Yeah,The flat head is what a lawn mower engine is modeled after. They still are the flathead design these days too. They are reliable too.YOu can run a mower for years, replace the ring(hone the cylinder) and run it another 2 years or so.
@rodman23t your comment shows that you are as retarted as the typical ricer owner is. You fail to see vintage for what it is. Let me set your sorry ass straight. The flathead V8 was designed in 1931 & remained little changed 'til it retired in 1954. When the Flathead was born, Chevy had the I6 "Cast Iron Wonder" with splash oiling - clear up to the mid 1950s. In it's day, A flathead pounded the living shit out of every mass produced engine from detroit. Don't compare 1934 to 1974 dumbass.
@rodman23t you should probably know the designer of this engine designed your small block Chevy engine later on, and based it off of this engine. Its also not good when your comparing your modern engine to one that was designed and made when your grandpa was kid.
Yes Sir the sound of that Flat Head V8 is like sweet music to these old ear's. Your HP output very impressive you have done Old Henry Ford very proud that baby running wide open man that sound's good. Lord have mercy. FORDROAD AUSTRALIA 5/5
The stock compression ratio is only 6.8:1 and the optimum is only around 8:1 for a flathead so 201 Horses naturally aspirated is pretty good, especially considering the shape of the combustion chamber in a flathead (side valve) engine.
@2URBO2 200hp for 239 cubic inches isn't that bad, very good for a 60+ year old engine. These engines made ~110hp stock; nearly doubling that without any forced induction at all is pretty impressive. Try making an S2000 make even 400hp without forced induction.
@seapeddler ...there is (or at least was) a company somewhere either in Illinois or Ind. that was / is building brand new V8 flat heads with 5 mains
and fully counter weighted cranks and harmonic balancers......I read an
article about them about 9 or 10 yrs ago.....in one of the rod mags....been too long ago now to remember the details.....sorry. I'm sure that if they're
Can a guy still get rebuild parts for the old flatty,s? How about the water pumps. That would be an important part(s).

great job building. looks good too. Don't sweat the moron comments. most of them don't know their connecting rods from their ball joints.

At what RPMs did it make the power peaks? Very nice :)

WHAT, only 200 hp????? :S
But then again, it will rund many miles when it has so little horses per cubic inches.

For how long can 3 main bearings sustain triple the stock horsepower figures?
Any way to make a flathead with 5 mains like a modern V-8?

Doubling the original horsepower of the engine without exotic fuel or supercharging is a good achievement! Kudos!! It sound great!!
JGMagoo 2 years ago 2
Doubling would only be another hundred horse power. not to hard to get.
wastedtubers 2 years ago
Agreed! And being naturally aspirated makes the output even more impressive.

Nice build, guys. Look old school until you notice the MSD distributor. Sounds wonderful.
