I am getting a good tone on my soprano now - but people tell me to put more mouthpiece in - when I do I find it harder to control the sound - I aim for a kind of Desmond/Konitz sound which I find easier with a very small amount of mouthpiece - do you think I am storing up trouble for future? I only ask because it looks like you don't take much in. Great sound by the way - inspiring/encouraging! Thanks
Hi, I really like your video. Tanks a lot for it! I can't understand why people click on dislike or write derogatory comments instead of just going to the next video. Once again, thank you very much!
i love your tone on the soprano..i dont like the aebersold backing that much even tho its the only one i have myself..gay mcintire (bad spelling) has a really nice verion on cd
@icespartan1171 yes :) alto is tuned down 1 and a half steps from concert pitch (ex. Concert C -piano guitar ect- is an Alto's A -and baritone sax) and a soprano is tuned up a whole step from a concert pitch (Concert C is a Soprano D - and tenor or bass sax) , but all saxes have the same fingerings! :)
Let the haters do their job, that's what do..they hate what they can't have and what they can't do..I just added you in my favorites..plz don't stop posting your music!!
dude your a boss and i love all your videos, your a great player to look up to in many aspects of playing so dont let the haters hate! theyre jealous haha...thanks for the amazing videos :D
I agree with Alphamale69, I also like your style very much, and not much to criticize about. The smooth, jazzy feeling without the feeling that you are forcing yourself to play=really good. Play your songs please!
Nice sound, with a spare style that flows over the changes pretty well. You lose me at the "Fly me to the moon" reference, it becomes too predictable at that point. But I do really enjoy this.
You do come off just a little arrogant in your notes for the video. You had to use a bus?! Uh, that's audio engineering 101. Anyway, might be the reason you got some negative comments, just saying.
I really like this clip. Usually I hate the soprano saxophone as they usually sounds like you are about to kill a cat. But this is differet - very differet. Very talented.

I am a soprano sax player, and i can truly appreciate this style, i wish i had someone to work with me it would make me a much better horn player. thanks
Just a great tune played by an excellent musician, the colors from your horn are wonderful. the laid back timing is perfect . What rig are u using ? sounds like a selma 6. has a Desmond sound to me he was one of the greatest. U are right there
Brilliant tone from the soprano, a lovely smooth laid back kind of late night jazz feel which I personally much rather listening to than some jazz. I hope you get many gigs where ever you may be in the world and if you don't then best of luck because you deserve good gigs.
i just listened to kenny g which was a bad choice then i found this, honestly in my opinion you have a much nicer tone than kenny g's, and i was able to listen to the end :D
Is your sax in Bb or in C? I'm learning to play some months ago and I think I'm getting your tone acoording to what my girlfriend (she guides me through this, the sax is hers), and I really liked your version, very beautiful indeed. I'd like to ask if you were so kind to share the music sheet to learn it myself, I haven't got a credit card to buy online =(.
hello man i ear all videos of you,im saxophonist and i say you have a bigest smooth sound in all saxophones ,you have better sound, better techniques and better improvi imagination.thx for post this videos.bye nye and sorry for me english good luck
Hey that was lovely playing dude :) i have played alto for like 8 years and i decided to get a soprano how are you getting the higher register sounds silky smooth . Any tips would be amazin and thanks :) jamie
I love your tone on soprano, I think it's your most suited of the two! It's so hard to get a good sound on sop, you definately have something, very inspiring! I'm learning tenor but would love a sop but they are so expensive for one with good intonation. More videos please!
You've got a beautiful, sultry tone - I really like it. I play mostly bari, sometimes alto and tenor, but lately I've played a lot more on the sop (saxello). What mpc/reed combo are you using?
You sound great! I love your style and phrasing. Soprano is the horn I am most comfortable on, the tenor I am hot and cold with. Don't listen to the haters, you are awesome, just keep doing your thing bro.
Wow! This is really amazing! I think you're the reason I want to switch to soprano sax. Can you recommend any good brands? And mouthpieces-- the ones that give you a darker, warmer and fatter sound. THANKS! :)
From one sax player to another that song was beautiful. the licks and changes were excellent. Could I ask you what type of sax and mouthpiece that you play with? I am looking for the best value for a new alto and soprano.
It make me smile to hear your play. The sax really talks to you.Thank you so much for sharing your talent. If you ever tour the east coast let me me know and I will be there.
matt, you are one of the straightest, likable, and talented people I've know (despite never having met) why on earth do you let idiots get to you like that. you put those posts back up please!
Beautiful! I only started playing Alto about a year ago, and I'm hoping to start soprano, this is an inspiration to work even harder :) I love the tone it's so smooth!
Dude, you play beautifully. If the ignorance continues, just disable comments. At least that way we can still enjoy your gifts.
I'm a saxophone beginner and I have a soprano. Any advice on a good beginner mpc that will enable me to get nice even tone and minimize the squeaks or is it just purely my rookie embrochure? thanks for any advice offered!
Firstly, you have a beautiful tone. It's not too syrupy and over the top, like so many of the commercial soprano saxophonists today.
Secondly, I loved your restraint. The way that you didn't overplay the piece and fill it up with too many notes to show off. It made the notes that you did play even more poignant.
Truly inspirational. It is difficult to sound like this on a soprano. Its a pity that people slam a video like this without thinking. Nevertheless, cheers!
I found it quite difficult not to respond myself to the obviously malicious remarks you've had to suffer as it would have triggered the idiots even further BUT YOU TRULY ARE A GREAT INSPIRATION for many of us enjoying the benefits of the hard and soulful work you are putting into these pieces. I am 35 and have just bought a tenor but even as a teen I was listening to jazz masterpieces smuggled to Hungary :) We shall remain your humble fans appreciating your efforts! Happy 2010!
I enjoy your style of playing - smooth, laid back not forced, etc. I read a lot of comments from "critics" and have come to the conclusion that many of them are merely trying to impress others with their knowledge (or lack thereof) of music. You do right to delete them. Keep playing!
truly amazing, I usualy play alto, but have recently purchased a soprano and the tuning is very difficult to get correct, youtube sould make a 6th star just for this video, you have truly amazed me, i dont see how anyone can critisize your videos they are very good.
matt sod the knockers your talented id jam wid you anytime ,,ppl these CRITICS should put up thier vids so we can see them play matt you always make me smile old school is the best school and always 5 stars from brum
Hey, I have to say that both my room mate and I LOVE to watch this video. I was actually surprised to read your comment today about negative responses. That's rediculous! You are very talented and you inspire me. Moreover, if people knew the dedication and time spent on learning any instrument then they would appreciate you as a gift from the heavens. take care. Tito the tunnel musician.
beautiful tone - seriously. such a pleasant respite from the way sopranos are used in a lot of recent music. speed isn't necessarily the goal is it? Sure, I can appreciate a sweet run but this style here (all respects to Coltrane) is more like being accompanied for a stroll in the park than being stuck in the mass transit station.
@crazydaisydoo Great sound . I purchased a 8* otto link HR and a BG ligature with # 5 Reeds wow what a sound . Fat round plenty of punch and beautifully dark. The colours are just tremendous. Thanks to you I have that burning desire to play. I have been playing 40 plus years and feel like I did when on my first gigs at 10 years old . wanting more and more GOD Bless you You cook great stuff roll on mate
Im a member of SOTW and I would say forget all the people with that hate mail its just cos they cant play or they want to play as good as you and cant. Just keep blowing my friend. By the way whats your set up ?
Iv'e got to say that if I could play like you I would be overjoyed. This world is full of self appointed experts, and critics who make themselves feel good by pulling others down. OK you say that your early videos are not perfect, the point is whatever is the case you are now brilliant, and a joy to listen to!!!
Keep blowing your sax, keep posting videos, and thank you for your inspiring music..
Wow, that was excellent Sir - I admire how you make it look so easy! I'm a long-time guitarist, mostly rock+blues and ballads, but have just started playing with a jazz/blues bunch, of trumpet, sax and double-bass. It's a real pleasure to feed off their music, and put something in. I hope you get out and get heard, your music should be. Please ignore the dead-head section of the online community, we're stuck with them, I fear.
sounds fantastic friend can i ask your set up and what you use for recording. mine souds so bad have a listen just type in romeo011 and listen to my last recording or two and please any advice would be great thanks Tom from peterborough uk
amazing sound! really nice tone. can i ask if you have a soprano player whose sound has influenced you most? (not necessarily that you've tried to copy their tone.. but i understand if you cant answer that.) Also how have you recorded this? thanks. really enjoyed the rendition!
This is amazing stuff. I also hate how people write hate comments. Most of them are from people who have no idea what on earth that they are talking about. This is really good. For this years FL all state jazz band improv audition we have to improvise two choruses of Autumn Leaves. Any words of wisdom? Thanks.
I totally agree. Because for the musically untalented, all they here is the legends like coltrain, miles, getz and so on. Then they compare them to players they see. Very annoying.
Its ashame that people use this as a forum to bash others. I wish you had not taken down the Blue Bossa tune. I appreciate the Tenor and guitar solo's. I play in a jazz quartet and often use your vid's as a guide as to how I want to solo. Keep up the great work...
Matthew, I read what you said about 'hate comments' and deleting your vids. It's best to ignore the idiots. They are always there no matter what! It's ashame that people are denied access to your great vids because of these idiots.
By the way... your interpretations of these great tunes are now a play list on my ipod. I can only wish to play so well... I keep coming back to them. Wishing I had figured out sooner how to pull them to my computer before the larger group went away.
Maybe they will come back??? What if we could get folks from a multinational listenership petition??? Ok you ge the point.
Depaak Chopra said "Accept people, situations, and events as the occur. Take responsibility for your situation and all the events seen as problems. Relinquish the need to defend your point of view."
Sorry to hear that 'The Kiddies' with no life have seen fit to sully that of others. Take a deep breath Mathew and focus on the pleasure you get from playing and always remember those of us out in the ethernet who have gained enormously from your efforts and advice. Kia Kaha from New Zealand. Be strong, have strength.
Thanks YaniT991, you know those people in a bar, the really opinionated and ignorant ones who ram their opinion down your throat? They really thrive on youtube, I get SO bored of receiving messages and comments from kids like "you should use a jazz mouthpiece, my teacher says you should use a metal one for jazz?" and c***p like that. Sometimes I am extremely rude in reply, I have given up being nice. I am now officially a grumpy old man....it's being 40 that does it.
Hi Matthew, sorry to hear you're having to remove older videos to stop idiotic comments. Your work has has been an inspiration to me over the last year or so and I'm pleased to hear you're still happy to post new (and improved!) improv's. Keep up the good work. PS love your sop work. Ian
Your recent expunging of so many great tunes, due to idiotic commenters - of which there is a seemingly endless supply on this site - has left my "CrazyDaisyDoo" p/l a little short (just 30 #'s).
It really is sad that folks can't just enjoy your superbly-played classic jazz tunes w/out either climbing up onto an 'instructional soapbox' or just 'being horrible for a hobby'.
I look forward to some new renditions of the deleted songs, as well as lots of BRAND-new takes on even MORE classics!
Hi again mathew I just wanted to say that I for one have learnt all sorts from you in the short time I have known about your videos eg the names of all those tunes I never new before and where to find a book with them in I had never heard of the real book before despite trolling the internet for hrs looking for books with tunes I fancied playing and buying books with only a couple tunes I liked in I have quite a few now and I found your advice very helpful so keep it up we novices need it JOHN
Hi John, thanks for these messages, much appreciated. I can strongly recommend the Real book and the Hal Leonard associated play-alongs (12 cds in total) It is about a £100 investment all in, but worth every penny.
Hi mathew I am a 60 yr old technopobe so this is going to take me a while doing chop stick typing I hope it doesnt bore you I have just found you by way of ebay and your sale it was a revelation when I pressed to hear your demo and this fabulous music started you are an inspiration especially if you have only been doing it for a couple of years I have been learning alto for 18 months now and am completely hooked I only hope to be half as good as you. you must do a cd the world is awaiting you
I am getting a good tone on my soprano now - but people tell me to put more mouthpiece in - when I do I find it harder to control the sound - I aim for a kind of Desmond/Konitz sound which I find easier with a very small amount of mouthpiece - do you think I am storing up trouble for future? I enjoy your style of playing - smooth, laid back not forced, etc. I read a lot of comments from "critics" and have come to the conclusion that many of them are merely trying to impress others with their knowledge (or lack thereof) of music. You do right to delete them. Keep playing!

Hey, I have to say that both my room mate and I LOVE to watch this video. I was actually surprised to read your comment today about negative responses. That's rediculous! You are very talented and you inspire me. Moreover, if people knew the dedication and time spent on learning any instrument then they would appreciate you as a gift from the heavens. take care. beautiful tone - seriously. such a pleasant respite from the way sopranos are used in a lot of recent music. speed isn't necessarily the goal is it? Sure, I can appreciate a sweet run but this style here (all respects to Coltrane) is more like being accompanied for a stroll in the park than being stuck in the mass transit station.

You are a stunning player... have you made any CD's for sale yet? I often log onto youtube, just to listen to you play while I e-mail, etc.

I'm really impressed by your playing. You make a really nice tuneful sound and have great control over the upper register.
Don't let what anybody says stop you

I like this too. Anybody impolite criticisms is just from idiots. Ignore it . I love your sound

Please ignore the dead-head section of the online community, we're stuck with them, I fear.

i am planning to get this but some articles say something about the upper register being hard to articulate. is this a concern?

sounds great but you should try to find someone to play with as background rather than a computer

I love Soprano sax most of all.
He has sweetest sound, doesn´t cut so much like alto, and has not so much heavy lows as tenor.

Keep up the great work...
coolsax64 2 years ago
Blue bossa has just been redone.... no guitar this time and a lot faster.... thanks for the very kind words
crazydaisydoo 2 years ago
Matthew, I read what you said about 'hate comments' and deleting your vids. It's best to ignore the idiots. They are always there no matter what! It's ashame that people are denied access to your great vids because of these idiots.
Keep up the good work - you are an inspiration!

I am now officially a grumpy old man....it's being 40 that does it.
crazydaisydoo 2 years ago

Hi again mathew I just wanted to say that I for one have learnt all sorts from you in the short time I have known about your videos eg the names of all those tunes I never new before and where to find a book with them in I had never heard of the real book before despite trolling the internet for hrs looking for books with tunes I fancied playing and buying books with only a couple tunes I liked in I have quite a few now and I found your advice very helpful so keep it up we novices need it JOHN
gladsaxisme 2 years ago
Hi John, thanks for these messages, much appreciated. I can strongly recommend the Real book and the Hal Leonard associated play-alongs (12 cds in total) It is about a £100 investment all in, but worth every penny.
