And now, many years later, China is buying and investing in a huge part of western companies and have bigger plans than NASA for the space industry over the next 20 years.
.....Does it really matter who leads the way? The thing that really matters is, we are all as one, HUMAN! So knowledge and advancement in intelligence the human way is what counts! As they say ... "Varity is the spice of life". In this case, different races in intelligence.
I read this profound man's book " The Ascent of Man " now decades ago. On the left myself in politics, I still hated to hear precious Western Civilization - a gift to ALL social and economic classes- in the final analysis- mocked and ridiculed by politically correct dimwits. To be sure, democracy and freedom can only be secure on the basis of civilization and respect for law and order- even while we advocate revolutionary change in PROPERTY law . How long can ignorant minds remain free ?
Open up the Flood gates let the Muslim in your western countries. Fast forward twenty years (given your slow birth rate) where will be your Western genes, cultural and history..... forgotten!
@ad2181 -If you actually watch the rest of these documentaries you realise that we owe a heck of a lot of our culture to the Islamic nations anyway.
Particularly worrying is your comment about losing our 'Western Genes'. Bronowski knew first-hand the danger of xenophobia and aspirations to ethnic purity. I fervently hope that most people have learned from history the cost of such ideals, although comments like this make me suspect not...
Bronowski was a beautiful man. I loved watching his Ascent of Man series on BBC television when I was a boy and I absorbed the book of the series which my elder brother gave to me as a present. I miss this man and his wonderfully benign intellect.
Now the world seems full of ranting mullahs and strident evangelists all intent on their precious Armaggedon. What savages we have now in this modern age vying for our attention. Compare these with the thoughtful, considered intelligence of this man.
What does it say about the internet, et al, when the "Condom and dry ice experiment" (which was presented by YouTube in the same cue as your post) has received over 2,000,000 views, and I am the 227th person to view this thoughtful offering?

I think you may be right in an aspect of that: the Internet does carry with it an element of cultural dominance with it. However, the Internet is slightly more democratic than you seem to be suggesting. As it spreads into the less-developed world, I think we will see a spreading of Western thought, but also a mixing in of non-western elements. The result, I think, will be a heterogeneous blend, with Western ideals forming the "cement" of it all.
@AntiWomyn If the internet is "regulated" and controlled however. this free flow of ideas is interdicted. Evidence China as well as the coming attempts to regulate it in the United States.
Let's not be pompous. Freedom isn't guaranteed under any system of government. Western politicians frequently lie to their electorate or at the very least they renege on promises.
We get a tick in a box once every five years and are expected to call that freedom?
Freedom to be ignored when more than a million people march on the street to prevent a war. That's not freedom, that's being managed. We are managed like farm animals.
@GabberNYC Actually the internet was developed in 1969 and Bronowski was well aware of its existence. At that time it was a relatively closed network of governement and academic computers, not what we know today as the World Wide Web.
@Skytroop I'm glad you stated that. For all people say about the history of the internet, in 1973 - the year "Ascent" was broadcast - there existed the stirrings of what BECAME the internet. In 1969, the first ARPANET message was sent; the message - if you could call it that - was the word "login." Two letters, l and o, got through. Then the system crashed (Oh, how much as changed!). ARPANET wasn't declared operational until 1975. And so it goes . . .
It's hard to say. Remember the Internet can bring the whole world to you, but you select what you see (or others will select it for you) and thus the unintended effect might be to make the whole world as small as you are.

He had no way to predict the advent of the internet in his time. The internet guarantees the western ways of though to dominate across all cultures.
