  • i listened and listened to the voice of Alan, which voice so recalled anothers. Whose?

Took a bit of time; then came clear to me. Either Alan Watts sounds(nearly) exactly like

    Glenn Gould, or....visa versa.

  • He sounds a bit like David Bowie.

  • It's 40 years since Watts was talking like this, yet we still haven't got the message....Duh!

  • Wonderful observations, not least that our arrogance has grown vastly out of proportion with our understanding. As if a creature named GW Bush wants to run the universe. It's not going to end well.....

  • have we passed the point in which we have damged the Earth beyound repair? It's getting there. Will the universe interfer and save earth from the facial herpes that is mankind?

  • @truthseeker010101: the earth is fine. the humans are fucked! difference! the earth dont care about the clima change, about the greed, the wars, the unjustice. the earth is in dynamic balance and will do well for some more billion years.

  • @waken12 The humans are fucked? I enjoy life, I am not fucked.

  • It would also be bitter - like he was.

  • @TheIntruders It would definitely not be bitter... How can you propose that? I am trying to find and can only see 1 reason as to why Alan Watt's might have been 'bitter', and that is perhaps that he was upset he'd never see the world working in the way it should have been lived and inhabited in his own lifetime. Every second spent thinking about it is just another way of delaying it. just Be

  • @TheIntruders Yeah, I don't see the bitterness. Just because he isn't constantly telling everyone how amazing they are doesn't mean that he doesn't feel it.

  • @YayBenSpeck indeed. he details this in one of the audio recordings of a lecture. detachment does not equal bitterness. In-fact it is the exact opposite! lol

  • A society of people who think like Alan Watts would probably be lovely.

  • The universe is undoubtedly much more intelligent than we are. That is WHY we build everything out of rectangles and cuboids!

  • I love Alan Watts so much.

  • three brothers go off to perfect a science. one learns that if he is given a bone he can put muscle and skin on the bone. the other learns that if he is given a bone with muscle and skin he can make it into the full version of the animal. the final learns that if he is givin a lifeless animal he can give it life. so they go to the wild grab a lion bone. one puts the muscle and skin on it the other makes it whole, and finally the other gives it life. the lion comes alive and eats em all

  • " a basic initial mistake in our thinking"... were separate, were inside our bodies. we must subdue the environment to be safe, we must control the world...and from this we've built our massive blundering infrastructure and on and on we go with each iteration convinced we just have to use more force more control more power.

  • @Teszchk Now you're putting words in my mouth. I never said that I "can't" be creative without it. I just said it helps to induce creative thinking. You're really trying hard here to insult me and it's just not working. Also it's spelled Cannabis, not BUS. And you call me stupid? really? Who says "goon" anymore? You just seem like an angry old bitch who needs some dick & weed in her life.

  • Thumbs up if you think this guy needs a light saber.

  • @1iguerra xD omg i loled so hard

  • Alan Watts... what can I say? He was one of a kind... trying to get THROUGH TO US.. that we are NOT what you think you are... it is so common and in your face OBVIOUS that we simply miss to see it!

  • @Teszchk

I get high to get enlightened, to induce creative thinking, to expand the mind. Unlike you, who seems to be so close-minded, judgmental, & stereotypical. I fully support natural mind-altering substances which help to explore the mind & the universe around us. If you don't, than how about you just not say anything instead of going on the internet judging others. It's a sign of weakness on your part.

  • @Teszchk I'm pretty sure that's all I do when I get high is form thoughts. Try having a smoke and take a walk in nature. See what philosophical ideas come flowing through your mind.

It seems you have the wrong idea about cannabis my friend.

  • alan watts >> deepockets chopra

  • hes a bit like O bi Wan

  • @sgtmcwallace Except this guy truly understands the force lol

  • @sgtmcwallace This is who Obi wan was based off of.

  • The universe is smarter than we are...kekeke

  • This guy is brilliant! Thanks for this video, what a relief from all the propaganda going on in the good ole USA.

  • This reminds me of how modern computers calculate using probablity by analyzing chioces one by one, but quantum computers calculate all options at once. I beleiev that once our technology increase and quantum mechanics are better understood there will be a mass change in human conscienousness

  • yes Alan, but that was before Windows 7 was it not...? His points and opinions are correct for the most part I think, people should walk in the countryside more, and pick up signals and understanding from it - as he seems to be doing so well

  • This is excellent, in such a way we think that we each follow a certain "path" of life, a straight and forward motion from beginning to end it shows us that too is but our attempt at trying to bring logic to a world where logic does not belong. Where in actuality we don't follow our path but we walk randomly and respond to what happens along the journey. We pave our own roads, and in some cases we try to help others by letting them follow the trail.

  • 3:47 Fukushima *cough cough* GOM

  • Can't wait to see Alan watts and Carl Sagan in heaven!

  • This video is a great gift to humanity. Cheers Alan man! You were(are) one hell of a crazy diamond!

  • I believe we need a reformation. A new age of love and amazing consciousness is upon us. We must be ready!

  • Silence and ignorance in front of the great brain of the universe. If we look beyond the miles of paper maybe we could seize something else. The unknown or the future revelation of a new type of interpretation. Thanks for sharing this second part. Alan Watts is an evident guide of a new kind of inner revolution, from the outside towards the inside.

  • I become Alan Watts every time I get high, but I make much less sense.

  • @jiggajesse lol true that

  • @jiggajesse So you are not Alan Watts.

  • @jiggajesse

Ditto, except I can still express my thoughts clearly. Soo..... I really do become Alan Watts :D

  • He really is enjoying the beauty and richness of that field. But I forget, which of the Billy Goats Gruff was he?

  • "The intellect is subordinate to the eye"

    ~~cc

  • 12 people live with George bush!

  • A wonderful gift to the modern world. So sad he died before his time.

  • thanks for posting!

  • Im @ my math class right no teacher, but ive done my homework and work a little bit on it the day before, so watching this video on my math class is totally not a waste of time at all.

  • For the record, I hate all these people who try and relate to the scientific community by saying that they understand these concepts, but only through the use of drugs. To those people: fuck you. You're a troll to this community. Please go find some other cause to not fight for. Like your legalization of whatever preference of drug you have.

  • @Generaldrummist I agree and I think most are just regurgitating crap they've heard others say, but there is a very long history of many different cultures using drugs to alter their consciousness.

I'm not advocating the use of anything, nor am I demonizing it. I'm just saying that certain drugs taken under the right circumstances can have extreme effects on your consciousness and give you very deep insights into yourself and the Universe.

  • the universe and man are separate. if you die the universe still exists for me and vice verse. he teaches deception.

  • @McCoder192 who exists?

  • @McCoder192

    Does that feel right?

  • @McCoder192

"the part cannot comprehend the whole"

  • after a few videos, he's the first to make me feel like im finally understanding

  • @jrblohm to which I respond and question once again.

    His insight is powerful.

  • This man is a genius.

  • Where there are no bees there are no flowers. Where there are no flowers there are no bees. Therefore they are one organism. I think that was in the 1st part. That made me think. I have never thought like that before. Sure they are in a symbotic relationship that's accepted. However, to think of them to be ONE organism is fascinating. In the same way that the heart cannot live without the brain and vice versa.

  • i recommend playing organ donor by dj:shadow in the backround this is youtube.. i thank you for this video!!!

  • This was on TV in 1971?!? Can you imagine seeing this on NBC today? Me neither

  • @guidomith Yea but we got so many convenient distractions.. ;)

  • @guidomith This must have been aired on BBC. At 1969-1972 David Attenborough was responsible of the output of both BBC channels.

  • @Timeofflux We eat too much and reproduce faster than we die off. So far...

Pollution is maybe the big one. It will be here after we (including the Elites who feed off us) are all gone...

  • I think we are dispensable.. and we need to fully realize, and not only to makes ideas of it, as the Alan said, we need to realize that the universe came first and the only, in my opinion, difference between it and us is that we can realize that we are here, we are conscious of ourselves and because of that we separate the whole nature of us.. even when its obvious that we are the one and same thing.

  • When Allan said that we humans are as indispensable to universe as universe to us.. I think his wrong. We are certainly a part of it, and without it, there wasn't an us, but, without us, the universe could and will surely continue his existence. The thing is there weren't nobody to notice it.. but it continue to happen the whole live of nature.

  • @manuelmadrizr1 You make a good point and from a natural point of view, you are correct. But, I wouldn't try to read too deeply into the message. Watts is a philosopher, so he is speaking from a metaphysical point of view.

  • @thawkeye24 science is predicting the next most probable, and it uses a method of measurement. as we go from classical physics to quantum, all that changes is the approximation. but these equations and symbols are abstractions of reality. it is important not to confuse the map with the territory. eastern mystics understand that our language is limited and we have trouble explaining it because the experience transcends words. spirituality does not need science and vise versa but people need both

  • @iamdk007 Good insights!

  • Science may one day provide more answers than we think... we already have multitasking and parallel computing (soon quantum computing) so... not so "single track" :p

  • @alexeevic Once again, grasshopper, pay closer attention to the video. Our technologies are only improving on something that is riddled with imperfections in the first place-- our human thinking patterns.

  • @alexeevic Once again, grasshopper, pay closer attention to the video. Our technologies are only improving on something that is riddled with imperfections in the first place-- our human thinking patterns.

  • @SuperCookiemunsta Science may confirm spirituality (NDE research, consciousness experiments in neuroscience). Science is already there, we just haven't discovered it yet. We're limited by our application of science, technology. Science is perfection, our brain is not! Science is not "only improving", it may one day change everything. If you improve on an error you get another error. A wrong hypothesis can't lead to correct answers. Science is not a wrong hypothesis. Our interpretation of it is.

  • 3:18

  • Don't quantum computers change Alan's conclusion that the computers can only process things row-by-row?

I really enjoy his perspective but I see our current abstractions of math, language, and physics as stepping stones to at least try and grasp nature rather than just saying that we're too simple minded and giving up any progression which is not driven by 'nature'. To me, that's being simple minded. McKenna said it more elegantly when he talked about the over-supposition inherent in science.

  • @Supralobe

He isn't speaking in lines either. :) There are obviously exceptions and different variables to it all.

  • @Bargadiel Very true - good observation.

  • @Supralobe They have not yet built a quantum computer. Who says it is possible?

But yes, massively parallel machines have been around for quite a while NOW.

In 1971, the CDC7600 (by Cray) was still a serial machine. Alan Watts was into Zen,

not computer engineering. Finally, in 1971 nobody really knew about neural networks nor the maths one can use to simulate them. The brain is NOT in any way a serial or parallel computer in any real sense...

Neural networks are much more subtle and strange.

  • hes so beautiful

  • @Timeofflux Are you sure? Are you an ecologist?

  • he certainly is having a conversation with himself...

  • @Timeofflux I can respect this reply

  • @Timeofflux we are trying to change the functions of the world, and we are trying to change the nature.

  • Jesus how much pot did this guy smoke? He sounds like he's tripping his balls off.

  • 1:10

  • "Understanding it in terms of a language, numbers, and a logic too simple for the job."

  • I wish he knew about the Zeitgeist Movement and the Venus Project. He would completely support the movement.

  • @questionsleadtotruth I think you misunderstand Watts. Read his books, study Venus / TZM. I bet you change your mind. Watts was real. TZM is not.

  • If you have never experienced psychedelics then you don't have the awareness to know. I don't think the men who were/are teh fathers of that age intended to promote drugs. Like Ram Dass said "it tokk me years to realize high wasn't free, now I just want to be free" It is a shortcut into the vortex, but better to get into the vortex and then choose to be high ...if you desire

  • It seems to me like he is thinking of all this as he stands there and that is absolutely incredible

  • Great wise man. Even more amazing he lived in the town. 10 minutes drive away.

  • Alan Watts was a conscious individual. All of the ignorant comments about drugs, ect... are comments left by unconscious people.

    Indeed to all~~~

  • @IndeedmyFriend Yes to the unconcious mind identified. i.e brainwahsed by society/ parents, they think people like this are insane. But their liberated. No fear, just joy, peace love, and everything he everything he needs

  • @YuCme93

Everyone was a lot more laid back in 1971 in England where he was and in the West. Except for the squares / straights. The age of surveilance and large integrated social databases (like facebook and YT!) were not even foreseen clearly at that time.

The one place it's easiest to be free and "sovereign" is in your mind. That's why it is the principle target for attack by the conditioning processes. They want happy slaves as Huxley put it...

I prefer to be free like Alan Watts.

  • I've listened to almost every lecture, but I wish there was more quality video of Watts like this.

  • where did het get the saffron orange t shirt.

  • This is some seriously amazing stuff, thanks so much for posting. The idea of this brilliant man continuously turning around and looking at nature while contemplating the nature of reality.....it's just excellent. Seriously. Thanks again.

  • @greenfruitface also if ya notice with each point he makes he makes a step up and forward then looks back as if to say it is what he is learning each time he looks back at nature

  • @greenfruitface Yeah he is seriously cool. Here's the real thing. For the snow job, just look at a Scot with a very similar name...

  • @greenfruitface ya it makes me wonder how much was written or if he had any idea what he was going to say at all....

  • @greenfruitface I agree, I think he's absolutely right at 3:05-4:30. We are truly limited. It's fun to watch this man point out facts decades ago and realize that only now we're only beginning to understand the points he made.

  • @greenfruitface < I would pour Alan double dose of hemlock for telling so many truths in such a short time.

Thanks Mark for posting such a gr8 work.

  • When people claim that drugs are reponsible for what he's saying, they are really saying "I don't understand" or "I only deeply think when im on drugs".

  • drugs are not responsible but there is no need to be negative about substances which altar your conciousness .

i know for a fact Alan Watts didnt have your view on drugs.

  • @topbluffa1 How can you say that when you don't know what my view on drugs are? I think you missed the point of my comment, it's possible that you were offended but i was in no way making a bash on drugs. Drugs being far too vague of a term to be judged as a whole. I was simply asking "Why is it so hard to believe this man could think so deeply about things without chemical stimulus?"

  • well, my helpers in understanding of some of these things were depression and loneliness

  • argh reading through the comments and seeing this "drug use", "dope out", "drugs will unbalance you" etc bs just makes me sick to my stomach..go read Doors of Perception. Turkey dinner will unbalance you. Psychedelic substances have a tremendously powerful potential for exploring the body-mind construct, the likes of which mere observation alone will NEVER give you, and i'm an avid meditator. There was nothing taboo about psychedelics 40 years ago, before mass-media led pop culture stepped in.

  • Good stuff, seemed like a really peaceful guy.

  • Weed at its best.

  • You don't need psychedelics to understand anything. But they sure as hell speed up the process.

  • @adinfinitumforever For some...

  • @adinfinitumforever Yes, but only to a certain level... Do you think science will be able to actually find the ultimate building block, or the origin of life or the universe? Because billions have already been spend to find it.

  • @adinfinitumforever

Is the most intelligent contribution you can make to this discussion?

  • @adinfinitumforever actually not

  • Ugh. You don't need to drugs to appreciate or understand these things.

  • @Mydinsky I hope no one thinks I was trying to say that.

  • @bendtx Sorry. I misunderstood you. No harm done i hope.

  • @nipsixa absolutely not:)

  • @bendtx Well, in the words of Eddie Izzard, guess i just have to kill myself then :) Sorry for the mistake. I have a few buddhist videos up here, and every now and then some guy comes in with a pot story or mushroom theory. I just reacted. Right then. Back to the listening :)

  • looking at things in rows. more wiggles!!! more wiggling!! we call it chaos because we can't grasp the order hahahahaha!! we control freaks cause we're out of control!! or at least we think we are

  • I am what I eat. the spaghetti must be the plate because it sits on top of the plate, and I must be the spaghetti because I have water in me and water grows crops like wheat which is where I get my spaghetti from and so I am eating myself when I eat the spaghetti but I am also eating the plate because the spaghetti is the plate and without the plate there would be no spaghetti - Philosophy 101

  • Those words are as my own ... It strikes me too when I see where I am and in what I am ... where this goes - creating a system on top of our primary system :/

  • the obstacle is the path-zen proverb

  • @Zachdudeio2 what he's trying to say here is that we are eagerly using reason to exploit this world; we seek in physical and reasonous while we should seek inside our selves and with intuition :/

  • yeah obi-wan kenobi: did lucas rip off his persona? I did hear somthing allong those lines and the similarlties are uncanny!

  • @krustyegg

    a theory worth exploring

  • i wish i could drop acid with alan watts

  • Yo, Mr. @underage4page, who wishes he could drop acid with Alan Watts: You can drop acid with Alan Watts. It's easy. Just drop acid.

  • @uggati Too true. Just tell me where I can get the acid!

  • @uggati Well said. Bravo.

  • I listen to this as a meditation. His words take me to a deep peaceful place in my feelings. Thank you Alan Watts.

  • Oh shit, that last sentence is haunting.

  • Stop fighting with each other, you comment-guards. Especially with - this - as the video. Coexist.

  • its so strange... seeing footage of Alan as he is speaking has a much more profound effect on me, i cant say exactly why.

  • Check out Leonard Shlains talk on the Alphabet Vs. the Goddess for further clarification on how language distorts our ability to relate with nature.

  • Thanks, this is the first time I've seen a real video of Alan. Been reading his works since the mid 70's. I enjoy all the ridiculous arguments too. Very entertaining.

  • is this all improv'd? If so that's very very impressive. If not its very impressive.

  • Why do you people use every single video on youtube as an opportunity to argue? I hope you find better things in life

  • This made me smile so much

  • to everyone who said that watts resembles sagan: watts was doing his thing way before sagan, so sagan should actually resemble watts actually. just saying.

  • not so alarming since it was kinda obvious...

  • @3:42 bingoooooooooooo

  • After watching this i get a BIG urge to just go out in nature and speak with myself :)

  • in the ending here he says that we may have to come to the conclusion that the universe may be smarter than we are. However, he is contradicting himself if he believes that we in fact are the universe, so we cannot be smarter than what we already are.

I do however agree that in our conscious thought we have a narrow way of thinking about a much broader reality.

  • @kazakastan78 "Man plans, El laughs."

  • @ElShadaiLives Sounds like monotheistic bullshit to me.

  • @ExposingTheGOP I don't recall letting you out of your cage? How long did it take you to type that? 2 or 3 days? If I want any scat out of you, I'll scrape it off your teeth.

  • @ElShadaiLives Spoken like a true Judeo-Christian, with excrement in your mind and in your mouth. Your religion is venom to the human mind and it's apparent from the vacuous nature of your "criticism" that your pea-brain is infested with it.

  • @ElShadaiLives letting me out of my cage? Why, yes...since that is exactly the frame of mind in which you judeo-christians live...enslavement, imprisonment and oppression of the mind. Thanks for the Freudian slip, Christer.

  • @ExposingTheGOP Anyone that believes they descended from apes is in a cage in their own mind. Someday, perhaps, a few billion yrs, you descendants from apes will catch up w/ Created Man. But, highly doubt it. Question, why are there still apes? There bones go back a lot furuther than man's do. Where are the transitional forms? There are none. You believe in myths w/o proof.

  • @ElShadaiLives There is no debate to have with someone as abysmally and painfully ignorant, stupid, uneducated, unscientific, superstition-embracing, hatemongering vile piece of religious filth like yourself. Darwin was 1,000,000,000 times brighter, more educated and insightful than you could ever hope to aspire. You are a laughable gnome, an unaccomplished loser, a fanatical religious thug. Go fuck your Jesus in the ass, he likes it that way!

  • @ExposingTheGOP Did U dredge that up from yer deranged mind all by yerself or have help? If E was fact it would be called the Law of Evolution. That will never happen. I studied the same B.S. you were fed; the brain washing didn't take. U believe we started as soup. Real science knows that is impossible as life is too complicated for that speculation to be proven.

  • @ElShadaiLives Typical KKKristian.. You must have the last word, right? What happened to the Holy Babble's warning against "vanity" and "pride?" It appears your pridefulness in attempting to prove your supremacy over others has betrayed your faith, worshiper of superstition, denier of science. People like you keep our republic stagnant and adherent to religious bigotry, divisiveness and dangerous superstition. Watch Richard Dawkins' Virus of Faith...its practically your biography!

  • @ExposingTheGOP "WHY, if species have descended from other species by insensibly fine gradations, DO WE NOT EVERYWHERE SEE INNUMERABLE TRANSITIONAL FORMS? Why is not all nature In confusion instead of the species being, as we see them, WELL DEFINED?" Charles Darwin

  • @ElShadaiLives ElShadaiLives is a religious fanatic, anti-scientific buffoon who has no job, lives with his parents, and probably jerks off to Trinity Broadcasting Network, and has so much time on his hands, that he is ready, willing and able to distort quotes from a Great Man, something he can never hope to be.

  • @ExposingTheGOP Isn't slander a criminal act? The quote is correct. Your precious false-el said it.

  • @ElShadaiLives No, you moron. it's not a criminal act. That would ineffectuate the First Amdendment. Of course, that's what you Christians want, a dictatorship that would criminalize dissent, kind of how the Inquisition burned people at the stake for heresy. ElShadaiLives is living proof of religious intolerance, hatred, oppression, divisiveness and mental illness.

  • @ExposingTheGOP Defaming my character is slander. Telling ppl I have no job & live w/ my parents is slander. How serious is slander? In Roman times it was the death penalty. The Darwin quote is ez to look up. Sry, I forgot, U don't like to research the negative side of the fraud U've been indoctrinated w/. I'll not play yer infantilisms anymore. "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet." Matt 10:14

  • @ElShadaiLives I'm surprised that I'd find a creationist here; typically genuine, free thinking philosophy excludes religious ideologies. I may only recommend that you spend some time contemplating the essential meaning of the concepts you use to describe reality. After you lose respect for the objective meaning of grammar and syntax, you might find the concept God to be equally ephemeral.

  • @Mattprole Everyone has religious beliefs. You do not have to belong to a established corporate religion to have your own beliefs. Research it out. Look in the etymological dictionaries, but the best proof of what I am saying is in the case law & what the Supreme Courts says about religion & religious beliefs. It is an interesting study. & quite an eye opener.

  • @ElShadaiLives I don't know what kind of definition you use to come to that conclusion, but whatever it has become it is useless as a word, I might as well say everyone is an atheist, for not believing in many sorts of Gods. Everyone then becomes both religious and atheist in that way, better stick to practical definitions, in which case, it is totally wrong to say that everyone has religious beliefs. I for myself reject any belief having to do even indirectly with supernaturality

  • @2CSST2 If you had read the case law that I have read you would understand what I am saying. Everyone has a religoius belief. ( Something they believe in religiously) Read Thomas Paine. You don't have to believe in the supernatural to be religous.
