I meant to say that when people have trouble staying clean, they are usually self medicating, usually to cover up a undiagnosed psychological disorder. Sometimes it is a diagnosed disorder, but not only does prescribed medication not work when someone is taking drugs, but most of the time prescribed medication doesn't work at all. Now the pharmaceutical companies will find & kill me. A great loss for music & humanity.

People who have trouble staying clean, in the vast majority of cases, are "self-medicating", usually covering up some undiagnosed psychological disorder some , depression or some other mood disorder. @jarileigh This is very true. Studies have shown most addicts have anxiety disorders and/or some form of ADD. It's such a shame that addicts have been given such a stigma, imo, and this is a psych nurse speaking, we'd have better results teaching them to be functional addicts instead of forcing them into a guilt ridden existence without proper coping mechanisms. We have those receptors for reasons, our ancestors used those substances for thousands of years.

Doctors have no clue what a chemically sound brain looks like much less an unbalanced. @UNSUNGBAND As a psych nurse and someone who has had to utilize those services personally not sure if I should be offended or what. My theories are that toxins, prions, in the environment have screwed us up, could also be viruses they are responsible for evolution anyway and most of us are infected with the Epstein Barre virus as well as others. Psychology isn't like it use to be, where I work we use more holistic methods and are implementing restrain free treatment. Some do need help.
@UNSUNGBAND I just had to add one to this, as a survivor of a suicide attempt and severe trauma the help I needed couldn't be found with my family, they perpetrated the malfeasance. We have a safe place, I work with adolescence, help them find healthy outlets, go through their angst in a healthy way, we do a lot of yoga, meditation, nutritional work, etc. I refused psychotropics in treatment for myself, it is up to you to make that decision. My role is to empower.

YES you can try to help people by influencing them for the better BUT when it all comes down to it before the end of the day...if someone wants to do something they will do it. People make irrational decisions based on emotion, we want to protect them. Not all psychology is hell bent on medications, cognitive behavioral therapists I know generally try to help you with tools to use instead of medications. Are there quacks out there? Yes, that is any profession but we try to help people make rational decisions for their lives.

@Restless0ne Shannmon Hoon died as a result of an accidental overdose,He was actually on his way to recovering when that happened.And yes,it's very sad & a great waste.
@Restless0ne Yeah according to Wikipedia he died of a cocaine overdose and it caused him to have a heart attack. I checked the source as well. Not suicide, but an accidental overdose. It was certainly a preventable death, very sad. I really feel bad for his family.

I'm a Reggae singer and I'm trying to quit drugs. It's a battle that you only have yourself to blame for. I feel really bad for Shannon's family and band mates. What an amazingly unique voice. I started doing drugs before I started playing music...so it's been a long struggle for me.

Seriously everybody...He died from a cocaine overdose!!! It's everywhere! If you do any research on him, you will see in various places that you check that he did in fact die of a cocaine overdose on their bus, he had crawled up into his bunk where he died. It's a very, very sad story but true! I just wanted to sum that up for everyone who wants to know. RIP Shannon, you will be forever loved!
I knew Shannon in the late 80's.....I worked with his mother as a bartender. Shannon was frequently brought to the club by the police, because of various things.....sad his life was so short.
Ummm no smack was not his drug of choice, it was crack in which he over dosed from. Yea yea smack is what they all die from but if you READ about his life and get your facts str8 rather than listening to that guy who knows this guy who ate so much lsd that he thinks he is a big glass of OJ. Then you would know that yes he OD'ed from crack!

@Restless0ne Shannmon Hoon died as a result of an accidental overdose,He was actually on his way to recovering when that happened.And yes,it's very sad & a great waste.

@Restless0ne Yeah according to Wikipedia he died of a cocaine overdose and it caused him to have a heart attack. I checked the source as well. Not suicide, but an accidental overdose. It was certainly a preventable death, very sad. I really feel bad for his family.

I'm a Reggae singer and I'm trying to quit drugs. It's a battle that you only have yourself to blame for. I feel really bad for Shannon's family and band mates. What an amazingly unique voice. I started doing drugs before I started playing music...so it's been a long struggle for me.

@JQuile0881 it sucks...I know....the newest trick they've got these days is putting you on psychotropic meds when you're in rehab...anti-depressants to cure the "cocaine blues." who the hell isn't going to feel depressed after binging on cocaine for years and then stopping? more drugs is not the answer...the new drugs they put you on are even worse and more addictive than the illegal drugs...At least Shannon died with his dignity...Shannon will always be forever young...

I used to get high in the 1970's, this song was after my time, but I was thinking what a great song it would have been to get high and listen to back in the old days. Now I read the comments and apparently someone in the band died from drugs. What a buzzkill and how sad :(

Seriously everybody...He died from a cocaine overdose!!! It's everywhere! If you do any research on him, you will see in various places that you check that he did in fact die of a cocaine overdose on their bus, he had crawled up into his bunk where he died. It's a very, very sad story but true! I just wanted to sum that up for everyone who wants to know. RIP Shannon, you will be forever loved!

I knew Shannon in the late 80's.....I worked with his mother as a bartender. Shannon was frequently brought to the club by the police, because of various things.....sad his life was so short.
