135's are running above 400hp for a few hundred dollars in turbo rechipping. BMW will do it for you and still honor the warranty for more money. A hopped up 135 will turn in about 3.7 secs 0-60, with no gear change required.
One other thing... the 135i really has a 404hp engine, detuned to 300. For around $2500 you can have your BMW dealer dial it up for you without affecting the factory warranty. Add a $700 4" down pipe, and your in the mid-11s through the quarter mile and the mid-to-high 3s to 60.
Bottom line: DO NOT race a 135i, anything could be hiding under that hood.

I'm not sure you quite understand what this street term of rice came about, it has nothing to do with performance parts. A riced out civic could not possibly win a drag or circuit race with a z4 or a boxter because the closest to a performance part is has is probably an exhaust system not right for the car that shoots diarhea out the back.

R32 is cheaper (by about £4k!), more comfortable, quicker around a track, far more grippy, loads more room inside, it sounds better and it's better looking.
The exhaust is on the left the smoke is from the right wheel spinning after he hit the dirt right before causing a loss of traction in the same wheel. The other wheel didnt smoke because it maintained traction through the apex of the turn.

Bottom Line is you're getting a car that costs 3k less that performs better. You can say the 135i would destroy it, which it would, but it costs a HELL OF A LOT more than the R32. Either way I'm a purist and I don't dig on the '08 R32. My '04 would kick it's ass sans DSG.
OK, the cheaper Golf won, but try this race in the rain and the Golf would mince the bimmer. Also get a Golf with the even quicker DSG box and beat the BMW by an even bigger margin.
As for fun, the Golf is immense, 4wd so you can use the power safely in more conditions + suspension is excellent, steering gives great feedback and exhaust note is so addictive.

The wet conditions gave the BMW a slight disadvantage, I would be very interested to see what the result would have been had that been a dry day, all that extra traction and in bad conditions it was only slightly faster.
@strathpol They timed a top spec BMW 1 series against a Golf R32 on Top Gear about 5 years ago. The Golf was over a second faster... Clarkson actually said the BMW was more fun on a track but the Golf R32 "Hammered it" everywhere else.
@strathpol there was no 135i on this model. The 135i was released as 2009 model in 2008. Tiff is testing the 2006-07 models, which makes it a fair comparison...Yes, the 135i will destroy the R32 (305hbp vs 250hbp), but the BMW needs to be in the hands of very very very sharp and skilled driver, while the R32 can be fast as hell with an average driver behind the wheel...that's the beauty of the R32...in my opinion...
r32 is sooo much better, sounds great, looks great inside and out, handles great, spacious. regardless of speed and time. BMW sucks when it comes to hot hatch's, M3 is the best one that's it.
Haha, as to the inside/outside the R32 is boring as its manufacturer's name, "FOLKSwagen". BMW will always be better. The Golf got no style, no image, no prestige. BMW 1 Series got all of that.
r32 has 0.2 litres more enginevolume (the 135 actually has only 3 litres) but the BMW has 56hp and 80nm more power and torque. Also the BMW takes less petrol, but Í think nobody here cares. The only advantage of R32 is price, because it's about 6000€ cheaper and lighter, despite it has 4WD (which just wastes power at these size of engines after crossing 40mph).. Now honestly tell me, that Golf R32 is the better car. BMW-engineers are really ones of the best or THE best.
imo VW could have squeezed more hp outta the R32. The GTI produces ~200bhp and that's from a 2.0l straight 4 cylinder. With the added weight of the 3.2 in this one, 250bhp just isn't quick enough for the price tag.

Well you drive those 4 door shoe boxes. BMW can send a 335i convertible over here for me. We used to have them too. They didn't sell, because they were ugly and anyone needing that utility buys something larger. We pay about 1/3 what you do for fuel over here, so we don't drive diesels or shoe boxes. We DO like BMW & VW for their quality & performance. It's a different market, get over it.

well, first the BMW lost by an small difference, rwd is not precisely an advantage if the oponent is an awd, Golf has a bigger engine and therefore more torque and besides, which one is supposed to be sportier? its obvious that the R32, just for the looks you can tell that the Golf is an sporty model, while the 130i is really not that different from any other 1er

its the M sport version. thats as sporty as the BMW will get unless u consider the lightwieght m3 CSL but that has no stereo or luxury so its not really the same class. the BM will have its fun times but the golf is a better allrounder. thats why i have one :) dno where ur from but in the UK it rains a lot and you can drive with a lot more... errrm.... spirit in the AWD golf than the RWD BMW. the new golf R is coming. omg gimmie one!!

The wet conditions gave the BMW a slight disadvantage, I would be very interested to see what the result would have been had that been a dry day, all that extra traction and in bad conditions it was only slightly faster.

@strathpol They timed a top spec BMW 1 series against a Golf R32 on Top Gear about 5 years ago. The Golf was over a second faster... Clarkson actually said the BMW was more fun on a track but the Golf R32 "Hammered it" everywhere else.

@strathpol there was no 135i on this model. The 135i was released as 2009 model in 2008. Tiff is testing the 2006-07 models, which makes it a fair comparison...Yes, the 135i will destroy the R32 (305hbp vs 250hbp), but the BMW needs to be in the hands of very very very sharp and skilled driver, while the R32 can be fast as hell with an average driver behind the wheel...that's the beauty of the R32...in my opinion...

r32 is sooo much better, sounds great, looks great inside and out, handles great, spacious. regardless of speed and time. BMW sucks when it comes to hot hatch's, M3 is the best one that's it.

Haha, as to the inside/outside the R32 is boring as its manufacturer's name, "FOLKSwagen". BMW will always be better. The Golf got no style, no image, no prestige. BMW 1 Series got all of that.

r32 has 0.2 litres more enginevolume (the 135 actually has only 3 litres) but the BMW has 56hp and 80nm more power and torque. Also the BMW takes less petrol, but Í think nobody here cares. The only advantage of R32 is price, because it's about 6000€ cheaper and lighter, despite it has 4WD (which just wastes power at these size of engines after crossing 40mph).. Now honestly tell me, that Golf R32 is the better car. BMW-engineers are really ones of the best or THE best.

imo VW could have squeezed more hp outta the R32. The GTI produces ~200bhp and that's from a 2.0l straight 4 cylinder. With the added weight of the 3.2 in this one, 250bhp just isn't quick enough for the price tag.

I'm sorry sir boom, but if you were actually looking to BUY one of these cars, fifth gear is much better than top gear. Tiff and the blonde chick (sorry-forgot her name) are actual race drivers. They can actually drive the cars to the limit and tell you what it''ll do there. All fifth gear has is a fattie saying POWER, and a shortie who used to blow up trailers. The Stig can drive, but he doesn't tell you what it's like to dive, does he.

you're right, but that's not the reason why we watch top gear so fanatically is it ? It's the humour that makes it so popular, while fifth gear is a more strict car reviewing programme. I watch top gear to entertain myself, and fifth gear for the knowledge, as i think many others do

Dead on fella. I got my 350z on the good reviews from 5th gear, not the ripping that clarkson gave it (which he had to suck back on when top gear magazine voted it their car of the year in its category) 5th gear for serious reviews. Top Gear for entertainment value!

Well you drive those 4 door shoe boxes. BMW can send a 335i convertible over here for me. We used to have them too. They didn't sell, because they were ugly and anyone needing that utility buys something larger. We pay about 1/3 what you do for fuel over here, so we don't drive diesels or shoe boxes. We DO like BMW & VW for their quality & performance. It's a different market, get over it.
