Dry mode IS cooling mode. The only difference is that the compressor doesn't stop cooling the air. Whereas in cooling mode, the thermostat is active and turns off the compressor when the room reaches a set temperature. In Dry mode, the compressor never stops.
Thanks for the informative video! I've already been informed by *several* people where I will be living in Japan that it's already hot as all heck and just keeps climbing, so I was excited to see that it is possible to find and install a decently priced AC (compared to the wall units) fairly easily.
ok, so i live in arizona, had i wish i had the ability to purchase once of these units instead of the ones at homedepot. these look at alot better are what im looking for
Air conditioning is part of the terminology we use - HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). The ultimate goal of HVAC is to provide comfort to our daily life.
hmm why was that thing so expensive? i bought a proper split style air conditioner with a huge-ass outdoor unit for my room for about 300 euros last summer...
@GimmeKitty Glad to help! Yea that was last year and now its just as hot again, but I got the bamboo shades going so its nice now in the shade. I defiantly like the heat better that the bitter cold Boston weather.....Cheers!
@toddatron Your video helped me confirm my suspicion that Japanese A/Cs can heat too:) I came across this video while trying to sell two clunker A/C's in Boston. Seems like the bad weather will be starting early this year with 19c today... I wish I had one of the fancy Japanese ones with heat... I'll take the hot and humid Japanese summers over Boston winters any time!
@tennsair You should be able to find one if you ask for a "Heat Pump". That is the name of the units that are capable of reversing operation to provide heat as well.
@produKtNZ Yea people pay to have the units cleaned replaced, charged what ever. There is plenty of business just not so much cutting holes in the walls and running cables.
@pinoymetaljoe Its just that say a yen is a penny. They tend to call the note a 1000 yen note or say 10 bucks or sen yen. 10000 yen is 100 bucks or say man yen. We would say hey you owe me 1000 pennies. No we say you owe me 10 bucks... dollars. As in the rigid way Japan does things usually and especially with money.......... the price is usually listed in yen each penny or yen accounted for. When you get into bigger numbers the expressions are condensed with Kanji.
Good video. I might have a chance to work as a teacher in Japan (Jet program). I was told by another person that the apartments are a glorified closet, measured in "tatami mats." LOL.
@biped19 yea that's about right if your used to having space space. I have pretty much gotten used to the scaled down sizes for everything here. I still whack my head every other day on the living room door way.
Hei.... you need someone like me, to install your new unit, or to recharge the freon. or may be yu want to relocate the unit too. I will pump down, vacuum or servicing with chemical... I just charge you about 150.00 dollars for installation..
When I lived in Japan I got one of that. However It cools only the lower part of the room so I had to put one fan in front of it to blow the cold air up.
That dry mode would be great to prevent your electronics from going bad within a year. Lived in Okinawa and had no a/c, learned to be wet all the time.
oh that makes sense haha. I have 2 rooms with doors to the balcony too. I didn't think about going through the other room because I never open it except for ventilation.
Ductless air is good for cleaning/purifying air and such since ducts get dirty, but for cooling a house here in the US...it seems like it would struggle. It is a better option for homes/condos in the city, though.
Yea good point. Most houses here are the size of large condos so room units make sense. What about the triple units? I have seen moderately sized houses in the states with three slim air units on one compressor. Mitsubishi makes it.
I hope your new house is quieter, but 400 bucks for the cheapest air conditioner seems really expensive, we often have them on sale for 89 dollars. Heck even the portable units you showed near the end that do ac and heat can be found on sale for the 400 you spent.
but maybe they area lot more efficient? 6 amps is pretty low, so you save your money back ina year or two
Hi Todd, wow, that was interesting! WHY don't we have these here in the USA if they are so efficient? How well is it working for you? Now that it is August--are you using the cooling mode? Mom wants that A/C jacket!! She is SERIOUS! It's so hot here in FL right now, ugh!
We have that in the USA . It's called ductless air condition. Instead of having a cable coming from the air conditioner that plugs into a wall outlet the wire goes from the outside unit to two circuit breaker. I have a Fujitsu ductless air conditioner.
Yes i have installed a few back on the east coast and they are a great solution. More people are using them in the US over the last ten years due to their efficiency and small size and better features.
I really like these tech videos. These really highlight the differences between Japan and the states. A complete rundown showing from your research and consumer considerations is awesome.
This is so werid I was just thinking about AC in Japan yesterday! I was watching an episode of an anime and this girl lived in a house with her sisters and parents, and she had a wall unit like the one you showed us. I'm the kind of person that ever since birth I've hated heat and needed AC so move or vacation in Japan I'm so need an AC.
You have a choice with the portable ones: Some units vent it out a window like a dryer back home (with a duct) Some portable units dry and cool the air and just spew the rest out the back. The ones like that are more for industrial use where efficiency is not so important just the directional blast of cold air.
Hate those, the portable industrial ones. Need to empty the water bucket manually. So many idiots in the data center industry think they can be used in enclosed rooms with no place to send the heat exhaust.
This is one of the technologies Japanese brands have had difficulties importing to US. Japanese ACs got so many high tech features, but I sometimes feel they have gone too far.
I use them but most people back home just want to hit a button a get cool. Sad cause the features eliminate the need for separate units for cleaning the air and such. One machine that does it all well is what we here in Japan.
Actually it was a CD player. I suppose it was a background for psychological influence so people would buy AC units. They were playing the sound loop all day in the store.
Thanks for sharing that mate:)

I see it says 1.6/1.8 kW. That's about 6000 BTU/hr or about half a ton, which is how North American units are rated.

how hot it can get in japan ? it can 56 to 60 C in kuwait here...
faisalabulaziz1 5 months ago
Make sure that the compressor doesn't need to be oriented a certain way or the oil won't lubricate the motor and seize.
