I actually do like this better than Jeff Buckley's version (as great as that was). It feels more raw and honest. The emotion feels more real. Maybe cause it's live (if only he could remember the words!) I like Cohen's live version of this song better than the studio version, too, so who the hell knows.

it's true - i heard a recording of him singing this in france, and he "forgets" the words at pretty much the same points, and tells the crowd: "avec moi..." so that they all sing along together...

Well, if you compare it to the Jeff version, it does sound a bit flat (and I am a big fan Beirut and Zach... however an even bigger Jeff fan ^-^) The uke does make it a little happier song than it should be I think.... but the people singing along do add some love to it...

I think the commenter above you meant that people now connect the song more with Jeff (making it "his") after his death, because the tragic nature of his passing helped him - and his rendition - to stick out in people's minds. So while Leonard is still alive, and still performing the song, it's been snatched out from underneath him.

I mean, Leonard lost his song, in a sense, but Jeff lost his life, so as far as trade-offs go...
