I don't know. I think there was a pretty significant shift in W.'s behavior after the Democratic Congress took their seats. Of course, it was based largely in obstinance, but I don't think they were arguing against that point.

Sometimes you need to go right, sometimes you need to go left, you take the lane that best suits your need.

Well in my analogy it's not the center lane. It's the center dividing line. Where if you keep driving down the center, you're bound to get into a car accident sooner or later, or derail others into more dangerous situations.
That's why I worded it in that manner. In our "democratic republic" right now we only have 2 lanes. The closest thing you'd be driving to a center lane, are the emergency roads and side roads.

I agree. The legislature needs more parties than two "polar opposites" (as if). For example, Finland has some half-a-dozen parties in govt (usually two big parties in coalition with smaller parties in the group), and over a dozen in the parliament. The US needs a left party, a center party, and a right party. And maybe a few smaller parties focusing on specific issues.
E.g. Finland has

Well, here what Americans should do in my eye: Use a merge of the libertarian party with the whig party to replace the Republican party and enter a 3rd party on the left. So you will get the democrat in the center, some sort of social-democrat on the left and right-wing without nuts on the right... So the country would still be balanced to the right (it in DNA of USA), just without some too religious people. The debates would be more efficient, smarter,less crazy.
