Ferret proofing a house is a good idea. But don't overdo it people... leave your ferret a few safe spaces to crawl into, somewhere to stash her precious items she steals from your bags and drawers ;) and just observe your ferret for the first few months after you buy her/him. There might be things you won't need to worry about merely because your ferret will have absolutely no interest in them.

Hahahaha.... they aren't viscous if you treat them right and train them well... the more attention, the better. My little guy was feisty at first but he's now a love bug.... and you can trim their nails.

Any animal can bite and scratch. I work will ferrets and even UNHANDLED ferrets will rarily bite. The worst bites I have seen are from ferrets that grab someone with their mouth (remember they don't have thumbs) and the person rips their hand out of their mouth. I have had ferrets grab my hand and try to take it away from me. :D

They bite, and they can bite hard! But if trained well, they're really good. They bite more when they're younger and nip more when they're older. Claws need occasional trimming and baths arn't needed much. They're really playful too.

Ferrets only bite hard when you make them mad or scare them, their teeth and claws are sharp but, like a cat they don't use them unless they have to. They don't like to get wet but their good swimmers and are really cute and lovable:-)

ferrets comfort does matter and to keep their skin from drying out and their oil glands from going into OVERDRIVE you only bath them once every 1 to 3 months!!! talk to a vet!!! ferrets are itchy creatures to begin with !! I have had 4 and they are darling creatures!!!

i think that you should bathe ur ferret once every 2 weeks because the smell isnt the only thing that matters what matters is that your ferret is clean and comfortable. I know that ferrets cant stand baths i have 3 of them and its hard to bathe them but after they dry up their fur is nicer and softer... so just remember that smell doesnt always matter its mostly the ferret's comfort.

saw someone say u should wash them once a week, so wrong. they have certain oils that need to be maintained on their skin. i am a ferret rescue adoptee family and we get them all the time. baths should be done at most once a season unless its an emergency or they got totally covered. if you need to you can use a chincallas dust bath but if not it can wait

Yes, over all they are really fun and playful pets. I highly suggest one, but if your not a person who can deal with a little mess or nibbling of the fingers, then dont get it. Overall its a VERY playful pet.

I'd suggest bathing once a month. Too much & the skins oils over produce to compensate = more smell.

Change her bedding at least weekly. That is the very best way of keeping the smell down. The oils on the fabric tend to "go off" and smell bad. The ferret rubs in the bedding and HEY PRESTO! Smelly ferret.

That is so wrong, the more you wash a ferret the MORE it smells! That's because the natural oils get washed off and the scent glands (the smelly bits) have to work over-time to reproduce the natural oils. And it is not the fabric that "goes off", it is the natural scent of the ferret living on it that makes it smell, just like with any other animal. You should really do some research!

I seem to be getting told off by StarsHollowJinx for suggesting that a ferret can be washed once a month. The reply system doesn't whant to take my reply, so I'll try here. I did do my research. My 4 year old ferret smells fine and I change her bedding at least weekly. PLease re-read my original entry.

In addition, I'd like you to know that I did nearly a years research before getting my ferret. Some books are crazy enough to suggest bathing once a week! Something which I totally DISSAGREE with. Others endorse removing the sent glands. Which is MADNESS. Like human sweat, ferret oils can oxidise on bedding. This alters the smell. I'm really upset that I'm getting negative ratings over this.

Sounds familiar. Lilly (my ferret) went for up to 6-7 weeks without the need to wash during winter. Then one day it would suddenly be wiff city! It was usually my fault for leaving her bedding too long. She really enjoys drying off after a shower. I keep meaning to post the vids.
