God this game's story is dumb. I'm currently at the bit where after turning into a lizard, then back again, Fang is being electrocuted by a sword with three faces, two voices and one hand. Then Vanille said something vaguely inspirational/a one-liner. Then everyone came back to life for a cliche happy ending. I tried to like this game, I really did. It's horribly written though.

@Zaxex I kind of agree that they didn't do a good job presenting the story in this game. The storyline in this one is a bit too linear, but the plot actually goes way deeper than what was shown in this game, and a bit darker, too. They elaborate more on the story in the sequel, which I would suggest playing or reading up on, at least to understand the whole plot, and reading up on the mythology. I think it's all pretty interesting, but that's because of the mythology they have for this series.

Fang attacks Vanille in order to mercy kill her and keep her from becoming Ragnarok (I think), but the party saves her. However, they end up becoming Cie'th somehow and beat Fang up until she transforms. Then she turns back, the party is retconned back to normal, and they defeat Orphan and live happily ever after.
@frotenberguen The long answer is much more complicated. Parts of this scene aren't even explained in-game. Instead, they're told in the Ultimania. Apparently, some god/goddess named Etro was stalking the party and turned them back into humans or something. It's all unnecessarily overcomplicated.

in short-the first goddess ever was muin, she created a son, buniberzei. he wanted to be ruler and killed his mom. he made 3 original fal'cie-pulse, lindzei and etro. pulse created the world,lindzei protected it, etro looked like muin so buniberzei was afraid and gave her no power. she felt lonely and tore herself apart and entered the realm of dead.there she met muin who gave her the power of death. from etro's blood rose mankind which was cursed by death.....
..buniberzei(the maker) crystalized to sleep and ordered the other two to find the gate to the realm of dead to kill muin and erase death, they would do so by killing many people forcing the gate open.here fang transformed into incomplete ragnarok which was too weak to defeat orphan. and orphan had to fight cause it was his instinct. the others were made c'ieth cause they rejected their focus but etro didn't grant them passage to death and returned them to life. capish? xD

Now, the more I think about it, the more I think this story makes little sense (they kill Orphan while they said they were going to protect it before... what the hell !?). The plot is never very clear either (and yet I played games with complex/convoluted stories before). But I enjoyed most of the characters and their relationship... and the graphics/art were gorgeous.
@FearT3HxoxTaco actually, if you think about it the Fal Cie Anima - the one to brand the characters - branded everything in the area, thus there's a good chance. Also from a few random cutscene's across Gran Pulse we see the baby Chocobo travelling with them as if it has a good reason to (other than Dahj). The only thing stopping it maybe would be if Fal Cie were THAT cruel enough to brand a little Baby Chocobo. If that's the case, then forget Serah & Dajh, they're all there to save the chocobo
i don't think they actually turned to Cie'th. i think they were just warped away or something. like they said it was more "smoke n mirrors", probably a trick to get Fang to outburst in anger and release in Ragnarok form. Also for the people asking why they want to die but why the world doesn't end when they kill Orphan is bc i believe Ragnorok has to do it (ragnorok actually means end of world) but they did it instead.
Yeah... I thought I understood what was going on but now I'm not so sure. Why does Fang attack (or attempt to attack) Vanille with her spear??
I thought that she did it to gain grief to become Ragnarok, but after having watched it again, it looks more like she did it for self gain. And that is WAY out of character for Fang.

It reminds me the ending of Xenosaga 3. Let's torture some main characters with pure energy to force them to do something.
Now, the more I think about it, the more I think this story makes little sense (they kill Orphan while they said they were going to protect it before... what the hell !?). The plot is never very clear either (and yet I played games with complex/convoluted stories before). But I enjoyed most of the characters and their relationship... and the graphics/art were gorgeous.

@FearT3HxoxTaco actually, if you think about it the Fal Cie Anima - the one to brand the characters - branded everything in the area, thus there's a good chance. Also from a few random cutscene's across Gran Pulse we see the baby Chocobo travelling with them as if it has a good reason to (other than Dahj). The only thing stopping it maybe would be if Fal Cie were THAT cruel enough to brand a little Baby Chocobo. If that's the case, then forget Serah & Dajh, they're all there to save the chocobo

i don't think they actually turned to Cie'th. i think they were just warped away or something. like they said it was more "smoke n mirrors", probably a trick to get Fang to outburst in anger and release in Ragnarok form. Also for the people asking why they want to die but why the world doesn't end when they kill Orphan is bc i believe Ragnorok has to do it (ragnorok actually means end of world) but they did it instead.
