Within reason, the Mini-mill is useful for the hobbiest, but like I said, it's not a Bridgeport.
Not everybody needs or wants a 1000 plus pound mill runing on 3 pase power. A mini-mill is affordable, available and doesn't weigh a ton (litterally), but it's definately limited when compared to the bigger machines. A dove tail? No problem.
I think he meant that using a end mill first to mill out a slot and and then followed by the dove tail to mill out the recesses reduces stress on the cutter.
Allthough i love these videos, i don't really see the point. I can't imagine many people having such an expensive machine at home. and when you are a professional gunsmith, you proppably already know how to do this stuff.
@BuecherFuerAlle, you can get a Bridgeport for 500$ and re-scrape it. the dovtail cutter, vise, v-block etc can be had for not too much money either. This could also be done on much small machines.
@BuecherFuerAlle You can pick up a Habor Freight mill for about $600. It's not a Bridgeport, but it will do the job.
These videos don't replace a good shop manual, but from watching them, the viewer can get a general idea of what's involved in each of the videos. For the hobby gunsmith, these videos can be a help.
@John4566442 600$? Really? Wow. I didn't know that. Hmmmm I think I'll look that up. I hate having to go to my local gunsmith and pay him a small fortune to fix even minor things really. So yeah, thanks for the info.
(I mean, 600$ wouldn't be cheap either. But It could very well pay off, at the end of the day.)
@ALAPINO Yes I`m going to have to the barrel is very short but they messed up I think at 5 ft it was shooting 6in low so they had lifted the front sight now it`s still not right so figured I`d go this route put a red dot or flip up loop sight .thanks
@MrMrtiki Since shotgun barrels are as thin as they are, it probably won't work to take that much material out. For what you want to do, it may work better to silver solder a sight base that's milled out to fit over the vent rib.
@AreThereNoMoreNames Oh hey there`s another option - Well I just brought it out it`s a Boito-CA Mod. Hiker made in Brazil F R AMANTINO 3IN CHAMBER It has a breach thickness about 3/16 the barrel is about a foot long good little pack gun for hiking for chickens .
@AreThereNoMoreNames Does being Canadian scare you -lol The reason why i`d like to put a dot or rear sight is I bought this the first time shooting it went to the pines wife spots a chicken so I pull up chicken walks away 3 more walk into view WTH bing bang boom missed every damn one was only 5-6 ft away now was the choke to small being so close aiming for head but then tried a target - Aimed @ center hit 6 o clock - aimed 12:00 o clock got center they lifted fore pin -even tried boresighting
@MrMrtiki Nah, it's not the Canadianinity that scares me, rather the fact that you just described a firearm that would be pretty illegal here in the 'States.
If it's shooting low, raising the front sight isn't going to make it shoot higher, it'll make it lower. Imagine that across your sights is a solid bar, raising the front sight is going to push the barrel down.
@AreThereNoMoreNames Well thats what I figured but they sent it back to me this way I sent them the target with it even with a boresight the view path would be thru the lower hammer the way they had it -. Ah shxt maybe i`ll just boresight it again and make a rear cradle and silver solder it on that will work too but is it going to make it rifle with a rear sight ? .
@MrMrtiki I'm not quite sure on Canadian laws, but sights are irrelevant to legal classification here. I can't see them doing that, though, as I do know a Canadian who has a legal short-barreled Remington 870 with the Scattergun Technology ghost ring sights added.
Keep in mind, too, that raising the rear sight is going to point the barrels higher up relative to your point of aim.
......Is it me or it seems like gunsmiths will always have a job.

@MavHunter20XX There are approx. 30,000 guns in the US for every gunsmith. Yes. Gunsmiths will always have a job.

MrAnimeGuru the dovetail cutter cuts a wider swath than an end mill.Get a clue before you open your mouth.

@MrMrtiki You had me scared there until I realized you're Canadian.
But the breech is thicker to handle the higher pressures, cutting into it deep enough to mount anything could be disastrous.
