This is a very very clean version of the Moog SSB that I think we all have been waiting for. I guess they considered this a PSA back in the 70s when it was produced. Anyone know what year this was made?
There's one station when I first saw the Moog-version of the SSB: WBFF-TV Ch. 45 (Baltimore, Md.). It ran from mid 1977 to late 1982. We would love to see it brought back in High Definition soon.
Sadly none of the station here in Harrisburg, PA every used this version of the SSB at sign off sign on in the 70s and 80s. I heard this verision on here about a year ago.
Terry, I hope they will used that as part of a final signoff in analog TV history once it goes away, it will turn into snowy picture. That's going be a big change starting tomorrow wherever you're in the LA area watching KABC, they will show the "Moog SSB" film one last time before it goes away, KABC will be digital only for now.
I remember our Univision affiliate used the moog synth signoff (followed by a disco/jazz rendition of Summer of 42 for the signoff announcements).
One question, though. Was there an alternate version of the moog signoff? I remember the music for signon. But with different pictures. The ending was an actual shot of the US flag waving in the sky. Not sure if our local affiliate made that one using the music. I only saw it once. I only remember the flag at the end.
There are 3 versions of it. This was version 2. You can best tell which one it is with the rocket launch toward the end. The first had one of the apollo mision rockets, the one shown here has a satalite rocket. The third version has the Space Shuttle, along with a glimps of a stealth bomber.
If I can recall correctly, this same Moog SSB was used in the mid-late 70'd over WXEX-TV (Now WRIC-TV) channel 8, Petersburg-Richmond VA for both sign-on and sign-off.
If I can recall correctly, WXEX-TV (Now WRIC-TV) channel 8 Petersburg-Richmond (VA) used this same Moog SSB in the Mid-Late 70's for early AM sign-on and off.
I don't know about WABC, but I found out on another site that KABC (Los Angeles) used this SSB piece for their sign-off's and on's, back in the day. It was very widely used when I was a kid, when sign-off's were common; now, even low-budget and PBS stations are always on
I grew up in Greensboro NC and it was used by at least 2 stations at the same time for the 1st half of the 1980's! WXII and WFMY carried it, but another station had it before WXII used it.
I know this is irrelevant to the convo about this great SSB film, LOL, but in case any of you are wondering "raedizzle2006" and "huggyface" are one and the same. I dropped the raedizzle handle and have been huggyface awhile now. And can anyone tell me if any Florida stations carried this film? (I live there now) ;-)
I remember WXII used it, but so did WFMY (Greensboro) and WLFL (Raleigh). I couldn't normally get Charlotte stations, so I wondered what Queen City stations had it. WSOC, channel 9? Thanks for the info
I remember the Moog SSB it was very prevalent in the day...I saw it on at least 3 stations in my local area in NC. It's certainly a bygone era, as far as sign-off's go...even PBS is 24 hours now
KCOP 13 in my area also had this film, too! When I was little, I would catch these sign-offs and see Moog SSB three times= KABC's sign-off, and KCOP's sign-off and sign-on!
Wow..sure was a very prevalent SSB! I remember WFMY signed off with it, and WXII/WLFL signed off/on with it. I did see a clip on another site that featured KABC's carriage of the anthem. The USAF made several versions of the SSB, but Moog is the best.
I grew up in NC and it was used by WFMY, WXII, WLFL and I think UNC-TV (PBS) way back in the late 70's-early 80's. I last saw it on TV in I think 85 or 86...I'm so glad to see it again on here!
Although the video quality isn't the best here. It is my favorite rendition of the SSB and certainly puts tears in my eyes. It was also the sign on of KGAN in Cedar Rapids Iowa
I apologoze for the poor video quality in this wonderful montage. When and if I ever find a better version of this, I will be sure and post it here. This came from an old VHS tape I bought at a thrift store. Still, better to have something than nothing.
I agree with what you say and I thank you so much for posting this and I was looking for it. It is better to have something than nothing. I would love to know what the text was on the computer monitor in one point in the video.
It said, "The pilot who had everything." I watched it so many times as a kid, I can play it in my head! LOL I'm still glad to see it again on here. ;-)
What station in Charlotte used the Moog SSB? I couldn't get those stations (I lived in Greensboro back then)...WFMY & WXII both used it in the early-mid 80's before they became 24-7-365 operations.

Beautiful music, it made going to bed for me as a kid a more pleasurable event.

I remember the Moog SSB when it was usually shown on WNYE-TV in New York City a couple of years ago around 2000 before the station went 24 hours.

I.I.R.C., this Moog SSB film was used by KDNL (Channel 30, St. Louis MO) in the mid-1970s.
There's a better quality version of this clip on YouTube [KFSM (Channel 5, Ft. Smith AR) Sign-Off 1983].
dnm728 3 years ago
Yes, and also one from in the KABC-TV sign-off is posted here, too.
TerryT1976 3 years ago
@dnm728 WYES-TV Channel 12 in New Orleans used it for both sign on and sign off for several years as well.

Oddley enough Some stations I have seen that still sign off still use this Moog SSB to this day.

WHIO-TV in Dayton used this until 1990, when they went 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. They signed off on Sunday nights until 1998.

Did'nt WABC TV in New York last use this National Anthem on July 14, 1983?

I do beleive that WABC TV Ch 7 in New York was using this Moog SSB to sign off and on until switching to the
US Marine Corps SSB in July 1983.

WFTV used it in the mid 1980s right after they were bought out by Cox Broadcasting. (All Cox TV stations have used this at one point or another)
kenbob331 3 years ago
And when they signed off on Sundays (1990 till 1998), did they use some sign-off anthem?
raedizzle2006 4 years ago
I know for sure that both WXII (Winston-Salem), WSOC (Charlotte) and UNC-TV used this signoff. This is one of the greatest signoffs of all time!
