Hi , I'm from Melbourne,Australia, We have Horses in the Heart of Melbourne. , The cruelty is heartbresking. The Horse almost collapse with exhaustion , they atr dehytrated and in very inhealthy condition. The owners say to tourist 100 bucks around Melbourne...thats all they think about. Our Mayor in Melbourne has regulations but they are not aheard to. I hope all of us world wide against this money making animal cruelty all get together , Horse are majestic and should be free.

I'm a horse lover, and I'll let you know this. I've heard the accusations, and see the situation has sad. But for me, the reason I see it as being cruel, is because those horses can't be horses. They have to live in a stuffy city, without feeling grass under their hooves. I frankly believe that the Mayor should have an area of central park, that is for the horses only, where they can can go and graze, and be horses for a while, and give them days off so they can relax.
@charmed6057 yes this is true in bigger horse companies but this is not the case in privatly owned horse carriages. The owner after work takes their horse back to the farm and has some days off to run in the pasture which is more breaks than a school horse gets. I repeat the sudden banning of work for these horses would result in a massacre of healthy horses they are larger than the average horse which means they cost more.

Let's get real here. The difference between dis-spirited and calm is like night and day. A horse that stands quietly with little movement is happy/content. Head down, ears and facial muscles relaxed. I high-spirited horse is an unhappy one. Horses like this look around with ears forward and move quickly. This can easily be seen with horses at liberty or wild. When left alone horses don't jump/play/run often. To understand how a horse thinks/feels, you must first learn their language.
As long as the horses are well cared for shut the hell up. Some of these guys are better treated at their "jobs" pulling carriages than most people are at their customer service positions.

I have bought wild horses from the BLM and I can tell you they are in pretty poor shape. The govt. sells them because cattle ranchers out here shoot them so that there's more food for their cows. Most of the wild horses are scrawny, covered with cuts, bruises and ticks. They also have endurance, tough feet and are easy to train, as no human has messed them up yet.
These horses look well cared for to me. They seem to be calm, not dispirited. You need a calm quiet horse to be in traffic.
Out here in the West there are horses (in my area) with plenty of room to roam, no work to do, and they are starving to death because their owners don't buy hay for them. Some people like to believe the horse can just get enough to eat in winter from what they paw up from the snow. Domestic horses die pretty often from this misconception.

I am an animal lover. But I think the horses are well feed and looked after, however horses do not belong in this kind of environment, among cars. The people in the carriage have a great risk of a fateul accident. Also the horse can sometimes become stunned by a sudden loud sound like car honks. It doesn't matter how long the horse has been in the city you cant change its instincts that have developed for 1 million years. IT SHOULD BE BAND for that safety of people and horses. Mostly people.
Look....horses work alongside vehicular traffic all over the world. There were 36 cyclist deaths in NYC, 186 pedestrian deaths last year...are you going to say "ban bicycles and walking", too? Carriage horses go through a variety of tests before they are put on the streets. Any activist that says ALL horse drawn carriages should be banned is ignorant to the reality of the business. I agree that in the summer, hours should be shorter and water should CONSTANTLY be offered.

If it's about the money, than the horses are really well cared for. A ugly, weak and sick horse isn't going to attract potential customers. Simple as that. It sounds like NYC doesn't need a ban, but some sensible regulations. Charleston has a great safety and health record with none of the supposed abuse that happens in NY. Our animals are rectally temped and given water EVERY tour. They eat literally the best and most expensive food and dozens of pounds of hay a day. Additionally, they average one week a month at the farm. Most of this isn't regulation, it's just fiscally sound. Healthier, happier, well kept animals work better and make more $.

They're on farms pulling plows the equivalent of a 10,000 pound carriage (the plow isn't 10,000 lbs, but when you factor the coefficient of friction difference from dirt to a road . . .). Hi , I'm from Melbourne,Australia, We have Horses in the Heart of Melbourne. , The cruelty is heartbresking. The Horse almost collapse with exhaustion , they atr dehytrated and in very inhealthy condition. The owners say to tourist 100 bucks around Melbourne...thats all they think about. Our Mayor in Melbourne has regulations but they are not aheard to. I hope all of us world wide against this money making animal cruelty all get together , Horse are majestic and should be free.

Hmm that woman isn't exactly arguing her point very well -_- I'll admit that I agree that worldwide there should be limitations on the use of horses in cities because a lot of the time it is a big risk for the horse as there's lots to spook it and you get real idiots in cars these days too. The number of times car owners have pulled out on me and my dad on the motorbike is ridiculous, they think they own the place. I'm a horse lover, and I'll let you know this. I've heard the accusations, and see the situation has sad. But for me, the reason I see it as being cruel, is because those horses can't be horses. They have to live in a stuffy city, without feeling grass under their hooves. I frankly believe that the Mayor should have an area of central park, that is for the horses only, where they can can go and graze, and be horses for a while, and give them days off so they can relax.

@charmed6057 yes this is true in bigger horse companies but this is not the case in privatly owned horse carriages. The owner after work takes their horse back to the farm and has some days off to run in the pasture which is more breaks than a school horse gets. I repeat the sudden banning of work for these horses would result in a massacre of healthy horses they are larger than the average horse which means they cost more.

Let's get real here. The difference between dis-spirited and calm is like night and day. A horse that stands quietly with little movement is happy/content. Head down, ears and facial muscles relaxed. I high-spirited horse is an unhappy one. Horses like this look around with ears forward and move quickly. This can easily be seen with horses at liberty or wild. When left alone horses don't jump/play/run often. To understand how a horse thinks/feels, you must first learn their language.

I have bought wild horses from the BLM and I can tell you they are in pretty poor shape. The govt. sells them because cattle ranchers out here shoot them so that there's more food for their cows. Most of the wild horses are scrawny, covered with cuts, bruises and ticks. They also have endurance, tough feet and are easy to train, as no human has messed them up yet.

These horses look well cared for to me. They seem to be calm, not dispirited. You need a calm quiet horse to be in traffic.
Out here in the West there are horses (in my area) with plenty of room to roam, no work to do, and they are starving to death because their owners don't buy hay for them. Some people like to believe the horse can just get enough to eat in winter from what they paw up from the snow. Domestic horses die pretty often from this misconception.

I am an animal lover. But I think the horses are well feed and looked after, however horses do not belong in this kind of environment, among cars. The people in the carriage have a great risk of a fateul accident. Also the horse can sometimes become stunned by a sudden loud sound like car honks. It doesn't matter how long the horse has been in the city you cant change its instincts that have developed for 1 million years. IT SHOULD BE BAND for that safety of people and horses. Mostly people.

Carriage horses go through a variety of tests before they are put on the streets. Any activist that says ALL horse drawn carriages should be banned is ignorant to the reality of the business. The last time I saw one at 5th Ave it was being cleaned by a man who spoke no English, did a sloppy job of cleaning and couldn't answer if he had proper working papers.
The one at 6th Ave was bone dry last time I looked.

The horses are not well kept in NYC and they actually pass out from heat exhaustion in the city. After years of abuse they are discarded. and they average one week a month at the farm? It sounds like NYC doesn't need a ban, but some sensible regulations. Charleston has a great safety and health record with none of the supposed abuse that happens in NY. Our animals are rectally temped and given water EVERY tour. They eat literally the best and most expensive food and dozens of pounds of hay a day. Additionally, they average one week a month at the farm. Most of this isn't regulation, it's just fiscally sound. Healthier, happier, well kept animals work better and make more $.

Well, I'm not sure about all peta and everyone else has to say is true. But my main concern is when you put a animal that weighs more or less 1000 lbs, plus the cart and those riding. T hen you put that in a city full of drivers who don't all deserve the card that allows them behind the wheel. We all know the kind, drink in the lap, cigerette in one hand and doing make up or eating at the same time. I think it would be better if they could have an area cut off for them. Not just CP.

I'm not saying jobs dont or shouldnt get eliminated, rather if youre going to destroy an entire group's income you need to take the decision seriously and be sure before you act rashly. Much of the information regarding the well being of horses is simply misinformation and propaganda. For instance, it was charged that the average life of a horse in the industry is 4.5 years. You're led to believe at age 4 they die. In reality, this simply means they retire the animal after that period.

I cant speak specifically about NYC but there is a big industry in Charleston - where it's 90+ degrees and 90%+ humidity for almost half the year. There has NEVER been a heat related incident. All these people care about is ending the business, regardless of facts. Im saying that making money and animal care arent mutually exclusive - the 2 can coexist and if you dont believe me, come to Charleston.We have animals that have worked for 20 years, time that FAR exceeds a wild horses entire lifespan

No one said they die at age 4, the industry buy the horses from auction who are old and then overworked them. some NYC carriage horses were rescued from slaughter by some groups. IT is very sad. please learn some facts before you doom these poor horses. there is no excuse for this cruelty

Cruelty? Do u know what draught animals do when they're not pulling carriages? They're on farms pulling plows the equivalent of a 10,000 pound carriage (the plow isn't 10,000 lbs, but when you factor the coefficient of friction difference from dirt to a road . . .). Pulling a carriage for them is like me pushing a baby stroller. Draught animals are born and bread for one purpose: pulling crap, and they're great at it. Hmmm, some amish farm pulling 17th century equipment or a nice city carriage?

To say that the carriages arent vital to tourism, and thus should be banned, is absurd. That's not the point - clearly NYC would persist without them. The real issue is stealing a number of people's businesses and their livelihood. If you're going to make an entire industry unemployed overnight with a pen stroke, you better have some good evidence to suggest it's absolutely necessary. What if someone just Banned your job - it's not a decision you take lightly.

I put link on my page. Common sense, not all members voted on every issues in an association. This legal position taken by the association of the bar of NYC has been posted on their website and known for over a year.
