let me explain the shoe thing...

When camping, the sick boy wakes up scared. He tells the older boy that when he wakes up at night and it's dark, he is afraid that he's dead already.

To ease this fear, the older kid gives the boy his sneaker to hold while sleeping, so next time it happens again, he knows that he is still alive. Why would you be dead if you are holding a stinky sneaker when you wake up?
