The original Sith were actually an alien race living on a planet with a very strong natural concentration of dark side energy. This allowed the majority of the population to become force sensitive and they were officially the first sentient beings to learn how to use the force. I think they went extinct not long after spreading their knowledge to other races. The Jedi Order was created maybe... 100,000 years after these guys I think.

The Dark side is the easy path and the quick one, the jedi meditate to make the right choice that bring as mouch good as possible with no side effects if possible, but yeah...when the sith need to kill somthing there really is no point to think on it or the consequence. The council is not arrogant, it is often mistunderstood by the pupils(most of the time because of their impatients), but there are occasions when even jedi masters can act inadequately...but hey they ARE human.

From what I understand, to obtain these powers you should either learn from a holocron, or you obtain them from doing certain things, like Anakin aquired his force choke from strangulating younglings (he starts to feel it with his hands and so he implements the feeling in to the force) same thing is with the other Dark Side Powers, so this means that a force user has to enter a certain negative emotional state to use that power...wich of course it is not advised by the jedi council.
