I love Roger Corman's film and Howard Hawks' Scarface--A LOT better than the Pacino film--but I never saw the Richard Wilson film, Al Capone. It is not avalable anywhere!
Moran turned up the heat on the Capone organization and Big Al had enough. It was easy to pull off what they did because Capone had better relations with the Chicago PD and those in local government. He could also bring in guys like John Scalise and Albert Anselmi who came in from Italy. Unfortunately the two of them got too big for their britches, and had to be taken out as well. There were over 400 rounds fired in the massacre. Some of the 7 victims had bullets in their toes! A violent era.
Whatever version the bottom line is this...that whole incident was the end of Chicago's Northside Mob. It started in 1924 with the murder of then Northside leader Dion O'Bannion by Capone gunmen John Scalise and Albert Anselmi which set off a 5 year war between teh North and Southside gangs. The next leader Earl "Hymmie" Weiss went after Capone's mentor Johnny Torrio, but Torrio survived, and turned over operations to Capone who then took out Weiss. Moran became boss and tried to hit Capone.

Roger Corman seemed to be the most concerned with accuracies of that day. Even to the point of how they fell when they were shot. It's a great movie.
