The very first concert I ever saw was Geils at the old Boston Garden on the Love Stinks Tour in '81. I was in sixth or seventh grade.
Growing up in Boston in the 70s these guys were like Gods. They definitely don't get the respect they deserve, and I think a lot of people just know their one or two hits like "Centerfold."
I saw J Geils open for Emerson, Lake & Palmer at Madison Square Garden. They were WAYYYY more exciting than the headliners too. A good times, party band!
Ahhhh the seventies, from what I can remember it was a hell of at time. Sex,drugs and very loud rock & roll......A time when if their was a law against it we broke it. Why ?? Hell, Why not...........Nothin but a party!!!!
I've been fortunate enough to see these boys a number of times in the 70's & 80's and I've maintained they are probably the most rockin' in your face blue collar rock bands that ever existed.,Peter Wolfe, Magic Dick and his "lickin' stick", Jerome, et. al. absolutely KICK ASS when on stage. One gig in 1983 they were he "warm up" band for the Rolling Stones at Candlestick Park and they fucking made the Stones look like a stumbling garage band. And that aint no easy feat. They should tour again.
Total bullshit: J. Geils not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I bet Bon Jovi gets in first, a horrifying possible travesty. And where's Johnny Winter on the ballot? Give me a break...
Hey Riversidekidd you said it. I saw them in 73' I was 13 and hooked. Could not get enough. I saw so many bands after that never came close to JGB. Stephen was so so underrated. J.Geils guitar playing is second to none. I worked for many labels and had the opportunity to see bands all over the country and out. JGB blew them all away musically. We were prob @ some of the same shows. 1980 I went to Madam Wongs 4 suprise guest. No idea it was JGB. Seth, Dicky & DK man they rocked.
Kickass tune...Seth Justman's custom Leslie stacks are full of win, as is the white B-3. I could go for that rig... ;-) They could sure lay down some monstrous blues-rock, their later poppy direction seemed to obscure their well-steeped blues roots. Great cut!
@TheB3Nut I once seen JGB, back in 1976 in Long Beach Ca. I was 15 yrs. old at the time. I remember Seths Leslie stacks also, back then he had 4 sets w/polished horns. The arena would shake when he played. I read somewhere, his B-3 is a special set-up w/the leslie stacks. There is no one like him, he's one of a kind. Seth and MD are great on this version, great pairing.
I attended this concert (must have been 1979...damn...;_)) in Essen/Germany. I was barely 15 and thought this has to be the baddest badass R&B performance of a band in the galaxy forever (probably was). Thanks for posting to everybody helping to put on almost the whole gig here. These guys really burned their hottest flame these days....Greetings from Germany, the upcoming Football Champion 2010.
I just seen the Rock and Roll Hall of fame concert on HBO, when are they going to come to their senses and induct JGB. J Geils would put on a great show when inducted.
I seen them so many times, especially in the seventies, I never get tired of them. I have to say Stephen Bladd was underrated rock drummer, he's great. Magic Dick was never know for his dance skills, But man, he looks so cool in his black leather suit, and white snake skin boots. J. is such great guitarest, he said once in a interview, he would never be as good as clapton or hendrix, but he sure can play, especially jazz.
@riversidekidd J sells him self short he is a world class guitarest, but Peter is the best lead singer I haver see, great stage presents, good voice, reacts well with the crowd that`s a good front man, like Dennis from Dr Hook.
@riversidekidd You got that right! I have been singing Stephen praises for years and miss what he brought to the band. I saw this tour and loved it!!!! I was the best of everything. I am glad they finally got back together.....but it ain't the same.....he had this cool, unpretentious, lay down the back beat thing that I miss.........this performance is a good example of that. Much thanks to whoever posted it!.
Great video!
