@michaeltaby Im am a captain-commander of the Swedish Airforce try my saab aj-37 viggen, there's no way an F-16 can match a nuclear attack aircraft with 50 megaton hydrogen-bomb at it's belly!!!
Volvo Aero a subsidiary of Volvo and they have made engines to nearly all Swedish military aircrafts since the 1950s. And the engine in the Viggen is no exception.
Volvo redesign American engines so they pass the Swedish specs for single engine planes so they can take bird collisions and other problems without blow out or explode.
Viggen was not really cut for dog fight. But I know an incident where a captain in swedish air force let a russian mig take tail over baltic sea. With afterburner on he dived straight down with the mig in tail and just above the surface pulled up with the result of the mig going straight in the "pool". SPLOSH.
Viggen was more lowflight, surprice, you´re dead, type of airplane.
cause we were neutral we game norwegian partisans a haven in sweden were they could plan their missions against the germans, and btw 8500 voluenteers from sweden went to finland and fought the soviet who invaded their country, we even send a fleet
Hmm both yes and no, i'll correct you and fill you in. No we didn't send a fleet to Finlands aid. But we gave Finland food, vehicles, weapon worth more than the whole Finnish budget for a year. After the Winter war we also co-founded,70%, the Salpa defense line.
We also trained a norweigan division, 10k men, who after the German surrender returned and took control over Norway.
Can you please cut the crap about Carl XII or whatever his name is....This is (was) a great aircraft, but the Swedes aren't cut out to fight. For what we know you have bailed out of every important battle/conflict in the 20th century! Nothing goes to prove that your so called pilots can stand up to the pressure. Your weapons industry (Boforg?) is decent but what's happened to your country and the budget in the past decade leaves a lot to be questioned whether you are able to fight or not.
if you are reffering to the ww2 we did`nt have much of an army to fight with, if we started war with germany we would have getting our asses kicked in matter of days, and they would have walked thru our country anyways, and cause we were neutral we did more good then if we started a war with the germans, and can you blame us for not being invaded???
The guy says that Sweden WAS a warrior nation before we turned into peacelovers! Read, understand, reply! No Swedes aren't cut to fight, but who are? The old Spartans maybe. And we've not bailed out in every important conflict, what is an important conflict? Important from an American point of view or a Swedish? And for a small country like Sweden it's often best to stay out of conflicts unless you're forced to act, we've never been forced!
And don't try discuss Sweden and how Sweden have acted through history from your American way of seeing things. First when you understand Sweden you can be taken serious. Sweden does what is best for Sweden, sometimes it is best to be a chicken.
And peacetime excersises (with USAF for example) show that Swedish pilots are among the best! Luckily they don't have to use their skills in a sharp situation.
Let's not get into this discussion of how The Swedes bowed for the Germans request of transient traffic of division Englebrecht from Norway to Finland. Your neighbours aren't particulary happy with you for that, still to this day. Sometimes it pays to be a chicken, but sometimes you have to stand up to what you believe in. I am pretty well versed in Sweden, its history and geopolitics. So I don't think that's an issue here.
My grandfather served at the time during ww2 in the Swedish army, you maybe can understand that my family and I are glad that the German not invaded. If they had invaded, I and many other Swedes had absolute not live today, because I can promise you that our solider had made heavy resistance against the superior enemy, much blood and suffering.
I agree that it was wrong to export iron to the German, and to let the Nazis us our railways to send Norwegians to concentration camps, it was wrong. But please don't blame my generation for those mistakes
The Swedish word for when Germany was allowed to use the Swedish railway is "Permitenttrafiken". It means that only German soldiers on their way home for a leave were allowed to use the Swedish railway. NO Norwegian Jews on their way to concentration camps traveled on Swedish rails, end of discussion!
I believe the US Navy have been hunting a Swedish submarine for well over a year.. as an exercise.. and have requested more time, as they haven't yet found it.. I think that sums it up rather nicely! :)
Most Americans have a high opinion of Sweden. You guys have great military, and I hope our two nations can be friends. We may be bigger, but that doesn't make us better, and we're not always right. Don't let the comments of a few, tarnish your view of the rest of us.
The original music for this vid is "The show must go on", with a band called Ghost. The band is made up of fighter pilots and staff from F10 Ängelholm, which had the ghost as their squadron symbol. Thankfully they fly better than they play/sing.
The MiG crash occured 7th of July in 1985 outside Swedish island Gotland. Two Swedish SH37 Viggen recon fighters from F13 Fighter Wing were on a mission to take photos of a large Russian naval exercise when two Russian Su-15s joined them. The Su-15s came up behind the swedish fighters and one of the SH37s Viggen pilots noticed a radar lock. The two Swedish pilots immeidately made a dive to the lowest altitude. One of the Su-15s tried to follow but could not handle it and crashed.
A story I heard from a former Viggen fighter pilot was that sometime in the 80:s a Viggen took off from an airbase in the south of Sweden to try and intercept a Blackbird flying back to UK after a recon mission over the Baltic Sea. The Viggen climbed as high and fast as possible and managed to get a lock on the Blackbird. One week later a postcard from Lakenheath airbase in UK dropped in at the swedish airbase con gratulating them. :) Cold War fun stuff!
I've heard both your stories. Viggen was the first non-american fighter to lock target on a Blackbird. The Blackbird went the same route every day always the same time so after a while the Air Force used to send up two Viggen and wait for the Blackbird in the air in Kalmar strait. There were many cat and mouse games during the Cold war.
Hi, I too remember something about a MIG chasing a Viggen over the Baltic Sea and that the MIG crashed when trying to pull up near sea level. I was young then, during the years I thought it was something I dreamt. Wasnt it on the news sometime in the 80:s?
Have you heard the story when a Mig was chasing one over Baltic sea? Anyway, the Viggen did a 90 down towards the sea and the Mig followed. Close to the surface the Viggen leveled out but the Mig crashed in to the sea. LoL. Go Sweden go !
But why this crappy Mallorca-Alcoholics music? There are so many great bands from sweden.. For example Covenant for good electro. The Viggen is a beauty, the video great! Jättebra!

@michaeltaby This aircraft is the only plane who ever locked a SR71- Blackbird.
And that happend not just once. Viggen was an awsume aircraft who was very stable at low altitude in high speed!

@kenth0120
