the sprite design and movement in this game is great thats what does it for me i bought this game in box off the internet after i had played it at funcoland many years ago :D
Every time I played this game, I felt like the arcade beat-em-up portions were more carefree with lots of crazy moves, jumping back and forth, slicing and dicing enemies; whereas the fighting-game boss battle portions are meant to be slow paced and more tactical. Each boss you fight this way has his own pattern and unique way you have to fight him, and if you can't figure him out and block and attack at the right time, it can be very tough. It's far more tactical than, say, Mortal Kombat.
although this being a game based on a comic , no fault in that Lies in the game dirrectors , Deffently Looks like a definite worth while Game to pick up if the opertunity arrises for my genesiss , SEGA!

this game reminds me more of the power ranger type, and the side scrolling beat them up is just like TMNT on NES. Maybe the word mutant on the title of this game may just be an homage to TMNT. I think it should have reviewed better than it did here though since, no offense, the reviewer really sucks at the game. When I play it I kick ass at the boss battles. Also I know how to block so it's way easier.
Anyways, I'm just glad someone took the time to review this game since it doesn't seem like many people know about it.
Omg i love this show. Even tho im 14 i have the second have of the series on box set tryin to find the first. I dont kno why but i just really dig it. Go negai rules!!
Looks like the game was based on the short story where futuristic Mazinga gets sucked into another dark middle aged world where people are the robots size, in this game, he's goes back to the same world but in their future?
The animations in the 2.5D parts look pretty awesome. Its decently fast and smooth too. For a game released in 93 it looks a little primitive for the genesis. Almost a bit nes like. The giant leg and semi boss looking enemies look great though. The 2D fighting obviously has more character detail and seems to look and play a little like Cosmic Carnage on 32x which is neither here nor there. The style and enemy variation as mark said are pretty cool too but the main character vanishes. strange
i remember owning this game for sega mega drive when i was in 2nd grade. In my oppinion the boss battles were difficult and can be frustrating. I ended up selected this game over Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(TMNT). I heard you comment on a want for a Trantor Z video game, Well you are looking at it (kinda), Trantor Z was actually footage from the Mazinger Z series re dubbed.
The story is kinda simple. Mazinger Z is "The Armor of God", and Kouji Kabuto wears this armor his grandfather made to fight the God Kaiser Hell, or Dr. Hell as mostly known for the Mazinger fans. My "OMFG"-list, which isn't always gameplay, but takes into account design and music:
Streets of Rage 2&3, Adventures of Batman & Robin, Thunder Force 4, Sonic 2 / Knuckles, Earthworm Jim, Rvg of Shinobi & successor, CONTRA Hard Corps (So awesome, best Contra) ... I'm losing my breath already ;)

Actually this game was based on a manga by Mazinger Z creator Go Nagai did called Mazin Saga, which was a what if alternate universe type of story, the story begins in the year 1999 AD, when God Kaiser Hell began an all-out invasion to control Earth using powerful giants known as 'Bio Beasts'. Mazinger Z in Mazin Saga is actually a suit of armor rather than a robot. This armor has the ability to transform into a giant version of itself, allowing Mazinger Z to battle the Bio Beasts.
The characters from the original Mazinger Z series reprise their roles in Mazin Saga, albeit slightly different from their anime/manga counterparts. Dr. Hell appears in Mazin Saga as God Kaiser Hell. Koji Kabuto still plays the protagonist, but has as darker, more serious persona than featured in the anime and manga versions of Mazinger Z (which is understandably so, given the setting and mood of Mazin Saga being close to another of Go Nagai's works, Devilman).
It's not mazinkaiser, Mazinsaga is an alternate universe retelling of Mazinger Z. In it, Mazinger is a suit of demon armor or something instead of a giant robot.
@zidaneff actually no, its not Mazinger Z, nor MazinKaiser, not even Getter Robo ( WTF ), its of a manga that Go (Kiyoshi) Nagai made called " MazinSaga " its like a combination of bot Mazinger Z and Devil-Man , and yes i'm a Super Robot Fan, not for nothing I like playing the SRW games
This game looks interesting. I should try this sometime. They don't make these kind of fighting games anymore. It could be a gool game if someone would make 2D-fighting game using full power of the newgengameconsole.
Oh I don't no when is this show's birthday but what the heck...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR 10 YEARS OLD CLASSIC GAME ROOM!!! :D
@Rakiarmas you should play guilty gear XX #reload. it's for ps2 and its a 2d fighter. or odin sphere for ps2. they both use ps2's graphics to the fullest in 2d.

This really reminds me of the Golden Axe games, especially in the way in which your enemies flinch and also the throws. It's like they stole the game-engine and just added a few more things.
Man another Genesis game I'm just not familiar with.
How about some General Chaos, Dashin' Desperados or Quack Shot? Just trying to think of some games I've played that don't seem to get their due time very often.
Love the reviews though, I look forward to watching them all the time.
A good review of a bad game. I had this game and it totally lost all appeal with me after a few hours of gameplay. I agree there is something there to keep you playing but it lacks charm. Streets of rage own this piece of shit game. Pleaase review more survival horror games..
I've never played this game, but probably the character was just flickering (like to indicate temporary invincibility). When that happens it can mess up a video recording.
MMMKAY ass jacker in case you hadn't noticed recently the new reviews give the option to watch them in high definition. This review, however, does not.
I'm Sorry, but kind of like the idea of starting it off as a beat'em up then turns into a fighter. It shows creativity and something original compare to most games. The only problem that I see is the controls that was mention.
for 1993 this game is pretty dam impressive!! though if it was made in japan im not suprise cus they were probaly already on to the creation on the ps or ps2 who knows because japan alot ahaed of us in the manga and video game world. or any technology tats in america today.
CGRHD has the most reviews of all time. Pretty soon there will be an encyclopedia of every game, and there will be a link that says, "Classic Game Room HD Review". Because man.. you do everything
Yeah that one on one fighting did look really quite terrible. But on the other hand the side scrolling adventure beat 'em up did look really fun. Either way that was a great review.
you must ahve a lot of games! please make a video of all your games consoles that you have..how much have you spent on it...I will watch that once or two!
I actually bought this back when it came out. It was called "Mazin Wars" here in europe. And back then you had the posibility to go to any store that sold games and test it. Well I liked what I saw after a few minutes so I bought it. At home I played to the first boss and that was like a slap in the face. I never beat the game to this day, but I will always remember it.
I haven't popped that sucker in for a while, But the animation still looks darn good.
lol i call this beat em up games 'final fight games' not 'streets of rage games'....and this game looks like a master system game, like some other genesis early games
I could just be crazy, but I actually enjoyed the music in this game.
I loved this game during my childhood, but I'll admit, the fighting game engine is broken as all hell. It's completely unfair that you don't have any special attacks, not to mention it is awkward as all hell that A is your block button instead of just holding back.

@zidaneff Except this was made in 1993 and Mazinkaiser didn't exist yet. It was based on a Go Nagai manga of the same name.
Geshpenst 1 year ago
@zidaneff
It's not mazinkaiser, Mazinsaga is an alternate universe retelling of Mazinger Z. In it, Mazinger is a suit of demon armor or something instead of a giant robot.
Testament5 1 year ago

Quack Shot

This really reminds me of the Golden Axe games, especially in the way in which your enemies flinch and also the throws. It's like they stole the game-engine and just added a few more things.
JBHutto 3 years ago
Man another Genesis game I'm just not familiar with.
How about some General Chaos, Dashin' Desperados or Quack Shot? Just trying to think of some games I've played that don't seem to get their due time very often.
Love the reviews though, I look forward to watching them all the time.

I owned Quack Shot when I was a kid. That was one fun game.
Rakiarmas 3 years ago
Yeah talk about a under appreciated gem :D Quack Shot was such a good game and it really put you in the World of Donald Duck and his adventures.

Do you compose your "Classic Game Room Stock Music"?
TenguGuy 3 years ago
Some of it, but most of it is from a massive stock music library that we own. -CGRHD

Is 0:02 by you? Because I look forward to that music every time I watch a CGR. I love that tune =D

A good review of a bad game. I had this game and it totally lost all appeal with me after a few hours of gameplay. I agree there is something there to keep you playing but it lacks charm. Streets of rage own this piece of shit game. Pleaase review more survival horror games..

whats the deal with the guy dissaperaing for a few seconds and then reappearing. is that supposed to happen or is it a bad graphic.
fahadqureshi 3 years ago
I've never played this game, but probably the character was just flickering (like to indicate temporary invincibility). When that happens it can mess up a video recording.
I bet it's hell with Atari 2600 videos.

Game looks all right. What really threw me off is how smooth the sprites are.

The animation in this game looks amazing.

Yeah that one on one fighting did look really quite terrible. But on the other hand the side scrolling adventure beat 'em up did look really fun. Either way that was a great review.

Thanks for reviewing ^^

lol i call this beat em up games 'final fight games' not 'streets of rage games'....and this game looks like a master system game, like some other genesis early games
ultrakupra 3 years ago
I could just be crazy, but I actually enjoyed the music in this game.
I loved this game during my childhood, but I'll admit, the fighting game engine is broken as all hell. It's completely unfair that you don't have any special attacks, not to mention it is awkward as all hell that A is your block button instead of just holding back.
