@ ishouldplayzelda , not all helmets are made of plastic, most are because of the expense of a leather one. all departments i know of wear plastic, but there are a few guys at mine that like the old school leather. Its nice to have a leather helmet, cause it has alot of meaning to a fireman. the price difference is rather much between the two, but I prefer the plastic.....cause its ALOT more comfortable. it takes alot more time to break in a leather helmet!
Sorry but ever since MSA bought Cairns they're leathers just haven't been the same. Much lower quality and craftsmanship than they used to have in the 80's and 90's. I'll stick with my Phenix TL2 lid. Most comfortable helmet I've ever worn.
Ive seen first hand A Bullard UST model helmet vs a Cairns N5A in a high heat condition. the Bullards 4ich face sheilds top was a lil bubbled, the impact liner had some melting on the rear, and it was smoked out. The leather helmet? It started melting, and the paint was just about done for. So in my opinion leathers cant stand high heat like the new stuff. How do i know? I was next to the guy in the same fire, same heat. Id still buy a leather tho, Oldschool all the way
get one used from within your department. i got guys that use them for about two years and get rid of them for what ever reason. they are in good shape and still usable for a while.
it depends i have a n5a and love it. its smaller than the 6a but the 6a has more options. n5a is only osha approved the n6a is osha and nfpa approved.
What starts with F and ends in uck?
