So beautiful and sonorous. He has many 'weird' quirks watching him play and I love it. Adds a lot of personal touch to his playing. I would love to hear the rest of this sometime. What a sound.
I would have to say - as a professional hornist - one who has played this many times - that this is probably the best modern recording of this piece. Although it is on Europa-TV - it is the best sound and clarity that I have ever heard. I've heard it played live with Tuckwell, Clevenger, and others - but nothing like this. Ruske is a wanna-be as far as I feel. I've known Erik for over 34+ years - and he is an amazing instructor and orchestral hornist, but NOT soloist.
@DylanHornVillain Yes, and yes, although when Dennis Brain made his recording of this great work with Wolfgang Sawallisch he played it on an Alexander B flat/ A Single. But the simple truth is that Alessio Allegrino could play any horn and make one cry at his musicality and humanity. He is a very modest man, so he probably wouldn't want me to say this but I feel I must: he is, in my opinion, the finest horn player of his generation. He has a great sense of humour, too.
Alessio Allegrini is truly the Heifetz of the horn. He's the worthy successor to Brain and Baumann. There is nobody else I can think of who can pull off Strauss' 2nd. In my opinion, he is the greatest living horn player, an inspirational teacher and thoroughly pleasant person. I can only thank God that the musical world has been blessed by his consummate artistry. I consider myself priviliged to have shaken his hand.
@paxmanhorn20 I'd love to hear Radek Baborak play it. He is one of my heroes, along with Javier Bonet. I know that he would be technically perfect but I wonder if he would play certain first movement passages in the papillionaceous manner Allegrini and Brain espouse. Thanks for your comment.
Complimentissimi!!!
He has a bizzarely flat finger position... absolutely wonderful playing though - brilliance of the first order. Shame about the lost ending - I would love to hear his 3rd mov!
Such a superior musician first and foremost. Control that is almost unbelievable. My favorite piece of Strauss for many reasons. Signore Allegrini truly makes it sing and makes one's heart feel the joy. It isn't possible that the rest of the slow movement and the 3rd were poor. Not with this man's ability and glorious sound. Please upload the rest!
I agree. When I was in JUNIOR high, I was transposing Eb parts just to make it interesting. We would play old marches that had F parts on one side and Eb on the other, and I would always turn them over and play the Eb side. When you get to college you'll meet trumpet players with C horns playing Bb parts, and trombone players playing tenor (maybe alto) clef; you have to hold up your end on behalf of all French horn players everywhere!
Fabulous - it doesn't get any better than that. A true horn sound that never gets thin or trombone-like and has a gorgeous ring even when playing soft. Beautiful interpretation.
Inchiniamoci!!!!
Seems to have total control of the instrument, no mean feat! Very musical performance, like singing. Must be the recording but he sounds a little muffled to me.
Having been raised on Dennis Brain recordings, I have consistently had troubles listening to other interpretations of various horn concertos without longing for the Brain version. You, sir, have played this so wonderfully and with such beautiful tone that my ears crackle with awe and wonder. Thank you very much. Now I'm dying to hear the next two movements.

OK, 1. I don't believe you 2. You should be able to transpose into E flat before being in college.
Seriously, I go to Eastman for horn performance and if I came to my teacher not being able to transpose a whole step he would castrate me.
Buy the part in E flat.

Not necessarily : it depends on horn used and its settings. It's usually easier in fast passages. But I don't know very well about Paxmans.
