Loin, très très loin de tous ces eunuques dévertébrés qui encombrent les rayons de disques et autres scènes d'opéra au titre de la vérité (quelle vérité?) musicale d'époque et autres grandes prêtresses du baroque (voix fixe, vibrato quasi existant, chant monotone)

    But being a runner-up in the popularity contest to Caballe isn't exactly a disgrace.

  • Tessitura troppo bassa. Peccato, la voce è sempre bellissima.

  • Una voce sicuramente superiore alla Caballe, neanche è accostabile, ma qui comunque l'aveva dimenticata a casa. Non prende.

  • Her best time was already passed, those portamento are out of stile today and sometimes she is out of time, but I do think she has been one of the best singers ever!! When her voice was good, the timber was even better than Caballè. She use to sing like an angel. And still her interpretation of this aria is really MOVING!!

  • Very beautiful, shame the recording is so soft. Another nice one is the performce of the "older retired" singers such as Caballe and Gencer, that is if you are not a purist.

  • It's well known she lost her vocal power in the middle of her career, reasons she is the one to know. I don't know in theater, but some of her early recordings are worth listening to. This video shows clearly that she indeed knew how to sing, though her instrument was damaged.

  • Imperfect yet extraordinary. Her 'tame' attack is heartbreaking. Few singer bring you into their introspection the way La Ricciarelli does,

  • What does Bartoli's voice got to do with Ricciarellis voice... Two totally different ways to sing. And every singer is/has an unique instrument. Some prefer passion, other technique, and some "muthas" even have both! I mean it in positive way, but it's rare! Singers like Corelli had that amazing ability to perform the role emotionally and sing it purely. There's no much of "muthas" like that these days!

  • I think that all those portamento and the fact that she takes the notes from the bottom is not stilistically correct. I study with a singer of S. Cecilia and she correct me always when I do this things and a singer like her should not do that always like she does.

  • I agree with you sabry, it's not the correct way to sing portamento. But this seems to be a bit old video aswell, this is not the best Ricciarelli I've seen.

  • There is no comparison between this version and bartoli's,to begin with this is an operatic singer while the other is a record singer.

    If you want to hear the greatest version hear Caballe's.

  • Wow it was RAI (Italian National TV) auditorium... I sang Carl Orff "Carmina Burana" in there two years ago... lol

    Well actually I prefer Cecilia Bartoli's performance, even if Katia Ricciarelli has been a real diva, too, but pay attention, she was: at her time... Today's way of singing respects some other parameters, musical "gusto" changes everyday, so... we can enjoy all of these performances thanks to god!! ^_^

  • AAAAAH what beautiful singing, love the versions of the "older" singers like Caballe, Gencer and Ricciarelli. Ok the purist it may not do, for me it certainly is preferred.

    Alem do que, Ricciarelli às vezes não chega, nos agudos, a frequenci correta. Tem uma voz aveludade e muito bonita mas falta paixão, falta dor, falta saudade.

  • Beautiful controlled rendition of this glorious aria by the great Ricciarelli. Beautifully poised and full of emotion. Unfortunately the recording is not of great quality however Katia still shines.
