you cannot really just light them on the ground, they need to be "thrown" through the air similar to as they would be dispersed from a burst charge... they are called "Tiger TAILS" - how would one observe the "TAIL" if you just lit them on the ground? - might just as well ignite a pile of green meal?
@lodcomm ok thanx :) but how you launch them than if you got a star gun? put the star in the tube an connect it with a fuse? so i can just buy like 1 morter and put it in the ground ? :) because i've seen other vids of stars( not tiger tails) where they light them with a fuse on the ground...
There is a fuse hole at the bottom of each tube.. Place a piece of fuse in the hole, pour a small amount of black power into the tube to act as a lift charge. Drop 3-4 stars on top of the black powder, and then "lightly" tamp in a wad of crumbled tissue paper. Light the fuse and stand back to observe. For colored stars (not producing any tail/streamers) one can simply light them on the ground and observe from a distance.
Hi Setas - I did use a star roller to make them - I just uploaded a Vid of the process, you can see it at: watch?v=49lt8LA3_zI
You generally never need to prime tiger tail, as they light quite readily - My rolled tiger tails (most people cut them!) are quite raspberried, and the irregular surface actually aids in ignition IMO.
Do you ever have trouble getting your T.T stars to harden properly.I roll mine but no matter how I dry them, they never go really hard.I can crush them between my fingers even after theyve been drying for 2 months.I use the standard t.t formula with 6% dextrin.
How to you make a tigertail go up with a mortar creating a tail instead of igniting with the rest of the stars? Think you for your help, I am just getting into pyro.
@busspuppy You can make more cylindrical stars and attatch them to the outside of the mortar pay load (shell)so that they are ignited by the lift charge. You may want to experiment with different ways of attatchment, mine usually fall off in the air.
@lyrison Thanks for the reply. I have learned a bit since then. I am not doing much building right now, but I am still studying. I read a good way to do it lyrison so they wont fall off is to attach it to the top, then you tape around it so only the top is exposed. That way it will only burn from the top and not the bottom causing it to fall off. I have not tried making a tail yet so I will try making a cylindrical star dto do it.
@busspuppy I have to attatch my stars to the bottom because either the mortar ignites through the bottom, or my fuses burn so slow, that the star is done burning before the shell leaves the tube. But it is better to attatch them on top of the shell like you said
@lyrison If you prime it really good the burst charge should ignite it. You really dont need to use fuse to light the commett. Also I would recomend you make black match and roll it in kraft paper to make crude quickmatch. There are numerous resources out there to learn how to do that. I won't explain it here because there is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Sorry for the late reply just got out of class.
@busspuppy I'll try that. I should be getting media for my ball mill by Monday. Oh! I almost forgot. I made an aerial shell 2 days ago that weighed ~95.7g. To get it off the ground, we had to use 9.6g of 4F black powder (it was the only kind I had) in a 1.5 inch mortar tube. The tube was also sitting in a 2 inch PVC tube with an end cap on it. The shell worked great, but the next day I found out that the tube had exploded, and so did the PVC cap. One piece of the cap was 72'4" away!
Tiger tail is great stuff. Easy to make, relatively safe to work with, you almost *always* have the ingredients on hand.. and for such a simple formula, they look great in shells, comets & mines.
hy, do you really need a star gun? can't you just light them up on the ground?

did you use a star roller?
do you have to prime them?

How do you roll such nice stars? Mine turn out various sizes and shapes :( What are you using for cores

@linutas it fully states #7 lead shot in the vid, keep up man.

Nice idea with the "test gun" ;) But two questions:
1. Do you ignite the star easily from the top, so it ignites the lift?
2. What do you use as lift powder - my granulated BP works best with 20% of the weight of the shell, so something between your first and second test.

@lyrison Go ahead. Why where you using PVC at all that is a no no just for that reason.
busspuppy 6 months ago
@busspuppy The PVC was just to hold the cardboard tube that the shell was in. The cardboard should have held, but it didn't.

@joey5731
To wet the composition I used plain water and denatured alcohol ( about 3:1) - and I did use grams, but you can use any weight unit you want..

when you say 1/10. Are you saying you took the total weight of stars and divided it by 10 and thats the amount of lift?
