My grandmother who would have been 90 this year, has sang parts of this song all my life, but she didn't know all the words...mostly just the chorus with a big smile and a hip wiggle. It is wonderful to hear and see what she was going on about all those years...I could tell it was one of her favorites and she loved music. Thanks for posting this and creating a special moment for me today.
Slim was a dear friend of my parents. He was an unbelievable musician. There was nothing the man couldn't play. I remember him coming to the house when I was 7, picking up my toy guitar (plastic body and strings) and cranking away on it! He could play a cow bell like it had range and could read a menu and turn it into a song (as he did on "Yiprock").
AT one of the World's Fairs, a 45 was put in a time capsule with Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" on one side and "Cement Mixer" on the other.
This is hilarious, I thought he was a fictional character when I was reading On the Road, my curiosity got the better of me and it turns out his music is just as I imagined. Fantastic.
@toiseywoisey Man, that is so funny - you should be on the screen yourself! Do you have a comedy channel or something? Or perhaps you took the time to put a few hundred videos up here for everyone. Or maybe you just did sweet FA but you feel entitled to a gratuitous whinge, cos let's face it, that's fashionable. So what was it?
By the way, I didn't come here to listen to the fabulous Slim Gaillard. I came here to listen to you making a TOTAL ARSE of yourself; You're doing a great job!
My mother was engaged to slim a few years prior to him passing and she always told me stories about them travelling across Europe together and when I found this video and showed it to her she started to cry... Thank you for uploading this video I never believed it when she told me he could play palms up!
@ImaGimmeGimme Can you imagine him and Neal standing in the back of the audience at a Frisco nightclub, digging ever single note with the God! Yes! really incredible to see this video and imagine the crazy lives and stories. Kerouac is god
I lived near Slim in London in the early 80's and often saw him in the street wearing his trademark beret. We used to nod or smile at each other because maybe he recognised me from his gigs, but I was unfortunatley too shy to say hello. He has got to be the only guy who could play exciting Cuban piano jazz, bop-ish jazz, as well as great guitar, "sing-swing" and driving blues. On top of that he was a great comedian! what a guy!

I had a job that took me to San Jose often in the early 1960s, and during part of that time Slim was playing at the bar in a big blowling alley, Bowling was big in those days, and piano bars were popular. Slim was always very cordial, especially to people who were familiar with his work. Thanks for sharing this.
@pencpa No offense, but I can't resist commenting on your typo, it's funny.. There is a big difference between a bowling alley and a blowing alley. At least in Hollywood.
Wonderful! One of a select handful that never forgot that good music & entertainment were not opposing concepts. Come back to fly us all to the moon again, Slim.

@grhsvo I agree with you man, but chill. Listen to the music, and if you have something to say do it properly. If you want to hurl abuse at people like that go do it on a pop video; they have far larger egos than this guy.
Slim Gaillard performed a really good version of Cement Mixer on the Frank Sinatra show, but I can't find it anywhere. I head it on the radio once, and the DJ said it was from a compilation. Does anyone know where I can get/hear it?
Slim's talent, I feel, was never fully realized because..like Fats Waller, he achieved his greatest success using comedy to advance his musical talent. He visited Detroit in 1990 and I had an opportunity to spend several hours with him.. I was shocked to hear of his passing less than a year after we had met. I remember him as if it were yesterday. RIP, Slim, you were really one of a kind!
the thing about his comedy is, well, IT'S STILL FUNNY!
-more than a half century later ! -
most of the other comedy from his era now seems antiquated & aimless...
slim's imagination & legendary quick wit now seem almost poetic;
his grace & style in delivery -not to mention his incredible stamina...i played a gig with him (lucky me!) in 1989 or 90 in toronto, and this guy was hands down the most energetic musician on the stage, even after three long sets...truly a great man!
Cheers Kerry, Ted Matthews here aboard my canal boat in Lancaster (Canal) in the sunny NW corner of England. Thanks for this rare treat - talk about great musicians --wow Slim was de DADDY!. What a fantastic talent he was and the size of those magic hands. Can't thank you enough man.
My husband's Dad used to sing Cement Mixer to him when eating a breakfast of oatmeal in the morning~ A little tradition that my husband sang to our kids as well.
Nice to see where my father in law got his inspiration & making a memory for generations!
I came across Cement Mixer on another vid, and reminded me, when I was real young, I used to turn my trike upside down, and spin the front wheel, and picture I was mixing cement, and think of this song.))
Great clip. Many thanks. This looks and sounds like it came from Steve Allen's syndicated Westinghouse series. The obvious Westinghouse reference in the song is a clue but you can also hear Steve and his producer laughing at the opening joke.
Slim Gaillard, the father of Janis Hunter (Marvin Gaye's wife) ... also he was the band that Mongo Sanatamaria hooked up with when he came from Cuba ...
this is great, love his piano playing, makes me laugh like Chico Marx does! ;) I remember hearing cement mixer on an advert about 15 years ago and my uncle told me about Slim, but I'm reading On The Road now and it made me think of looking some stuff up on youtube. Glad I did, really cool stuff.
Great Thanx for posting this. Slim Gaillard was a great musician, an outstanding performer and a cool and kind man. I met him some thirty years ago. @3rdStoneFromTheSun ThankYou! I remember this song from my childhood. Don't ask me why, but the Tune "popped" into my head this morning and I knew I would find it on YouTube. I had no idea the Artist was so talented. I am a Jazz fan and have a small collection, "Slim" Gaillard wil soon be added. Amazing Talent. Bravo!!
I was playing Slim Gaillard's "Siboney" cd at the bar here in NOLA. Ray Davies of the Kinks asked me who it was.Ray had worked with Slim in the movie Absolute Beginners. "That's Slim?"
HIs song, in the movie "Selling Out" is awesome. The whole AB soundtrack is fantastic.
I think Slim had an interesting life and there should be a movie about him, including being like a father to Marvin Gaye.
thanks much man! My favorite Jazz musician by far. He played with all the greats but not so many people know him. Just fantastic! Best music for lindy hop ever IMO!
I actually heard Slim on the local radio and he really amazed me coz he was singing a greek classic with his unique slam jazzy stye and i was stoned! Never heard sth like that before. For my bad luck, the radio producer didnt announce the name of the singer and i was left behind in my car wandering around the city. Couple of months later I learned his name and tried to find the song... but no results yet...
Do you have any idea about that Greek song?I cannot find it out!Thanx!!
Might be Yeproc Heresy. Sounds foreign but is actually Slim's own jive voutie language. One story has it that Slim was stranded in Greece for six months at the age of twelve. He spoke numerous foreign languages.
Never saw this before...it's wonderful. I collect Slims records on 78rpm, got a whole mess of 'em...but this performance smokes 'em all (that's before there was a HYDRO folks).
This is amazing. Usualy you can tell studio audiences are faking it, but you can tell here that they are really diggin' it. Such an amazing musician. A film needs to be made about his life.
My niece Jenny and brother Mark let me know that you posted this. Fantastic. My name is Jan and I am Slim's daughter. We are wondering where you got this?? It is so clear and really gives us that feeling that he is still around. Thinking of doing a film of his life since my brother and I work in the industry. Such a rich character. Please let us know. IT would make a great HBO or Showtime film...Thanks so much. I will now show this to my grandson, Nolan.
Dear Jan: Slim sounds a bit brighter than that dumbass druggie Marvin Gaye, but listening to both is like a musical lobotomy. Oh sure, you're thinking of doing a film of Slim's life, but that would involve writing, directing and work and stuff. As with the photogenic but modestly talented Nona, you're "in the industry" but not doing much.
@jgjg5 ... I am sure you must know this but there has already been a documentary made of Slim's life. I believe it was made for British television. I think it was a two part program made by Arena...... Normally Arena is a one hour show but Slim's story was so colourful and intrigueing that they made two separate films.
My grandfather used to say these lyrics to me when I was a small kid and I had no idea what he was saying! Now, 40 years later, I see the song referenced in On The Road by Jack Kerouac. Youtube helps solve another one of life's great mysteries!
True talent. You can't be taught this stuff, you either have it or you don't. Sad that talented people are not immortals. But with videos like this, we have them forever.
Oxydol & Westinghouse were the Sponsor`s of this TV Show if you Did`nt PICK-UP on that !

Might be Yeproc Heresy. Sounds foreign but is actually Slim's own jive voutie language. One story has it that Slim was stranded in Greece for six months at the age of twelve. He spoke numerous foreign languages.
This film is a real treasure!

Thanks Jan! I've had this clip for years & only recently watched it again and began to appreciate Slim's great talent! He had an amazing career.

@jgjg5 You should seriously make a film about his life. He was amazing and one of my favorite musicians. Lewis

@jgjg5 Quick Google result = The Arena program is called "Slim Gailard's Civilization" parts I & II.

Thanks for posting! My grandfather is/was Slim Gaillard. :D I had never seen this video of him. I am now just a tad closer to him in spirit. :)
