Those dogs have little to no bond with the owner. They should be separated from each other and taught that all good things in their lives depend upon the good will of their owner. The attempt to get them to come on the relatively weak bribe of a treat when they are already well fed and happy playing with each other is ridiculousness.

Awesome...checking back a week later and just want to say that this tip really helped me! I went out and bought a whistle and my dog comes to me whenever i blow it now! :)
this is sooo bad ... You'll have to have whistle and treats on you at all times and assume that nothing else more exciting than a treat or louder than a whistle gets in the way
@CarnEHge I'm guessing you don't know much about reward based training? If so you would know how wrong you are. If your dog has to have a treat in order to come, then you (not you specifically but the human involved) have not trained your dog to come when "called or whistled" but more so to come when food is presented. I used to believe as you did, but have since learned otherwise, and I think my dogs and I are both better off for it.
@Fidography I agree with what you said, and I know all about instilling behaviours using positive reinforcement (or reward based training) but what she is doing is temporarily distracting the dogs nothing more. Say you have a dog that chased a squirrel for the first time and caught it... try using a treat to get your dog to give up the squirrel ... This technique is most effective when you start training them from when they are puppies. Her use of it here is ridiculous
@CarnEHge Well I guess in this situation she had to start somewhere, building that reinforcement history. I have used treats to call my dogs off of dead (insert animal) but my results are probably more reliable due to the fact that we have already built up a history of "come" = something yummy. My dogs are NOT one to let that opportunity pass up...specially as I'll use high value rewards when we're off leash. (hot dogs, cheese, something reaaallly good.)
@Fidography If you're looking to teach a dog to ignore its most basic instinct (to chase animals smaller than it) you have to use punishment. And I don't mean using physical abuse but to a dog simply restricting its movement is a form of punsihment. So I'd use a short leash and keep them stationary until they realize that this is the punishment for chasing. A negative consequence for chasing would be more time-effecitive than attempting to repeatedly distract them using a whistle or a treat.
@CarnEHge hmmm ok.....I can see that working in a controlled situation/ with certain dogs...(you knew the animal was there, you already had the dog on leash etc..) but in an off leash situation, you'd need to be MORE rewarding than the other reinforcer, as I'm sure you know, chasing is extremely self-reinforcing so in order for me to be more appealing to my dog, I'd have to have some sort of motivator. I know for my current pup in training, he'd sit through the "punishment" and as soon....
@CarnEHge given the opportunity he'd be right back at it again. However bring food into the situation, I can get that dog to stand on his head, while a squirrel rand around his leg. My other two are the same. However, the fourth pup I'm watching now would probably have to restrained/re moved from the situation because she is not food motivated. So ultimately it would depend on the dog is what I'm concluding. In this case it seems to have worked as well.
I hate victoria... this show is for dumbazz losers... victoria is bltch, i hate the way she judges people and looks down on them.. I just came here to say this.
@Caninefan999 A clicker marks a behaviour, it doesn't bring a dog back. You could say Come! and click when the dog comes then give a treat. The point in the whistle is its loud and can be hear far away, it means good things that the dog can only get by returning to you
Great video - as an alternative to a whistle....I use hands clapping cos it's not my voice and it works as a Hey, I am serious, this is NOW! Recall now! Clap Clap! I praise play alternatively with reward food so as not to build up a food dependency!

@NattieChristopher True but they do give rewards for behaviour that acts for the good of survival. E.g. protection, food, shelter. We are not dogs and it is an gross underestimation of dogs' intelligence to think that they see us as other dogs, even if we use Cesar's 'methods'. Every animal can be trained and rehabilitated using motivators, such as food. We reward the good behaviours, which gives us control and a happy dog. Cesar physically punishes the bad and doesn't teach what's good.
the problem with training to a whistle is the chance of having a whistle with you at all times is pretty slim not to mention anyone can blow a whistle ,what if everyone at the dog park had one? wouldn't that be confusing
@panzertoo I thought that too. When i trained my dog i used a click of the tounge cos no one else does that. I started with a whistle but it turned into chaos!
@panzertoo It works really well/ I use it for getting her attention for other training. For example, Cass is scared of bikes so whenever she shes one i click me tongue and she comes and i treat. Its really useful. x
@panzertoo My dog is trained to whistle, as my dog trainer is a gundog man, and uses it for his retrievers. I take mine to the park all the time, and constantly reinforce the recall with the whistle,as it is the 'command' with the most reward for him. And there are hundreds of whistle makes out there, not to mention whistlers are 'supposed' to create their own whistle peep signature.. even 4 quick peeps on the whistle is different for different people.
@battousaiblade If everybody would do as you do there would be a lot less dead dogs. Never let your dog off leash if you have even 1% doubt it might run away. I call this good management.
Don't rely on a whistle to work every time especially near a busy road or in public place with lots of distractions for your dog... this is a great lesson on how to train your dog to come to you in a tennis court and that's about it...
@jackthelad57 Read the description: this owner wants to be able to recall her dogs while hiking, probably not near a street. She wants to have something that will carry farther than her voice. Sportsmen use whistles to recall hunting or retrieving dogs all the time.
Your right, she doesn't use the 'flooding' method to get dogs to face their fears. She has been professionally trained and changes her methods to positive dog training methods that work best.
@teddybeardustin A child is a child and a dog is a dog, period. Why do you people treat dogs as children, it is incomprehensible. What is a dog? It's an animal, not a human. When people realize thie dogs will be happier. And Ceasr does not treat dogs badly like you say. This is in your dreams only.
@teddybeardustin Cesar would be hunted by authorities if he made children eat and drink from a bowl on the floor. If he made them use the toilet on the lawn. If he tied a collar and leash to their necks and pulled them around. Dogs are NOT children!!!
You've never seen children eating while sitting on the floor? You've never seen kids pissing on a tree in a relative proximity to their parents? You must not also be aware that there are leash like apparatuses for children widely available on the market either.
Next time you present an argument, make it relevant to the discussion, which in this case is disciplinary action regarding improper behavior. You failed in any form to address this in even the vaguest regard.
@teddybeardustin 1. Parents (unless they are not fit to be called such) will NOT force their kids to eat/drink from a bowl on the floor. Kids do this by choice. I do not know what kind of neighbourhoods you have visited, but I have NEVER seen a kid use the toilet outdoors. This might happen if parents are mentally unstable or don't care if their kids run feral. Those types of parents are usually reported to the authorities anyway.
I didn't construct my argument against you saying that parents force their kids to eat from the floor.
You've never seen kids pissing outdoors? Do a search on this website. I'm sure you'll find it, and the general consensus will hardly deem it abusive, if used properly.
@teddybeardustin 2.Child harnesses do not tie around the neck. There would be an uproar if they did. I will address this video clip. It is an absolute farce. Victoria failed to get the attention of the dogs. So much for it being a "really good effective method". If this had been in a non-enclosed area, these dogs could easily have run off and get killed on a road. If she were such a brilliant trainer, she should be able to get a dog to pay attention instantly. Not having to wait for a "lull".
@teddybeardustin 3. Then again, the woman is considered a joke in many training/behavioural circles. She is also a liar. Many a time when she has claimed to be in New York training dogs, she has actually been appearing on stage with her actor husband. She stated in the first season opening titles of her show that no dog can't be trained, then tells the owners of a dog that their pet should be put down.
@teddybeardustin4. Then releases a statement saying "as I mentioned on the programme and still firmly believe, once a dog has shown the propensity not just to bite, but to attack (especially unprovoked), that dog can never be trusted not to attack again". Make up your flaming mind Victoria!! Which of those two statements is true? Both are very contradictory.
@teddybeardustin 1. You talk absolute rubbish!! There is plenty of evidence to prove that Cesar's methods work. His show would NOT have lasted seven seasons, he would NOT have been invited to dozens of countries, he would NOT be consulted by the PRESIDENT of the USA (a Harvard graduate and Nobel Peace Prize winner) , if his methods were ineffective. Unlike your bunny hugging, R+ trainers, he treats dogs as dogs. The woman in this video is an abomination to dog training.
@NattieChristopher Hey troll. If you think 'good telly' or mass approval is evidence of good &effective dog training, you're not really mentally capable of being in charge of an animal, so I hope you have no pets.
I find it funny that you advocate 'doing some research' - it's clear you have steered away from actual scientific work &what has been discovered in the past 40 year about ethology in general, wolves and domestic dogs specifically. Go yell about your 'PROVEN FACT!11!' elsewhere.
@teddybeardustin 2. If parents are found to be forcing their kids to use the toilet outdoors, then of course they are going to be deemed unfit parents by welfare organisations. Children who habitually use the toilet outside, are very often linked to sexually abusive parents. This is a proven FACT. Other forms of abuse are also connected to parents making their children use the toilet outdoors. Such as physical and mental abuse. Not to mention neglect. FACT!! Go and do some research. I did!!
agreed. NattieChristopher has no idea what they're talkin' about. who cares if Stillwell seems rude. she's from England. we all sound bitter compaired to Americans. it's how our society is. Millan teaches methods that work only for a short period of time. Stillwell's reasearch lasts for years as long as the owner continues to train their dog in healthy and positive ways. Nattie needs to do more research from an open-mind an' not from speculation an' hearsay.
@sye117 I've got a very good idea as to what I'm talking about! And what on earth has Victoria being English got to do with it? I'm Scottish & am always complimented on my accent when I'm in America & Canada. I've been told I have a soft & gentle accent. My English friends often get told the same thing. It's Victoria's personality & 'skills' as a 'dog trainer' that people dislike. Cesar NEVER says his methods are quick fixes. He ALWAYS says that his methods need to be ongoing & consistent.
@teddybeardustin 5. I really cannot stand this woman. She has contradicted herself on so many occasions, is arrogant to the point of exclaiming "yes I am" after being asked if she was the god of dog training. Not to mention the fact that many people who have met her say she is not a nice person to be around. It is also the belief of many that she has been sued for fraud.
@NattieChristopher I don't think you have much of a life, because you are SO dedicated to insulting Victoria and you know a ridiculous amount about her.
@pnkrk1039 I lead a very happy life thank you very much. I also happen to have plenty of interests. It is NOT my life's work to sit at the computer researching VS all the time. I've never liked her. She never comes over as being genuine or that knowledgeable about dogs. I just did a little bit of digging and was proven right.
@teddybeardustin 6. No name has been mentioned, but a well known, glamorous, female British dog trainer was sued by the UK's Channel 4 for not being a certified trainer. The details that have been released all point the finger at Victoria. The only other female trainer in the UK (within recent years) to have her own series is Jane Fennell. No offence to her, but she is not what you would call glamorous.
@teddybeardustin 7. A reference was also made to an episode in which the trainer recommended a dog be put down. Something which was included in the episode. This happened in the Benji/Bramble episode of Victoria's show. The last British episodes of IMOTD were made early 2008. Talk of the court case started mid/late 2008. There are too many similarities for it not to be Victoria. All those advocating her still think she is wonderful?
I guess everyone is supposed to carry a whistle on them every time they are with their dog as opposed to actually using voice manipulation. Just another way to market unnecessary dog training equipment.
@ashisbaby17 Read the description: this owner wanted something that could help her dogs be recalled while hiking. This gives them more freedom, as she can let them roam farther than her voice might carry.
yeah i think... im pretty sure its cuz like even though the dogs have bad behavior the owner does not give the dog discipline nor do they do any action reinforcing good behaivior, therefore i think the dogs will see that behavior as acceptable behavior... and yes i was also trying to make myself sound smart... -ish :P XD!
its a natural truth that dogs need strong leaders to be happy. In the wild without a strong leader, a becomes weak and has the possibility to die out. Therefore it is natural for a dog to want to take over when there is no strong leader to lead a group.
0:43 Its cute how after they got the treat, they looked at eachother, like "sweet!"

Not to mention the fact that many people who have met her say she is not a nice person to be around. It is also the belief of many that she has been sued for fraud.

@NattieChristopher I don't think you have much of a life, because you are SO dedicated to insulting Victoria and you know a ridiculous amount about her.
And what do you do? Post Youtube comments.

Probably true. Most women are submissive, therefore do not know how to control dogs.

why?

and if a man is submissive? Should he not own a dog?
Azkamina 2 years ago
yeah i think... im pretty sure its cuz like even though the dogs have bad behavior the owner does not give the dog discipline nor do they do any action reinforcing good behaivior, therefore i think the dogs will see that behavior as acceptable behavior... and yes i was also trying to make myself sound smart... -ish :P XD!

yes, submissive people are not good leaders..
its a natural truth that dogs need strong leaders to be happy. In the wild without a strong leader, a becomes weak and has the possibility to die out. Therefore it is natural for a dog to want to take over when there is no strong leader to lead a group.
