WOW. I recall watching this game thinking that OSU got jobbed (I was rooting for OSU), but upon further review 37 years later, the ruling on the field is confirmed. I am pretty sure the snap was not accomplished in time, and even had it been, it would have been an illegal shift since most of the OSU players were not set. Official's mechanics sure have changed a bunch since then!
Thanks very much for posting--that was a lot of fun. It'd be great if you re-posted this without the final score at the top. I would've enjoyed it even more if I'd not known who was going to win.
Game played Nov. 9th. FINALLY, after 37 years, I am able to watch this game. I was at another college football game that afternoon, and only saw the highlights later that day. This is such a classic game, I can't believe that it has never been shown again. My brother was there, and has told me about waiting the 45 minutes in the stands before the official announcement was made. Then the party REALLY began!! Thanks so much for posting this!
I was at this game. Levi Jackson ran 88 yards and into my arms in the end zone. I see some comments here stating OSU won because no flag was thrown on the last play...no replay in place...etc. MSU picked off a pass during the last OSU drive but was not awarded the ball. So if you are going to cry about no flag..blah//blah..woof..woof..I'll trade you calls... MSU won this puppy. Eat it Woody.
I am not sure what authority the refs or the Big Ten Commisioner had at the time to rule who won the game by taking 45 minutes after the last play to decide who won the game. How was this allowed? They made their decision based on watching a reply of the game using ABC tape. Instant Reply rules were not in place at the time. The refs should have made the ruling on the filed right after the last play was run. They didn't do it and they should have.
The veteran Big 10 officiating crew indicated that the clock ran out prior to the snap, as well as the OSU players were not set for the snap. For the OSU fan who thinks they wuz robbed just look at the interception that was taken away from MSU at 5:28 of this film.
@chnuge You need to watch the footage closer. The ball is snapped before the ref signals time had ran out. Therefore, the only way the touchdown signaled by the Side Judge is not valid is if a flag is thrown for illegal procedure (i.e., not all the players for Ohio State were set). However, no flag was ever thrown. Therefore, since there wasn't instant reply rules in place then, by default, Ohio State must be declared the winner of the game.
1. Champ Henson..lol..too bad his helmet wasn't holding the ball.
2. I've seen way worse delay tactics then MSU displayed. Are they supposed to hurry for OSU?
3. There was no flag because the back judge was signalling the game was over. Therefore, no time left on clock = no flag...not hard to understand. If you look at the last play, the side judge who initially signaled TD, looked at the back judge signalling no time and quickly followed suit.
To elaborate on the, "Show more, " comment. The game does end if the offensive team commits a penalty on the final play. Half the Ohio State players were not set on the final play as in obvious in every replay.
The ending was unambigous. Although a somewhat drunk student, I helped remove one of the goal posts, and that puppy was obstinate as hell, and waited the entire 45 minutes until the outcome was unnanounced.
Those of us there had zero doubt as to who had won.
1) Ohio State scored on the next to final play. Champ Henson claims the goal line was under him.
2) Michigan State should have been called for delay of game prior to the last play. Michigan State players laid on the ground and didn't get up in a timely manner.
3) No penalty flag was thrown on the last play, which was signaled a touchdown. Therefore, I am not sure how Ohio State didn't win the game.
@goldenbear1986 1. Oh, if Henson says he scored then Ohio State won.
2. Michigan State had a clean interception at the beginning of the last drive that was overruled. But I guess only the calls that go in Ohio State's favor are correct, huh?
Ohio State got a free timeout when the clock was stopped for a measurement with about 30 second to play.
3. Are you blind? Are you saying the OSU players were set on the final play?
4. In a hundred years the score will still be MSU 16 - OSU 13.
2. Clean? It was ruled an incomplete pass on the field. It was very close, I will admit. However, you can't tell if the ball hit the ground or not.
3. No, not saying they were set. But, a flag wasn't thrown so it doesn't matter because of that. Touchdown signaled on last play is only invalid if time expired or a offensive penality is called. A flag wasn't thrown, so the touchdown is valid unless time expired.
My dad had tickets to this game and he declined going because he was working nights back then and he say's he would have been too tired. He regrets it now.

As for Henson there is no hesitation by the refs in marking him short and no OSU players appear to celebrate or act like they think he scored.
chnuge 7 months ago
@chnuge It was very close call since the ball was marked on the six inch line. I would love to see a side angle view of that play.

I would like to make three points:
1) Ohio State scored on the next to final play. Champ Henson claims the goal line was under him.
2) Michigan State should have been called for delay of game prior to the last play. Michigan State players laid on the ground and didn't get up in a timely manner.

I've been to over 200 college football games, in addition to this one, and seen thousands on TV. This is the most exciting one I have ever seen.
If I could somehow see 10,000 I feel sure that would still be true.
Probably the biggest win in MSU history, too.

Where did you get this? The Big Ten Network would pay huge money for this game if you have it all.
