Wow, it's amazing how many people are on here criticizing Umek. He is a great producer and very knowledgeable. I actually have this issue and this was one of the better interviews I've seen. Oh and to all the "elitists" on here talking smack... there's a reason why Future Music is in his studio and not in yours.
@phillydoberman well I know he's a super skilled dude to come up with these banging tunes out of loops and mainly samples, but to me i'm more into creating you own sounds from scratch, I really loved Thomas Gold's interview & Marcel Woods maybe Future Music needs to make a Pryda interview
I'm pretty much open to anything, but what a bunch of crap. It's just a bunch of samples that some one else played, chopped up by some shlump, auto quantized and layered up untill it sounds "impressive". All he needs to do now is start dancing around in his chair, and laughing. What is this noise even for?
and as for the people who say producers like Umek dont care about the musicality of their work its only about eq, compresion, sequencing and effects, thats parts of music guys, if you know the basic of music theory you should know that. The reason why Umek talks alot of eqs and so on is for producers the complain about their music not sounding well and hes letting them know technique on how to cure that, and also hes showing us what effects wre used to get the sounds sounding good and wrk togthr
for people that are complaining about using loops and that's not being creative and putting effort, try making a song completely out of loops and we'll see how interesting the song is. As a producer there comes a time were u run out of ideas for sound designing and thinking of notes to play for a melody or what not, so that why Loops and Samples are there so you could use them and be creative with them.
What a load of crap. He's shit. Best thing to do with the gold disc is to frisby it out the window. By the way. U don't need a full understanding of music. It's normaly in the blood of a person or persons. U can hear it then have the now how to lay it down. People don't write electro music it just happens. Must be your own feelings going into it!
Since I'm watching these FMM videos on Youtube, this music has totally lost its spirit.. It's like playing Tetris with samples until it sounds good enough to hand it over to a mastering engineer.
It seems these days that the method of production, particularly dance and generic electronic whatever, begins and ends at what is otherwise the mastering stage. Watching most of these interviews, you'd think these so-called producers would make better engineers, though obviously, not at all. Based these interviews, musicality is not involved or just not an important part of their creative process. Its always, eq, compression, sequencing, effects, more effects.
The saddest example of that is when I saw one quite well-known producer (can't remember who though) talking about finding cool-sounding chords in a video "tutorial".
Complete lacking understanding of any sort of musical theory, he just fumbled around on a keyboard until he found something that sounded good. And those kind of people actually earn money with it!
While actual musicians are forced to keep their day-job. It's just sad.

I don't think that having an extensive knowledge of music theory is necessary for making music, in fact, you really don't need that much, just a basic understanding of intervals, scales, and chords. It just drives me crazy that people often believe that music is all about playing with dynamics.
@Broyale26 I never said an extensive knowledge was necessary :P but it definitely can't be harmful - and if you don't know anything at all you shouldn't be making music ^^
I do a little myself - mostly as a hobby - got some stuff up on youtube as user Sonik4269.
But I'm going to be studying music technology (starting in september).
@OmarBFG All of this requires no musical skill or talent - and the creative process is lost because you are not, in fact, creating the music you are inspired to create, but rather doing nothing else than just playing around with samples and hoping something good comes of it.
Also - Umek doesn't even do any of the mentioned above.
@AlexRider001 Btw you do not need talent to become a musician or skills, you could learn to become a musician and i think you should know that, and who said eqing and compressing is something easy to do, well if your talking about just twisting nobs and hoping to get something good out of that then ya, but when knowing about frequencies and how much amount you cut off on an eq, and understanding compression and knowing how much to compress to get the it sounding right and nice, that's not easy
@AlexRider001 yo man i respect what your saying and all that's your opinion, but how do you know Umek is messing around with the loops and hoping to get something nice, hes a professional im pretty sure he knows what he wants exactly and how to get it. And above that some times good pieces of music comes from trial and error and messing around
@AlexRider001 ya i know im not saying hes not using loops, he is. but what im saying is that hes not messing around in way as in slicing randomly to get something good, he already knows what he want and how to get it, plus he said in one of the parts either one or two, that he has phases in his life were he does his own stuff and sounds and so on, and phases were he uses loops and samples, and as i heard form his all his music he creative with those loops and samps, yet still maintanin his style
@AlexRider001 Just because they're audio clips doesn't mean they're loops mate. I know many producers who bounce out of their synths pre-processing. There's plenty of valid reasons for doing this such as CPU usage, avoiding analogue emulation glitches, freezing modulation etc. I even remember this guy saying in the last video that he didn't like [what he called] 'oscillations' in his bass sounds, so he may have just bounced them out to a take that worked for him.
@AlexRider001 I hate to sound arrogant but I must admit all I keep learning in these videos is how much more I know about music production than the majority of these guys and the jealousy I have for their positions in the industry and the equipment they own. Too many producers get lucky just because they're already fairly famous as DJ's, it's like actors who think they'll make good directors. Obviously fair play to them all though, I don't hate on them, it's literally just envy!
@wirezts i feel you dude, but it's not envy at all man, it's more like hope and passion for the pimpest career in the whole world, see during my first video it was like i love this dude then at the end of my third one i was like you suck ass man this type of shit you know watching tutorials on youtube, i mean no one in SHM can play keyboards gotta be something wrong with the industry

Overproduction:
If your track sounds like shit, layer as much shit on top of it until you can fool people into thinking you actually know what you're doing.

use loops, loops, loops and effects
oh no wait -.-

@AlexRider001
Wait, I thought you needed musical skill?
if its that easy, i'll just drop out of music school right now.
Broyale26 8 months ago
@Broyale26 That's the exact reason why I can't stand producers like Umek.
They approach creating music like it's a mathematical problem.
All I can see him use here is LOOOPS!
And as a result, his music is repetitive and boring, as well as lacking any kind of feeling whatsoever.
When I compare him to other producers who actually put so much creative thought into their songs, I'm tempted to start crying.
The fantastic James Holden and his Border Community label, for example...
