Ok. Let me get this straight. Jim Miller wrote the song but changed his name to ewan mc caul. Did he change his name cause he wanted to be irish? Well why dont you complain to him. Thats who you should be angry with. Not me. it doesnt matter what town the song was written about or nationality. Nobody cares. Most middle class workers in dirty little towns relate to this song because no matter where you live we pretty much all relate to the earthy message that the song relates.
excellent tune fellows. we always play this one around st patricks day. i like the pogues version of it. but i dont have a gap between my two front teeth, nor that kind of raspy voice so we struggle along, ha, ha.
Why would you want to play an English song about an English industrial town, Salford in Lancashire, on or around St.Patrick's Day. Aren't there more suitable real Irish tunes you could play? Just because a song is sung by an Irishman or played by an Irish group it does not follow that the music is Irish.
dont get your bowels in an uproar mate. its just a song. it was written by a scotsman and made popular by the dubliners so it is pretty much accepted in the irish category or whoever else wants to use it. more than anything its just a good song and a lot of people like it.
so cherio ol boy. n ave' yerself a happy new year.
I think that you will find that it was made popular by The Spinners, a Liverpool based folk group who recorded it in 1964. The Dubliners did not record it ubtil 1968. Ewen McColl, real name James Miller, was born and raised in Salford and spent most of his life there. The song was written about Salford and apart from the fact that The Dubliners sang it, it has bugger all to do with Ireland nor St.Patrick. You are just a New World pseudo Irishman with about as little Irish blood as I've got.

That is the most beautiful rendirion of this song I've heard, so well done boys,
May I ask please, do you have the chords or tab for the mandolin accompaniament?
I have very, very basic open chords for mandolin - G, C, G, D, Em. But yours is several levels above.

Very very good, again the music is outstanding, and I have to say the singing was very good as well.
