To get 2100 calories from vegetables you could eat 2 pounds of each of the following: broccoli, cauliflower, onion, potato, carrot and cucumber. That's twelve pounds of veggies in one day. Or...you could just eat 35 pounds of those delicious lettuce varieties. Fat and sugar is where most calories come from.
Hello my friend Thank you for your invitation, and my sincere congratulations on your magnificent idea to grow some vegetables this way, I think its an excellent idea, and also his way of taking advantage of all this empty lot, with all these magnificent plants thus giving a wonderful embellishment to all your space, I love farming, I appreciate this and give her magnificent idea! congratulations. @amusingisthedawn Great question. I'm worried about what is in the actual rain that falls from the sky. I'm not worried about the rain barrel water because I water the plants with a very small percentage of water coming from the rain barrels as I live in a rainy area anyway. I also don't have a roof with asbestos (pre-1980), herbicide/moss killer roof, or cedar shake roof with copper or arsenic. If you live in a dry climate and rely just on the roof you can do a slow sand filter or diverter
@MrEnergyCzar There are some great how-to videos on first-flush systems with filters (basically used for grey water systems mainly), but if you have an asphalt roof no matter how clean the water is from bird droppings/leaves/etc. it is water I wouldn't drink unless I ran it through a katadyne or berkey. That being said...I would be afraid it would mess with the PH of the soil as well as contaminate it...even if it is a small PPM of actual petroleum in it. Supplementing with it is not AS bad
are u really able to feed yourself with only the food u grow in that little garden... i mean don't get me wrong, u seem to have a larger lot than the average person, but r u really able to grow that much food?
This is a great series, I especially enjoyed the tour around your energy saving house, you are clearly well-read it would be good to hear your opinion on current topics via some vlogs perhaps - quicker than typing! ;-)
Your a smart man. People shake their heads at me when i tell them food will not always be so cheap. I hope i live long enough to see our planet exhaust its energy supply.. will be a great day.. ill have turrets and dogs protecting my gardens from the ignorant fools too dependent on societies easy ways.
You have done a lot of great videos and have excellent things to say and teach. However, this is working for everybody with a house...a big one I guess. I am in Bulgaria and live in an apartment building. Pretty much none of the stuff will work for me. Maybe I have to relocate, but in the meantime I am thinking and thinking and nothing comes to my mind in terms of a solution that is close to what you are teaching.
Great vids - Have you heard of A-biotic oil? It was a term they were throwing around concerning self-replenishing oil reserves that exist deeper than most wells. It is thought that the Deep Water Horizon was after such reserves. If it's true, it kinda deflates the whole Peak Oil rational doesn't it?
@SensiBleu I was into the Abiotic theory early on during my denial stage of grieving but couldn't find enough on it to make me believe it......those 20,000 abandoned wells in the gulf from 50 years ago kind of put that theory to rest for me....wish it were true though...
It doesn't negate your efforts though. There are many reasons to get off the grid aside from the looming energy crises and being able to feed ourselves is at the crux of this equation. You've done a lot to help your fellow man become aware and prepared. As the elitist criminals continue to ruin our home for personal gain it is important that you share your work and methods with the world. Thanks again!
@SensiBleu While some still desire to believe in abiotic oil, but much of science has moved past that after they figured out ho petroleum was created. BP was drilling to & into a formation that was know to be there before they commenced drilling. As always they can't know all the characteristics of formation until it's explored
I am inspired by your videos yet I was surprised by the plastic composter ...a wooden slated meter cubed is one of the most effective containers if one needs to contain compost ...compost can be done so many ways outside of using plastic ...just a thought : )
Great video! Its amazing to see how much food you are growing in such a limited amount of space. I'm sure the raised planters, rain barrels and composter will pay off in the near future, as these items may be difficult to obtain? Keep up the great work and good luck with your crop.
Great tips! The Garden is one of the last things that I need to do. Insulating the house, financial, food storage, source of fresh water, etc I have done.
i noticed the asparagus at 2:50 is bent down. did you tie it down? just curious why its like that

Do you have asphalt shingles? If so, are you worried about ruining the organic garden with water from the oil based shingles?

Couple of comments: Great work btw.
1) Have you given any thought to self defense?
2) Have you got yourself a extra large sized OIL tank? (Having OIL around will make things much easier, the stuff is very useful...)
3) Have you put together a stock of duck tape, wire, rope, etc. Things that may be difficult to find post collapse.
4) Have you started collecting seeds?
