  • I find, at least for myself, that simply leaving questions of whether God truly exists or whether the fabric of existence is this way or that, withOUT a definitive, final answer, is the best approach. Because really... human civilization*, science and our collective empirical knowledge is still very much at it's infancy.

*civilization implies civilized behavior, which I wouldn't say that human society really, entirely possesses as of yet :P

  • I'm sorry but the type of religion you're describing strikes me as being the second religiosity that Spengler described coming at the end of civilizational cycles. We don't need spiritual authority, we can decide for ourselves; we don't need to claim to have a complete understanding of the truth; all that matters is that we get a spiritual high once in a while that allows us to go about our materialistic lives. Sorry, but that's not genuine spirituality, which requires submission.

  • This probably isn't your fault, but the place you're speaking is acoustic fail-world. I can barely hear you over your echo.

Also, the Bible *is* all wrong. Morally, factually, and in its epistemology.

  • sorry but this makes no sense dude.

  • its gr8 that ur open to evolution and science, but how are u a philosophy professor and a religious person at the same time? anyways, by the way, did u know that the bible is just a collection of bundles of written stuff that has been plagiarized, translated and edited over an extended period of time? and it wasnt even a book until around 4th C (read about canonization). also, there's no way of proving that it was written by a 'divine supernatural' being or even associated to a 'god'.. etc etc

  • If you think you're missing something because you can't hear it, you're not.

  • I'm pretty sure the whole thing you said was a Kierkegaard quote from a speech he gave 200 years ago :P

  • What little I could make out from this terrible audio sounded like a rather pathetically argued defence of mysticism. Please don't spam me with friend invitations.

  • evolution. how can it be possible? monkeys dont turn into men these days. ive been told that it actually takes like a million yrs for a monkey to turn to human. wtf? that actually helps my side even more. for a million yrs monkeys have remained the way they are. darwin's a dumbass... (when i said monkey i meant any animal in general evolving into something else.)

  • @xijjjjjix lol - study up a bit as your understanding of evolution seems a little limited.

humans DIDN'T come from monkeys that we see today - and nobody ever states the idea that we do EXCEPT for creationists with large gaps in their understanding of the theory of evolution.

  • @andthereisntone i used the term monkeys, but i did include the fact that i mean anything in general. u may hav skipped over that.

altho i will admit, my knowledge in this is limited. im still in my teens, havent even had college education yet.

  • @xijjjjjix ok, fair enough, but....

'for a million yrs monkeys have remained the way they are.'

...i'll pm you a short link about this you *may* be interested in

  • @andthereisntone here let me just admit i dont kno enough to argue about this. lets just drop we're not gonna go anywhere.

  • @xijjjjjix it's all about study/learning ...if you aren't interested in that then it's certainly hard to understand stuff.

  • @ Geeks,,My policy is to ignore and run far away from all atheists, as well as agnostics...america is 60% atheist, 39% agnostic, leaving 1% with a life in relationship (healthy) with God.

Odds now are stacked against atheists and agnostics to survive this century,,as the world situation grows more critical by THE DAY,,back in the 60;s -90's situations were *controlable*, presently we see Revelation unfolding right before our eyes. The OT prophets words are becomming realization.

  • in my opinion there is only 1 modern day philosoper, Friedrich Nietzsche, never understood, although Jung comes very close in his 2 part 10 yr study on Niethzsche,,I have both vols.

Reading Horace Bushnell, Jung at the moment,, prophets sent from God,,yet strange I find Jung's religious writings to be shallow, in contrast to his monumental writings of the individual soul *psyche*.

Horace Bushnell, america's greatest theologian (study on God;s relationship with man) yet to be discovered,

  • as a fellow (future) philosopher I appreciate your effort to bridge the gap between religion and science, but people take philosophy as a failed cause this day, since the humanism project failed...

  • i understand what you may be trying to accomplish,,you are wasting your time,,the mainstream protestant cult is deeply connected with this antichrist system, has no eyes to see how to disengage herself.

but the arches look catholic,,*the great whore* in Revelation..

You are among the wrong group of people.Read Luke 9:60

Seek only those who know(gnosis) and love God.

These are the end times of which John wrote in Revelation.

  • Science and Religion are manifestly separate, always. I believe that as the US separate church and state, so should the religious separate religion and science. Unless your religion calls for embracement of science, which is different (ex catholic talking here). Also, I'm agnostic, so no atheist haters please.

  • Twisting and turning till everything's returning to the way I need it to be.

  • The bible makes explicit claims about the origin of people, earth and the rest of the cosmos that we now know are false. I don't buy the non-overlapping magisteria argument. People have modified their behaviour to fit into the modern context because we realise it is wrong to slay people who work on the Sabbath and we know that humans evolved from other species. It's great that you've accepted these facts, finally, but we're still not buying your fairy story .

  • @versanil I like how there are so many militantly forceful agnostics/atheists who aren't content to just not believe. They can't just leave it alone. You couldn't have just skipped over this video. You had to leave a rude comment because, dammit, somebody else couldn't possibly be thinking about and enjoying something that YOU don't believe in. The oppressed has become the oppressor, eh?

  • @GeekIsTheNewCool

Please explain what is rude or oppressive about my comment. My understanding is that the comments section is where the discussion takes place. Maybe you have a different understanding. Shouldn't we be discussing this stuff? And FYI I didn't just blunder in here unannounced, I received a friend request from uploader, nycphilosophy. Nice ad hominem attack, by the way, why don't you address the points instead?

  • @versanil I apologize. I didn't know about your invite. I guess I shouldn't have assumed you weren't invited.

It just seems to be the forcefully-secular movement's M.O. to just talk down their nose at ANYONE who has spiritual beliefs and faith. the whole swaggering, "look at me, i have all the answers and can so EASILY prove everything you believe to be wrong" type of attitude. if you really want to sway believers, remember that you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar.

  • @GeekIsTheNewCool

That's quite alright, I recognise your portrayal of the 'militant atheist'. However, I don't see a problem with challenging other peoples ideas. From the non believers point of view the Biblical account of life does seem quite obviously man made. What else are we going to say? I don't take offence if somebody wants to criticise my naturalistic explanation.

I know one thing - it is very difficult to change peoples beliefs, no matter how much honey you got.

  • @versanil fair enough. :)

  • the church needs to constantly update customs

  • The question of 'abominations' in the Bible has always challenged me, but as I have not the slightest prejudice in me against anyone I have to conclude that this question is not one for us as a people but is a conversation between God and the individual alone. It should not be for society to step in and judge others on behalf of God. He can do that by Himself, I think. Our job is to live and let live, for who among us can cast the first stone?

  • I agree with you. The Bible is not a science book. And science makes no claim on the supernatural or God (how could it?). To talk about these two things as if they are in conflict is be on a ship passing another ship in the night.

  • The Bible does not JUST "express God's love for us", it also has a lot to say about who he is and what he has been doing in the world. Either you let the Bible tell you these things or you create a god of your own design after your own image. The creation narrative is tied inextricably to Paul's doctrine of justification in Romans chapter 5. If Adam wasn't the first man, then the whole doctrine falls apart. And the Bible teaches that Adam was created 6000 years ago, on day 6 of the universe.

  • @Draxis666 be polite when you talk about this sort of thing, dont step on people's toes. There are no wrong answers, or absolutes.
