It's then a fifty-fifty ball whether or not they get use the right letter. That's how "Engrish" arises in Japanese translations. "French fries" becomes "Flench flies", "English" becomes "Engrish", and "Errol" becomes "Error".

It's the correct transliteration of the original name in the Japanese version, which was エラー (ERAA), and バグ (BAGU) is for "bug", so it follows the play on words. Bagu has an essential role in the game since you need him to get to Death Mountain. Error has something else to say, but it's only a hint and does nothing strictly essential to the progress of the game...

This wouldn't be a coding error, because the NES doesn't have enough space to really include english language debugging. If it would have been a coding error, it would have simply shut the game down or froze. This almost certainly was intentional.

@piip4 - No. The Japanese usually only mix them up at the beginning of a syllable, not at the end, because "Error" in Japanese is "Eraa" (imagine saying it with a British accent), and "Errol" is "Erooru" (where "oo" is a long "o"). The real reason he's called Error is because there's another character named Bug (which the localizers misspelled as Bagu, because that's how the Japanese pronounce it). Error and Bug, get it?
