  • 4:05 DAS LIMPID!!

  • I'm very thankful these have been uploaded. My only qualm might be that the audio quality was unfortunately degraded in the process.

  • I think i said before i new a chap sunk four times Antony houghes. died 1999 age 99. Rip. Top Man

  • Wait a minute ... they couldn't pick up survivors?

    Not even their own men??

Why persecute Doenitz for not picking up survivors when the British themselves couldn't bother?

    This is completely INSANE

  • Because if they stayed to pick up survivors, they would have been sitting ducks for the UBoat that had sunk the orginal ship.

It is a harsh reality of war, due to the nature of the battle

  • Indeed, this was a harsh lesson learned from the first war.

  • same thing happened to three uboats that sank a liner off the african coast they stopped to pick up survivor and help them then radioed out to everyone that they were assisting all the passengers the americans came and bombed them

  • Not quite insane. It might be crazier to stop at every imagined light and risk delaying a shipment or making a ship an easier target for a U-boat by slowing down.

  • @askjiir

Yes, it is insane. Admiral Nimitz defended Doenitz in his trial by saying that the US subs in the pacific had the same orders to not pick up survivors.

  • @Dowly Submarines usually simply didn't have room to carry survivors, so it was common practice to not pick any up.

  • That man at the beginning for sure knows how to retain his nerve when memorizing back.

Now that is BIG respect for miles and miles

  • The merchant navy never got enough credit for their bravery and sacrifice

  • I was rather surprised that no mention was given to Alan Turing and the work done at Bletchley Park in cracking the Enigma code which greatly turned the tide for the Allies against the U Boats. Many have cited this as the single most important reason in winning the war against them.

  • I wondered this at first, but it turns out the Allies work on the Enigma code was kept secret until 1974 (after this doco came out).

  • Now that old boy at the start is a fucking real man and thats for sure god bless you sir.
