Nice video! I travelled three times on this route, as it was still possible to travel directly from Western Europe to Istanbul without changing train or car.
I travelled by Istanbul Express train, Munchen-Istanbul, two times on a bulgarian couchette car and one time on a turkish sleeping car.

Survoje al Oriento, la trajno 347 Vieno, Budapeŝto, Beogrado, Sofio, Istambulo veturadas en Serbio, Bulgario kaj Turkio. Poste Istambulo oni povas veturi trajne al Teherano...Iam mi iros...Belajn pejzaĝojn oni miras...
Hope it was a good trip. I know that our locomotives and most wagons are old, but still I like to travel with a train in Bulgaria a lot. I find it addictive, but it is my personal opinion.
There are at least two Dimitrovgrads, one is the Serbian border station to Bulgaria, the other is a town in Bulgaria. This train passes both of them! ;-)
It's not called Orient Express, it's the Balkan Express D 491. It's pulled by ZS 441/444 electric to Nis, 661/644 (GM) diesel to Dimitrovgrad (Serbia), BDZ 4x electric to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria), 07 (Ludmilla) diesel to Kapikule (Turkey) and TCDD E 52500 electric to Istanbul Sirkeci.
the railways in balkan are very bad- the trains cannot speed upto 50 miles. if it were good- the trip could be a matter of some 20 hours or so. i mean sofia-istanbul is some 350 miles. the train needs for that the whole night. by a car troughout you´ ll make it within 6-7hours.
Well, of course it's just the title of the video, but yes, some variations of the Orient Express took this route. The steamers at Belgrade are nostalgic locos and still in use, so no scrap line, the diesel locos at Lapovo are class 641 shunters built in Hungary.
Many thanks. I really must read up on the history of the OE from concept to the end, before the glitz of the steam hauled rich persons version of today.
Very nice clip! :) From 1:43 to 2:26 is Niš (Serbia) - the best city in the World! heheheh!

Does this 'modern' Orient Express follow the original route? Interesting shots of loco scrap lines - any information on these loco's?
