This scene and the scene from The Philadelphia Story when Cary Grant shoves Katherine Hepburn's face to the ground always make me laugh. I know it's wrong but they sure didn't care for women much in the 30s and 40s.
This might seem odd, but am I the only one who thinks his foot work while dragging her to the door really gives away the fact that the man was a dancer? It's just so fancy!
Deja Vu all over again!! She asked for it! What'd she think was gonna happen? Duh! Never dawns on 'em to consider the highly probable reactions and consequences that surely would result from their vindictive actions and oblivious smart-mouth blabber. Must be a genetically determined, intrinsically female behavioral characteristic, since it's doubtful they were taught how not to think!
I love the look on his face before he packs her shoes. "yeaaaahhh? You're still going out!" that freaking smirk is fantastic. He just looked like a tough sonofabitch. Too bad he never got the chance to play Wolverine. He's the only guy that can look that pissed off.
Orson Welles called James Cagney the greatest film actor who ever stepped in front of a camera.
His interviewer (Michael Parkinson) seemed surprised ... James Cagney, really? ... to which Mr. Welles replied, oh yes, I implore you to study his films carefully, there is not a fake minute in a James Cagney performance!
Welles shared some other interesting observations about Cagney, how he broke every rule in the book for film actors yet never was he a ham, he spoke about Cagney with awe.
Mae Clarke had one hell of a year in 1931, as Dr. Frankenstein's bride in the original Karloff "Frankenstein" (the best sound horror film) and with Cagney pushing the grapefruit into her face in "The Public Enemy." Odd how her career went downhill as the decade wore on. She was something, though.
have any of you ever had a fist fight with your sister, its the same thing, sometimes a man and woman fight, but I bet your grandmother had a happier longer marriage than you had.
@southlondonpimp - Oh, yes sir buddy! Before the Hays Code was enforced in the movies, this stuff was all over the place. Only from the mid-30s until around the mid-60s did this stuff become nonexistence in the movies.
This was a great little movie... one of my favorites of his, actually. I didn't feel that sorry for her character in this scene--she was pretty awful, trying to blackmail him.
@Pat2296 If you look closely both hands were on her head. He was not hurting her. It is called acting. However, domestic violence towards women was acceptable back in the day. See how far we have come ladies.
Actually, there was a good deal of domestic violence back then - my grandmother was born in 1905 and she told some stories of what went on behind closed doors - it just wasnt' shown on the screen....
Jimmy freakin Cagney, one of the best ever. They don't make actors like they used to, and Cagney was truly one of the best of all time. He put everything on the screen and never held back. His performances, can only be summed up as amazing.
No one, before or since, has been able to portray the genteel arrogance onscreen as the incomparable Jimmy Cagney. Just look at how he sells the kick to Mae Clark's rear at 0:34. Notice how everything from head to toe is used in this kick. His head snaps back while he's on the ball of his left foot to really give it to her.
The great Jimmy Cagney at his ferocious best! Even by today's standards, this and the infamous grapefruit scene are still unnerving. In real-life, he was considered a complete gentleman and was faithfully married to his wife (Frances Cagney) for over 60 years until his death. One his last movies was "Ragtime" where he plays a police commissioner. Although in his 80s, you still feel that raw tough energy that made him famous come through. A great performer!
That hair drag was extremely well done. It really looked like he had her by the hair. He did, but she was holding onto his wrists. That was very well done.
Haven't we all wanted to do this to someone? I know I have!!! (but of course I am far too genteel)
after the grapefruit in 1931... that's the next step of this couple.. :P
