There is something called Bergmann's Principle which states that animals from colder climates are larger than those of the same species from warmer climates. That being said, these "reintroduced" wolves were brought in from Alaska and are NOT the same as the original wolves. They're much larger and stronger, which means they're able to bring down larger, healthy prey and require more of it to feed their larger, stronger packs. I'd say we've screwed up nature enough.

I´ve been to the Yelowstone this year, and there is elk all over the place! Elk, antelope, Big horn sheep, bison. The grizzley bear population incresed, because they can chase off the wolves from their kill and eat better, or feed on the leftovers, also moos population increased after the reinroduction, as well as the beaver´s, moose´s, foxes.... Thay have a good impact, The elk population dropped, but only to the normal level, they were overpopulated before... I think the wolves do their job.

The problems come with the surrounding states that the federal government shouldn't have control over. Yellowstone is small in compared to the rest of the area the wolves are at. Wolves aren't decimating the Elk herds, they are returning the numbers to normal levels. And if they do overshoot it will only drops their own levels.
Predator and prey interaction always fluctuate. The Elk herds will drop, but then the wolf population will too. There is no way the wolves can cause an extinction of elk, even in secluded areas.
And stop pretending you care about the elk for anything else then your own selfish uses.

What happened in YNP and outside of YNP with larger wolves from Canada being introduced in 1995-1996 borders on criminal activity. A number of federal laws were violated and ignored. Including the federal Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937. Elk were restored to many areas of Montana thanks to this Act. But funds were stolen from this program for trips to Canada and help finance the re-introduction of these killer wolves to YNP,Idaho ,Wyoming and Montana. No trial no jail time, cover-up, liars.
Crashing both populations of predators and prey will appeal to no one. Since we are responsible for all game and predator population management now since we took out predators in the first place, we must continue to do so or we will see a crash of epic proportions. Research must be done to determine a healthy ratio of wolves to prey, and thin them to that number. Otherwise, this will continue to be a disaster. BTW, wolf pop. density in Yukon and AK are 5 per 1000km2.
To continute from that last post- The answer to rebalancing populations is not to re-intorduce wolves and not manage their populations, thats craziness. Wolf densities are very low in natural places where wildlife populations are near natural levels. There are far too many wolves in yellowstone for a healthy density. They are breeding very fast, and should be controlled. If that does not happen, then the elk will crash, then the wolves will starve, then balance will be restored.
This is an interesting issue to say the least. The re-introduction of wolves to yellowstone was a good idea, in theory. However, the problem goes back to when wolves were removed from this ecosystem in the first place, in the 18-1900's. The same goes for bears. There were once 200,000 bears in North america, now barely 2000 exist in the southern 48 states. Once you remove all those predators, the prey populations go out of whack as well.

There is something called Bergmann's Principle which states that animals from colder climates are larger than those of the same species from warmer climates. That being said, these "reintroduced" wolves were brought in from Alaska and are NOT the same as the original wolves. They're much larger and stronger, which means they're able to bring down larger, healthy prey and require more of it to feed their larger, stronger packs. I'd say we've screwed up nature enough.

I´ve been to the Yelowstone this year, and there is elk all over the place! Elk, antelope, Big horn sheep, bison. The grizzley bear population incresed, because they can chase off the wolves from their kill and eat better, or feed on the leftovers, also moos population increased after the reinroduction, as well as the beaver´s, moose´s, foxes.... Thay have a good impact, The elk population dropped, but only to the normal level, they were overpopulated before... I think the wolves do their job.

The problems come with the surrounding states that the federal government shouldn't have control over. Yellowstone is small in compared to the rest of the area the wolves are at. They only need a couple wolf packs in the park for the size of it.

Predator and prey interaction always fluctuate. The Elk herds will drop, but then the wolf population will too. There is no way the wolves can cause an extinction of elk, even in secluded areas.

Elk were found in most of the lower 48 states at the time the Europeans came to North America, and because of stupidity and over hunting, the elk were almost eradicated. Because of the efforts of conservationist and organizations like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, mostly made up of sportsman, that the elk herds rebounded to the levels we see today.

@portucky Research also shows that the wolves have altered the elk on yellowstone where some are not even coming into estrous....they avoid the places that wolves frequent most (lush meadows etc) so they have a negative gain through winter which is hard when trying to grow a fetus. Its great they released wolves onto yellowstone...that comes at a price to everyone there and once they get off the park, should be fair game and its time they delist them to state wildlife agencies to manage.

What happened in YNP and outside of YNP with larger wolves from Canada being introduced in 1995-1996 borders on criminal activity. A number of federal laws were violated and ignored. Including the federal Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937. Elk were restored to many areas of Montana thanks to this Act. But funds were stolen from this program for trips to Canada and help finance the re-introduction of these killer wolves to YNP,Idaho ,Wyoming and Montana. No trial no jail time, cover-up, liars.

Crashing both populations of predators and prey will appeal to no one. Since we are responsible for all game and predator population management now since we took out predators in the first place, we must continue to do so or we will see a crash of epic proportions. Research must be done to determine a healthy ratio of wolves to prey, and thin them to that number. Otherwise, this will continue to be a disaster. BTW, wolf pop. density in Yukon and AK are 5 per 1000km2.

To continute from that last post- The answer to rebalancing populations is not to re-intorduce wolves and not manage their populations, thats craziness. Wolf densities are very low in natural places where wildlife populations are near natural levels. There are far too many wolves in yellowstone for a healthy density. They are breeding very fast, and should be controlled. If that does not happen, then the elk will crash, then the wolves will starve, then balance will be restored.

This is an interesting issue to say the least. The re-introduction of wolves to yellowstone was a good idea, in theory. However, the problem goes back to when wolves were removed from this ecosystem in the first place, in the 18-1900's. The same goes for bears. There were once 200,000 bears in North america, now barely 2000 exist in the southern 48 states. Once you remove all those predators, the prey populations go out of whack as well.

Doesn't your constitution state that you have a right to make a living and a right to security. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 is clear the decision to list or delist is the USFWS.The USFWS declared the grey wolf fully recovered under the Recovery Plan.Was Malloy pressured by the current administration to relist the grey wolf? I think that could be true since researching information I found obama's environmental czar mentionedd more restrictions and listing of wolves and the polar bear.This maybe something worth looking into a political decision rather than biological.

Excellent video and discussion of the problem. I really wondering how Judge Malloy could have made such a flawed decision to relist. It was nearly a year ago he made the same decision to delist and ok to harvest 20% of the 1350 wolves in Idaho and Montana.We have 2000+ now. I am even more curious how he can make a decision at all. It is the USFWS who makes the decision to list or delist under the Endanered Species Act of 1973.Malloy overstepped and caved in to Earthfirst and other whackos.

They value lifestocks more than a RARE species.
I'd rather shoot a lifestock if I would be stuck between an endangered species and lifestock.
