  • after the grapefruit in 1931... that's the next step of this couple.. :P

  • JC was no gentleman !

  • James Cagney and I have the same birthday :)

  • One person disliked this? I wasn't waware Mae Clarke was still alive.

  • This scene and the scene from The Philadelphia Story when Cary Grant shoves Katherine Hepburn's face to the ground always make me laugh. I know it's wrong but they sure didn't care for women much in the 30s and 40s.

  • @sonaliegh There were actresses, (Anita Gavin, my fav), who had roles that were just, or more violent! I agree w/you; it can make one laugh.

  • .....AND STAY OUT!!

  • Is that Mae Clarke or Dana Plato?

  • one woman disliked this

  • This might seem odd, but am I the only one who thinks his foot work while dragging her to the door really gives away the fact that the man was a dancer? It's just so fancy!

  • @MrHansBeckert

He moves well indeed, but for such a manly man, at 0:39 he sure throws like a girl!

  • to bad we can't do that in todays world - he was just too cool

  • I love this LMAO James Cagney was the man

  • So that's the correct way to say bye...I've been using incorrect technique...thanks for the class "It's Over 101" LOL (:-)

  • And stay out. :p

  • They dont call them them the good old days for nothing!

  • LOL showed her the door and showed her ass the boot

  • Deja Vu all over again!! She asked for it! What'd she think was gonna happen? Duh! Never dawns on 'em to consider the highly probable reactions and consequences that surely would result from their vindictive actions and oblivious smart-mouth blabber. Must be a genetically determined, intrinsically female behavioral characteristic, since it's doubtful they were taught how not to think!

  • lol at 0:32 DAS BOOT!!

  • LMAO I love these scenes, this and the grape fruit one.

  • I love the look on his face before he packs her shoes. "yeaaaahhh? You're still going out!" that freaking smirk is fantastic. He just looked like a tough sonofabitch. Too bad he never got the chance to play Wolverine. He's the only guy that can look that pissed off.

  • and good day to you ma'ma.....

  • and good day to you mama.....

  • I think I see nipples, nah, couldn't be, not in a move from this era, or is it?

  • Orson Welles called James Cagney the greatest film actor who ever stepped in front of a camera.

His interviewer (Michael Parkinson) seemed surprised ... James Cagney, really? ... to which Mr. Welles replied, oh yes, I implore you to study his films carefully, there is not a fake minute in a James Cagney performance!

Welles shared some other interesting observations about Cagney, how he broke every rule in the book for film actors yet never was he a ham, he spoke about Cagney with awe.

  • LIKE A BAUS.

  • Jesus! This is the first time I've seen this, and. . .WOW!!

  • too awesome for word

  • Did these two just enjoy being in movies where they didn't like each other or something?

  • I find this shit hilarious!

  • this scene makes james Cagney one of the best actor ever.

  • I f she any respect for Jimmy she would have got up and walk out the door, but noooo he had to drag her out by the hair.

  • @cinerama62 exactly. That was what we call bratting my friends. And he showed her how that ends. Badly.

  • @droid740 I just notice this droid740; did she "almost" say, "you son of a bitch." lol

  • He certainly has a way with the ladies!

  • Mae Clarke had one hell of a year in 1931, as Dr. Frankenstein's bride in the original Karloff "Frankenstein" (the best sound horror film) and with Cagney pushing the grapefruit into her face in "The Public Enemy." Odd how her career went downhill as the decade wore on. She was something, though.

  • LMFAO AT THE KICK!

  • More women need to be treated like this.

  • Damn, this is like the grapefruit scene from 'Public Enemy' times a thousand!

  • Wow, that couch was incredibly conveniently placed. xD

  • @Nightman221k - I know SHE was thankful!

  • Love him so much!

  • OMG. lol. cagney was quiet and peaceful in person he probably apologized so much for this lol.

  • Only here thanx to our friends O and A! Allllrighty then as Fez would say.

  • @hoopydu Now THIS scene could NEVER be done in movies now!! LMAO.

  • OOOOOOOO SHIT....THAT WAS SOOOOOO GANGSTA!!!!!!!!!

  • I'd like to do this to alot of broads

  • ahh the good old days

  • so thats how a proper gentleman used to show a lady the door.

  • oh the good old days

  • What a rude woman

  • She sure learned her lesson, and rightfully so.

  • Ya gotta give it to Cagney, he may have played a real bastard in some of his movie roles, but he sure knew how to end an argument with a woman. LOL

  • Love the man, he was "Class" like his films.

  • Wow, compare this to when Christopher threw out Adriana

  • Did Mae Clarke and Cagney ever get along in a movie?

  • fuck out, bitch!

  • lol dumb bitch got owned!

  • have any of you ever had a fist fight with your sister, its the same thing, sometimes a man and woman fight, but I bet your grandmother had a happier longer marriage than you had.

  • just WOW!

  • shit they knew how to treat women back then

  • He is so cool..

  • His momma should have told him it's wrong to hurt girls!

Boys, this is not the way you should treat girls!

  • Do you really think we needed you to tell us that?

You make it sound like I'm going to beat the shit out of my mom just because Jimmy Cagney did it in a movie.

  • You're being too literal!

  • thats exactly the way to treat them!

  • Maybe his parents abused and mistreated him! Men who are violent towards women (such as serial killers and rapists) were often abused as children.

  • wizardofhumor you are one boring cunt

  • @WizardOfHumor1989 did not know that?

  • @WizardOfHumor1989 Some want to treat women better

  • FUCKING HELL....i cant beleive they even allowed to show this back then. He even kicked her as well. Man times have changed ALOT.

  • @southlondonpimp - Oh, yes sir buddy! Before the Hays Code was enforced in the movies, this stuff was all over the place. Only from the mid-30s until around the mid-60s did this stuff become nonexistence in the movies.

  • I think at the very end she was saying

    "you son of...". LOL

  • I love his footwork at :28 :)

  • This was a great little movie... one of my favorites of his, actually. I didn't feel that sorry for her character in this scene--she was pretty awful, trying to blackmail him.

  • Mae Clarke was one beautiful babe. Cagney is really brutal to her - but that's life in Cagney's mob.

  • Mae Clark took a lot of abuse from Cagney. But even at his most beastly, we still love him!

  • @Pat2296 If you look closely both hands were on her head. He was not hurting her. It is called acting. However, domestic violence towards women was acceptable back in the day. See how far we have come ladies.

  • @empressoffrance Not sure we have come that far, judging from some of the comments here, heh.

  • Epic

  • People must have been schocked. You didn't do that to women back then, but he really breaks the rules.

Let's see which stars or so called singers today would you like to see Cagney do that to?

  • Actually, there was a good deal of domestic violence back then - my grandmother was born in 1905 and she told some stories of what went on behind closed doors - it just wasnt' shown on the screen....

  • lollllll

  • LOL!!! You gotta love Cagney!

  • Have to say more women have respect for a man like that , Than a wimp who beats around a bush.

    Love James Cagney!

  • Everything but a BOOT TO THE HEAD!!!

  • Jimmy freakin Cagney, one of the best ever. They don't make actors like they used to, and Cagney was truly one of the best of all time. He put everything on the screen and never held back. His performances, can only be summed up as amazing.

  • No one, before or since, has been able to portray the genteel arrogance onscreen as the incomparable Jimmy Cagney. Just look at how he sells the kick to Mae Clark's rear at 0:34. Notice how everything from head to toe is used in this kick. His head snaps back while he's on the ball of his left foot to really give it to her.

  • The great Jimmy Cagney at his ferocious best! Even by today's standards, this and the infamous grapefruit scene are still unnerving. In real-life, he was considered a complete gentleman and was faithfully married to his wife (Frances Cagney) for over 60 years until his death. One his last movies was "Ragtime" where he plays a police commissioner. Although in his 80s, you still feel that raw tough energy that made him famous come through. A great performer!

  • Good thing that couch was there when he threw her out the door!

  • That hair drag was extremely well done. It really looked like he had her by the hair. He did, but she was holding onto his wrists. That was very well done.

Haven't we all wanted to do this to someone? I know I have!!! (but of course I am far too genteel)

  • Uh, no.

  • Now that's gangsta.....

  • First a grapefruit in the face and then a hair tug followed by an ass kick. What will he think of next?

  • Cagney at his best...he takes S*** from no one

  • ROF LMAOOOOOOOO

  • Nobody played or plays nasty quite like James Cagney. In fact, nobody even comes close!

  • classic!

  • It's the second film where gagney attack Clark with violence. háaa háaaa. they are funny... If wasn't a drama could be comic.
