  • thank you, WKNU, for putting this up... a great talent, made all the greater by this spare production

  • Only just found him a few nights ago on last.fm. Ordered "Childish Things" right away, can't wait for it to arrive so I can promote the McMurtry philosophy in the UK. Wow!

  • his shows are fine, he's a genius and this song is tops and the guitar, nobody plays like him, he is truly unique

  • He's like the new Dylan!

  • He sees it all behind his eyes and his hands go missin' but they come up dry. God. Damn.

  • @biguglyoatmeal ....I think it is ...."hands go searchin'", though. but God Damn, yes.

  • @zelhusker absolutely correct. on all counts

  • One of THE Best!

  • Awesome...thanks for sharing. This guy thinks the same way most of us about our country and the way it has been twisted since 1980...keep on James..keep on!

  • Clyde Clifford (Beaker Street) played his music one night; I was hooked right away.

Saw him last Friday; an excellent show. Met him & got his autograph afterward...

I highly recommend you go see his show & "have you a time"

  • OK, this is just amazing! I have loved and appreciated the talent of J.M. since "Too Long In The Wasteland" came out on vinyl.

This song makes all his songwriting talents shine through!

All I can say is: WOOOOOOOOW!

  • I love this guy, I'm in awe of his words and guitar...

  • He sees it all behind his eyes, and his hands go searchin' , but they come up dry.... and halfway thru that waking dream.....

  • @RobL2756 When I kept waiting for a 'conclusion/ tie in' to this story, it never came. No 'moral' to this story. Two paths that crossed, and went on their ways. But the characters look back and remember. Been there. JMcM left room for us to make a new 'story' every time we listen. I can't wait 'til the movie comes out, and the Writers and Director have their turns to 'interpret' this one!

  • The second coming of Townes Van Zandt?

  • McMurtry is the Woody Guthrie of our generation. Good stuff.

  • I love this song.

  • Discovered him last summer and listened to him almost continually for about 3 months ... he's a genius from my perspective ... I don't know anyone who can write like him ... Sam Baker comes to mind, but in a different way ... simply knocks me out ...

  • @lewistv I'm with you.

  • This man is one of the best songwriters that has ever been, and he is a guitar pickin' genius, and if you ever see him live in a small venue you'll know I'm telling the truth.

  • saw him twice will see him anytime here is near here!!

  • @jamcrane3 I saw him live looong ago in Rochester, NY... Late 80s or very early 90s. He was awesome.

  • From the lyrics, who is Teddy?

  • @xflyingtiger It's "potato fields all muddy and brown"

  • i love James music i have yet to see him live las time he was in san antonio i had to work

  • Hell, if you live that close to Austin, go see him at the Continental Club. He plays a midnight show there nearly every Wednesday night. Good times!

  • I guess my next vacation better be to Austin!

  • This song is by far one of my favorites from McMurtry. He is such an amazing singer/songwriter. All of his songs have memories that go along with them

  • Haven't we all been on that slippery slope? Man I can see this whole story unfold in my mind. Wicked?

  • His father is Larry McMurtry so writing is in his genes no doubt.

  • I'm not the only one that gets this?

    Cool.

  • Dysfunctional Waffle Houses? Too funny that a absolutely gorgeous song is inspired by that.

  • Love Ruby & Carlos - such a great song. Folks - just cause James does this song is James + accoustic guitar, it is NOT the time to start talking to your friends at the club. Shut up and listen to the words... please?

  • right on!

  • This man brings great visuals...He is absolutely brilliant. What a song!

  • also, this song is very depressing, even for mcmurtry. hurricane party off the new album is also bleak even by his standards. great stuff

  • go see him if you get the chance!!!!

  • he listened to dylan a lot

  • i think tvz comes through in his sound more than anyone. though im sure he listened to plenty of dylan

  • I had never heard of McMurtry until I heard the song "Just Us Kids" on a cable music station. I'm binging now! What a wonderful musician and songwriter.

  • This is the greatest

  • James McMurtry is awsome there is very few people that talk to you sole like this he make you think. when we come home there is not a dame thing that seem the same. there are 1000s of us living on the streets or someones sofa or in jail and we are the man and woman that bleed for you as you sit home and watch the tube

  • GREAT song-writing! A very visual rendering of a story of love.

  • Amazing. As always. Thanks for posting this - can never get enough of his singing and his songs.

  • Thanks a million for this! Such a great song, but then that's to be expected from ol' James.

  • What a great story-teller/singer-songwriter you are! This is like a mini-novel set to music! Five stars and added to my favourites.
