To anyone protesting this, let me point out that, 1. This elephant had killed 3 or 4 (I'm not sure) people in the circus where it had been, and when poisoning her to put her down failed, Edison stepped up, and 2. This was before elephants were endangered, so it was regarded as more tolerable than it would be now, even though elephant populations in both Africa and Southern Asia are experiencing an explosion as of late.

Turns out his competitor (Tesla) made a superior technology which infuriated Edison. He despised the notion of competition and tried to get legislation to outlaw his competitors. He also sought the right to copyright concepts as well as technology. Thankfully he lost that one.

He publically went around the US electrifying stray dogs and cats and even this elephant to get people on his side about DC. People had not developed as many ways to kill humanely nor did they know that what they thought was humane, or what appeared to be humane, wasn't actually humane at all. The guillotine sure was a step up from many other forms of execution. So was electrocution. I'm not saying electrocution is the bets option, or even a better option, but at the time, it seemed to be so.

Yes, this happens a very long time ago and we can say we have evolved because we don't hang or electrocute elephants today.

But until today trainer maltread elephants and other animals in circusses and still elephants who decide to defend themselves are executed.
