Maybe Stewie would make more 'brushstrokes' if you used some sort of safe finger paint? You could roll out some paper, put food at one end and then splotch some paint on their feet to start. Then maybe they would get interested in the marks their feet made as they went to get the food and the interest would prompt them to make more marks.
