I cannot believe over 6,000 views and 10 comments yet not one mention of the use of new bombing tactics and the B-52 BUFF in breaking the NVA siege at Khe Sanh.
@rampking1 Video tends to draw weak ego marines to come here whining about their beloved bureaucracy's failures. You are absolutely right--heavy bombers concentrating firepower saved ungrateful marine asses--like it saved grateful Army derrières in 1944 for the St. Lo break-out (Operation COBRA).
Khe Sahn for the Americans was about killing large numbers of NVA and diverting NVA from their original aims, the cities of South Vietnam. The South Vietnamese people simply did not rise up and support the communists as expected and NVA lost almost all of their men in the figthting and the people of the south told ARVN and US forces where to find the communists in order to kill them with great predjucie, communists lost big time, it was the press that made our military look bad, fucking reds.
FALSE. Khe Sanh was supposed to STOP NVA infiltration into South Vietnam. It failed because the gunslinger incompetent USMC refused to build a sensor/security fence. Khe Sanh was a diversion from the Tet offensive to rid the VC and embarass the U.S. = NVA win
get the book "Voice of Courage The battle for Khe Sahn" (google it) The author tells the REAL storyof the seige and it's NOT from the point of view of American war journalists! You'll be surprized! PEACE
The NVA Tet offensive diversionary attack on Khe Sahn failed for the NVA. The Tet offensive real attack on all of the south vietnam cities failed. The NVA lost almost all ground forces and were completely annilated. All epic military failures. The real reason behind the entire NVA gamble was a complete sucess. Turn the American public against the war. The leadership in NVA was willing to throw away 100 of their own to kill 1 american to achieve their goals. They did.
I've read khe sahn was a hell on the last 77 days of siege, about 300 rounds per day inside the base. I wasn't even born on that time, i'm only 32 years old but i've always admired you american veterans who had to go to that dirt place and sacrifice your life and youth, you deserve all the best from your country and people. here go my deepest respects to all of you!!! Joe from brazil!!!
Khe Sanh has become glorified since then. Figures that whenever there's huge military screw ups that end up in large numbers of our own dead, it becomes a legend instead of a lesson, to be remembered but never analyzed (D-Day, as you know, was one of those screw-ups but I think in a different way than Khe Sanh).

So let's LEARN from the defeat and LEARN how to close off closed terrain infiltration with sensor/security fencing, QRFs etc.
