I THINK this aired on the early morning WCW TBS broadcast which could explain why JR said "in this hour". I remember Muta's first match on the 6:05 pm broadcasts because that was when either they alluded to or came right out and said he was the son of Kabuki. And yes this was one of the last studio bradcasts. This studio was part of the Turner Techwood Drive location but Turner was trying to move all of his offices to the CNN center and get rid of the property.
Muta was such a sensation in 1989 that Gary Hart said in an interview that George Steele who was a WWF agent at the time offered for him and Muta to come to New York to work for the WWF but they refused because WCW was paying for Muta's Visa and they wanted a guaranteed contract but at the time Vince didn't give those types of contracts.
Yeah, this was a HUGE departure from what American fans were used to watching, and yeah, this may have been the last TBS studio broadcast. Too bad, the last link to the old school was dying
Your wrong. The last links to old school will die when Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker retire.
What's awesome about Muta's 89' run is he wasn't supposed to get over. According to Muta and Terry Funk, Muta was in the States to get seasoning to return to Japan where Inoki would give him a big push. He was so unique however that he ended up being a success.
@RSXemperor ???--"Undertaker"????---old school?? I don't remember that sort of cartoon character wrestling in the Carolinas. Percy Pringle is old school, Paul Bearer is McMahon sports entertainment for pre-schoolers
Last time I checked, You don't gotta wrestle in the Carolina's to be old school. Quit being blinded by hate for Mcmahon (even though it is hard). I love the NWA as well but just because a guy works for WWE doesn't mean he can't be a respected veteran or great wrestler. If you look beyond the character, Undertaker has been around since 1985 and his one of the most respected wrestlers in the business by young and old.
@RSXemperor You might want to check again if you think Undertaker, TL Hopper, Skinner, and The Goon are old school, because they're McMahon cartoon characters, even Stevie Wonder could see that. And my original point was about the TBS STUDIO--I enjoyed that setting more than Center Stage, and felt the show lost something when they moved.
You could have put him with a manager like Cornette. his greatness was that he was so awesome in the ring he did not have to talk good. Him not talking was part of his mystery. At least he should have a good run vs Flair. After the Funk program.
Even Gary Hart called him "The Great Moto". NWA fans had no idea what they were about to get. What a great year of wrestling. Too bad it ended too soon for Muta in the US.
I know that Keiji Mutoh used to practice Judo before entering to the NJPW Dojo, but it's too boring and stereotypical that every Japanese wrestlers who comes to the US has to "know" Martial Arts.
Thats just how its always been..I mean hell that is even in other media stereotype about Japanese/Chinese culture that they ALL kno martial arts and/or really smart!!! I think Scott Lost is tha only Oriental/Asian wrestler that wasn't focused on martial arts etc.
It was a very bad day for Cougar Jay, needless to say. I guess jobbers have to eat to.

Gary Hart sounds like a communist sympathizer or the father of the future WWF Mohammad Hassan.

They shoul dhave made Muta WC in late 89.

I disagree with that. Muta was great in the ring, but NWA Champ always had to be a good talker, IE( Ric Flair , Dusty Rhodes, Sting)

@bwall002 Center Stage was very watered down and the crowds weren't emotional like the techwood studio.

That's funny. They put Great Mota on the screen instead of Muta. Woops! :)

The reason they changed it was Moto was Japans answer to James Band in some fictional books so they changed to Muta.
