just found out why Ashley tweeted this. The little girl (well not little anymore) Tatum O'Neal was in Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal with Ashley
The song in the background is Ozzie Nelson's "About A Quarter to Nine" which was a top ten hit in 1935. Arranged by Billy Fisher, who later arranged for Gleason and Sullivan's shows.
It must be thirty years since I saw this. Why it isn't shown on TV is beyond me. There must be a whole generation who have never enjoyed this work of art.
Just saw this for the first time, last night, on TV. To be honest, I picked up on the fact it was more modern than it looked - that it was a homage to much earlier cinema styles, but I figured it was only five or ten years old. To hear it's older than me... that is one timeless piece of film making.
He was a great actor, but nightmare father. He was so bitter at her winning the Oscar he didnt even accompany her to the ceremony. She had to go alone at age 10.
He definately should have won an Oscar for this film, but to take it out on your little daughter is unforgivable.
@ipolson what, really? he couldn't attend her oscar acceptance. he was filming in ireland and couldn't make it. he had his parents go along with tatum to accept her oscar. she grew up to be a jealous kid who didn't accept her father's happiness until years later. tell it like it happened
@ipolson what, really? he couldn't attend her oscar acceptance. he was filming in ireland and couldn't make it. he had his parents go along with tatum to accept her oscar. she grew up to be a jealous kid who didn't accept her father's happiness until years later. tell it like it happened
This is the greatness of real good actors: they can look like they've got real good chemistry onscreen though in real life there's nothing but mutual loath between them. These great actors, they're consummate pros. :)
My eight year old girl wanted to study the presidents on her own so while at the store one day, she bought a place mat with all of the presidents on them. I spent many hours helping her learn the presidents names but when it came to Franklin Roosevelt, I told her to call him "Frankie." Now when I ask her who the president during the great depression was....she'll say in her innocent, 8-year-old voice..."Frankie Roosevelt !" She sounds so much like Tatum that I just have to giggle...
The director of this movie took Tatum aside and advised her how to play this scene or how to deliver the line " Then get it." Basically he told Tatum. " Take your time with that line." and used John Wayne as an example. " Most of all remember you got him by the balls.." Tatum blushed and exclaimed " Ohh Peter.." and then they shot the scene. Goes to show how good directing and a great actress equals a brilliant piece of cinamtic history.
I am embarrassed to admit how many times I have seen this movie over the last fifteen years!! Let's just say many times. I love everything about the movie - the plot, the actors, the acting, the b&w effect, and of course the music. There was one mistake - in one segment her father lights a cigarette while in the car, and seconds later you see him finishing it. How could they not have spotted this in '73?
If you buy this movie on DVD there is a seperate section on "the making of papermoon". It shows a few of the bloopers during filming...they are a blast!
This film just works on so many levels. This is an amazing scene. Ryan O'Neil's reaction with his mouth full when she first says "I want my $200" is absolutely priceless. This is comedy at its best, but there is so much more going on here. The icy stare she gives him "Then git it..." is chilling to think that she was 9 or 10 at the time this was filmed. Absolutely amazing.
This scene was filmed in McCracken, Kansas. Unfortunately, the building that they are in was torn down two years ago and is now a vacant lot. The building across the street is still there.
Adorable Tatum. My mother was identical to her as a child in the '30's. The O'Neal's accents are not always non-California-esq, but still they did ok. It's a classic film.
Dr. Nehi was one flavor. Peach, Grape, and Orange were others as well as Root Beer and others. The original Nehi was actually cola. It was the cola that lasted the longest in popularity and the Nehi corporation later changed its name to Royal Crown Cola.

Best Actor: Jack Lemmon as a crooked business man in Save The Tiger. Glenda Jackson A touch of Class and John Houseman as the cantankerous Harvard Law school professor in The Paper Chase.
Tatum O'Neal totally deserved the Oscar! I'm so happy she won! As far as Ryan O'Neal, a friggin dog could be a better actor. Thank God he never won an Oscar, besides his hey day was in like the 70's at thats it!
My fave scene in all of Moviewood. Now, if only AMC or the other networks would play this movie back to back like they do Forest Gump. Then, there would peace all over the land. lol -S
I love this film the B&W really makes it , I especially love this scene, 2.46 with his mouth full ha, ha, ha. an her name-aint precious , love it all.
I live in St Joe--where much of this movie was filmed--and teach US history--I show it during my Great Depression Unit and give bonus points for kids who take pics of themselves in front of landmarks seen in the film (ie where he gets beaten up, Addie in front of the bank, and where Mose says he "swallowed his gold tooth".
I just recorded this on my DVR the other day. I remember the day my Dad had introduced me to this. I love this movie so much. My dad was telling me he had seen this at the old drive in. LOL! Just wanted to say that this is one of the best movies I had ever seen in my life.
I love this scene. It's funny how Addie (Tatum) won't eat her food until she gets her money. It's also funny how Moze (Ryan) keeps telling her to eat her coney island.
I've always thought Ryan O'Neal was really overlooked for how talented and great he was in this film, Tatum was great and everyone raved, but no one said how great he was.
I just saw "Paper Moon" again--it was a memorial tribute to Laszlo Kovacs--and was even more impressed than I was the first time, and all the times since. What a perfect film--I hope everyone watches it!
