@InstantMix Haha - perhaps you're right. I already had this discussion once in the comments. In my defense, it's a reference to The Shining - and he says "Red-rum". But "Ree-drum" does fall more in line with ReBirth and Reason.
LOL, i've been using reason for years and i've always called it REDdrum. but i guess REEdrum makes more sense... i'll continue calling it REDdrum just cause it sounds more sinister. Great vid BTW. I just started using nanoloop but i like the ease of reason so much more.
thanks for the great vid cicadacom! very informative series... do you know if its possible to send midi out of reason to a Gameboy DMG or any of the other devices you listed? (so you can sequence midi on the computer but use the GB sounds?)
i would assume that you can do it with a midines, but it would be great with a GB.

@rajam4 To my knowledge, there's no way to do what you're wanting to. I don't think there's any way currently to send midi information to a Gameboy but I'd love for someone to prove me wrong!
Dude, I have to send massive good vibes your way, because you really saved my butt on a deadline I had to make. If you check out my website, the tune I wrote using everything you talked is on the right, if you'd like to here it. Thanks a million!
You ever just use the "synth raw elements" patches for the NN19? They got a good amount of sampled sounds from Moog, Korg, etc for great chiptune sounds.
Scream distortion was already included in Reason 3, check the menu again. The Thor synth and the mastering suite you will have to buy Reason 4 to get.
so you're using reason which retails at about £200 to recreate sounds that are commonly found on cheap shitty childrens keyboards that retail for about £5? yeah makes total sense.
That's called a Midines - it's available from WayFar Industries. I was trying to post a link in this comment, but I don't think it will let me so just do a search for it and you should be able to find the site no problem.
Some kind of midi controller is useful. If you have a midi interface for your computer, any keyboard with a midi out should work. You can get a cheap M-Audio midi controller on the fly, though. You don't technically need a keyboard at all, but it's helpful.
No, that's a perfectly good question. I said I have the polyphony turned down to one. The polyphony is the number of different notes that are allowed to trigger at one time, ie: chords. So if the polyphony were set to, say, 4, if you held down four notes you'd hear them all, but when you pressed a fifth, the oldest note would shut off to make room for it. With the polyphony down to one it makes the Subtractor a monophonic synth, meaning no more than one not can play at a time. Does that help?
THANK YOU! It sounded like "Pelipity" or "Pelifity" when I heard it and the video definition was too low for me to read it. I have an IRL synth and have used polyphony in factory-made instruments, but I wanted to know the word for future reference/usage!
Just wondering if theres any chance you could tell us how you made that sick effect on your voice for the "fake and bake chiptunes with tetix" at the start?
Hey, that was made in Reason as well, using the vocoder. More than I can fit in 500 characters, but look up Reason Vocoder Tutorial and you're bound to find some info on how it's done. Basically just run a carrier (gritty synthesizer) and a modulator (spoken words - I just use redrum and load the vocal sample in, it's quick and easy) into the vocoder and then adjust the pitch using plotted notes in the sequencer.
Let's see... BDCut_Codes, SDCut_Codes, Hh_Jeepkeys, Hh_Congas, Bd_Heimat, Clp_Monk. They're all in the "Xclusive drums sorted" folder in the Redrum drums folder.
I would explore using different ones, though. You can get some interesting sounds if you play around a bit.
Thanks. I tried a whole bunch of different samples and got some neat sounds from them. I just wanted to know which you used 'cause I liked some of them.
For scream, same deal. Loaded it up with default settings, flipped the distortion type to "digital" and then played with the rate and resolution knobs till I got a sound I was happy with.
All the subtractor and maelstrom patches are the default patch that you get when you load the synth into the rack. Hopefully you should be able to follow what changes I'm making in the tutorial.
I have a midi controller keyboard that I use - but no actual hardware. I once had a Trtion, JP-8000, Microwave XT - but I got rid of it all when I started working in software.
Everything you see in the demo is stuff that can be done in Reason right out of the box without additional purchases.
Excuse me, cicadacom, but what were the names of those last two things after the Korg DS-10 that the guy mentioned around the first minute of the video? Could you tell me what they were, please? I do apologize for not being familiar with them in my life.
All of the songs from the tutorial are available in the archive on my site. The one in this video is called "Boing Boing," but I didn't spend much time on it, so don't expect much. I'll put a link in the video description.
Yes, test6 is correct, don't think you need a Mac to make good music. Reason is cross platform as are applications like Live, ProTools, Milkytracker, etc. The PC also has some exclusives like Acid and Fruity Loops while the Mac gets Logic Studio and the simple (but not to be ignored) Garageband. All are great options, work wherever it makes the most sense for you. So long as you're having fun, that's all that really counts.
Very nice. And for those who are wondering, you can get all the same results, and more software on pc. Plus be able to run a few more instances. Not trying to start a pc vs mac war, just stating that for those think that they must have a mac to get good results. It's not true.
