I'lll check it out~

  • you seem depressed

  • Oh and your opening was hilarious.

  • We, like, totally agree on this one - and it's a tough one! ;D Superlative review.

  • Lars Von Trier is really an overrated terrible director in my opinion.

I''ve tried to watched two of his feature films: 'Idioterne' and that semi-autobiographical film he did, and I turned off both of them.

The only watchable thing that I've seen by him is the TV-series 'Riget', that's pretty good and entertaining.

But as a director, I am not a fan of him, not at all.

  • I have that same shirt but it's black.

  • Does it turn into a disaster movie at the end? I don't know anything about it except what's in this review but it seems like it would be left open-ended.

  • It defiantly leaves you thinking.

  • @ChrisStuckmann I agree there are certain films that won't play at my local mainstream cineplex.

  • I have never seen a Lars Von Trier film, but I have heard how F**KED up they can be, particularly Antichrist. If you want to, would you mind uploading some more reviews of his work?

  • This is ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Which Movie Do You Think is Better, "The Tree of Life" or "Melancholia"?

  • That thumbnail will get a lot of people to watch this review...just saying...

  • sing along rasta stylee> arty farty movies makea me wanna go sleep! - arty farty movies so depressing and deep! - arty farty movies makea me wanna go sleep! - wham bam, shakey cam, budget so cheap!

  • Your next short film should be made Von Trier style.

  • That thing he said about critics giving artsy movies good reviews because they feel an obligation to do it, I actually do think that's hoe some of them work. Good review, though.

  • Comment removed

  • i don't know why this is rated R. thats america for ya

  • I don't think I'll see it.

  • Great review mate, I just saw the movie and thought it was visually stunning yet felt there was a lot missing from it, possibly lost in the editing process.

  • Great review mate, I just saw the movie and thought it was visually stunning yet felt there was a lot missing from it, possibly lost in the editing process.

  • Best intro......yet :)

  • @ChrisStuckmann

Ah Chris you're the best!!! I can't believe I missed that!! =D thanks for not just watching mainstream BS, major kudos and respect for reviewing films like these =)

  • it seems like one of those random ass make no sense movies were they just make it werld as hell then call it art. Even when movies like this have a meaning behind them or not...the fact its called art somehow envokes critics ta prase the crap outta it even if they dont understand it. You have your reasons for given it a B....most other critics dont so i can respect your opinion on this

  • Hey, Chris, I really love how honest you are about your opinions, if that makes sense. You always do a great job letting us know how you feel about something. I'm kind of interested in seeing this but I'd probably feel the same way about it as you. It has a creepy sort of look about it, lol.

  • Sounds like The Road. Beautiful movie, but not at all fun to watch.

  • So true that intro. Just get a slow moving zoom and your done.

  • Where did you watch it ???? PLEASE tell me Chris :O. I really can't wait to see it. I love Lars Von. I guess if anyone liked Antichrist and his other films they will like this one. Thanks for being fair btw.

  • that was an arthouse intro

  • Did they explain how owen wilson can go back in time in midnight in paris

  • @kronolisk No. But not only was that a comedy/fantasy film, his time travel was what the entire film centered around, and it didn't feel necessary to explain. In this film, in one scene Dunst mentions this ability, and I would've appreciated them talking about it more. It was mentioned and then dismissed and never expounded upon. What I'm saying is that was a juicy story element that would've been interesting to learn more about.

  • @ChrisStuckmann when you say this was a movie u didn't enjoy watching (I agree the script wasnt 100%), isnt that maybe what von trier was trying to do? Like u said, its supposed to depict Justine going through this depression and how she and those around her deal with the end of the world, is that something were supposed to enjoy watching? What I love about these kind of films is that they really do make you uncomfortable, and i think dealing with that is part of the experience. good review tho

  • @ChrisStuckmann I believe that was really done on pourpose. This is a movie about (spiritual) depression. However the "spiritually depressed" subject, is not as such because she does not see reality, but because she is able to see reality even deeper and becomes a sort of "gifted" person whose truth should be listened and not avoided. There's no need to explain the "paranormal" element, as it is just yet another symbol in the movie.

  • @ChrisStuckmann about juicy elements: why don't you ask yourself how can Kirsten Dunst's tits be bigger than yours? your talk is not a critic, it isn't even a personal judgement. you simply have nothing to say about a movie which is far more complex than your sensibility. it also seems that your deepest doubts on this movie are about its collocation into a specific genre... well, listen to me: try to spend your free time differently!

  • @kronolisk you spoiled the movie for me :(

  • I favorited since I saw the intro xD.

  • Funniest intro everz!

  • Dancer In The Dark, the best movie ever made.

  • You had me at that "art house" style intro! XD

  • LOL LOL LOL that intro was fucking hysterical. You win sir, you win.

  • Want to challenge yourself with artzy stuff? Try watching STALKER, by Andreij Tarkovskij.

  • I thought this would be like the Tree of Life I'll probably see it I dont know I wasn't that big on The Tree of Life anyways great review.

  • Majora's Mask the dramatic movie

  • is this limited release film??? i havent heard about it here in miami?

  • 3:13 Good job, man. Somebody needs to hold these people to task. Probably the worst movie I've ever seen was a shithouse film called 'Last Days' by Gus Van Sant. Nothing fucking happened in that movie. Art used to have a point, now it's frequently aimless, and that's looked at with a degree of appreciation - WTF!? The film itself doesn't sound so bad compared to Last Days. I'm just saying, sometimes I think egotistical fallacies overwhelm harder work that could make a piece truly great.

  • It's like Dogme 95 never even existed

  • Question #2:

2.When you said it was similar to the experience of watching the Tree of Life, do you mean that you didn't enjoy yourself with the Tree of Life? reason I ask this is because that film, to me was pretty much the antithesis of anything by Lars von Trier. It was about hope and the beauty of life and the universe. Lars von Trier tends to focus on less than hopeful subjects and resolutions.

    (btw I haven't seen melancholia)

Anyway, still a great review. :):):)

  • Even though I disagree with some of your points, I can see where you're coming from on some, but I feel this is COMPLETELY different from "The Tree of Life." Besides the intro of the film which has similarities.

I didn't get the same feeling (or similarities) as I did with "The Tree of Life." And isn't like ordinary arthouse. But that's the beauty of personal opinions. :)

I personally loved it and had fun watching it :P and will see it again when it hits VOD! Good review and fantastic intro.

  • Good review! got a few questions tho, this might come out wrong but anyway:

1.You kept saying it wasn't a movie you enjoyed. Is enjoyment a requirement for to like a movie? Especially when you go to see something like this. I mean, if the film's objective is to question and challenge, do you still lower points for it not being enjoyable? I can think of a number of films that I loved, but didn't enjoy in that way: Irreversible, Elephant, Dogville, etc.

2nd question and apology in another post.

  • haha, begining was funny

  • Wow you really do see everything !

  • Why should that she can see the future be explained? It's not what the movie is about. She is like the animals that can feel when tsunamies come and they get restless. She's like one of those. She was down and sad when the planet was supposed to miss, but when it was on collision course she suddenly changed and embraced nature etc(when she lay naked in the field). Don't you understand? She's like an animal that sees the evil in men and therefor she is depressed they might survive.

  • @OrginalKork Look I said it's a beautiful film and I gave it a positive grade so I don't know what you're upset about.

  • @OrginalKork You are an asshole just arguing for the sake of it . Dont you have anything else to do you fucked up piece of shit.

  • @bhatnagargaurav83 Wow wtf is wrong with you? Calm down kid. You're a pathetic human being this world need less of. Please hurry up and die.

  • great review yet again chris, i definitely want a upside down lamp :) lol

  • I didn't think I could trust Lars after Antichrist but then and again he did still make Dancer in the Dark. Throw in naked Kirsten Dunst and you got yourself a deal!

  • LMAO at the intro!

  • @ShipperWar Hahahaha thanks just showing how easy it is to make art!

  • @ChrisStuckmann You seem to have "art" and "pretentious nonsense" confused.
