@WKHSTUDIO there is nothing wrong with being call Miao/Miaozu...the term simply means rice sprouts...as Hmong are the first rice cultivator of China...the term that is degrading is Meo in reference to cat which is used by the Laos/Thai...think of this way...Hmong call all hauxai/hans/manchu "Suav" however that is not correct because they are not the same...there is nothing wrong with accepting the name Miao/Miaozu...its just like Hmong calling all Hans "suav"

Our ancestors never mentioned that we were called due to us being the first to cultivated rice, the word miao was a bad back then. But now we just start learning our history from people in china including our Hmong chinese people. And now we accepted whatever chinese gave us. we refused to learn from us Hmong out of china!

The Hmong from Laos think Hmong is equivalent to Miao, what I can tell you is Hmong is just a subgroup of Miao and not all the Miao call themself Hmong and a lot of them are much different from Hmong

Miao" (苗）literally means "seedling" in Chinese, which has no bad meaning as claimed by some Hmong from Laos. The bad word used for Miao in the history was "Man (蛮） or "miaoman (苗蛮）". So I hope Hmong can take it easy for the word "Miao", it doesn't mean anything bad at all.

Hey guys, Miao is the official name used in China for Hmong/Mong,Hmu,AHmao,Qho Xiong. The term Miao can't be taken away for these few reasons:1,Miao is already used as an official name for our group. 2, Miao has long been writen in history referrence to our group and to keep that history we must keep Miao.And there are l a lot more reasons but there is not enough space to list them here. So the easiest way is to keep it as is and add your subgroup.i.e.Miaohmong,Miaohmu,MiaoAhmao, Miaoqhoxiong.

All Miao are Hmong but not all Hmong are Miao. Miao was a term described by the Chinese for their long time conflict in the Chinese patrol region. Hmong were the higher classes, and Miao were the lower classes.

I think this show is in Qiandongnan Hmong Autonomous Prefecture. Because the Qiandongnan Hmong(Hmu) wear cloth like this. The girls of Hmu dialect are usually more beautiful than girls of other hmong dialects. Do u guy think so!

That's right. Miao is hmong. and hmong is miao. Miao is how chinese call us. Just like what we call the chinese "Suav". Ayouduo is Hmu, and Hmu is a dialect of Hmong. Just notice the "Hm" initial.

ok I really listen this time lol well I tried at least. from the beginning to about 1:39 she spoke Hmong in her dialect witch I understand some of it with a few words in Mandarin thrown like we do here in the US. We speak Hmonglish (Hmong with some english thronw in. but then at 1:40 it all Mandarin. (xing xie lai shou you) okay she was going too fast for me but she talking about our friend not having something and then saying thanks in the end. Havent been studing Mandarin lol

ah...i luv Ayudou. I so wanna see her in real life. i couldn't understand her as much as i would have liked, but i did understand some words. not to find interesting, i thought her voice at the begining sounds like a siren/alarm but it's very strong and i know it's the best taste for hmong chinese songs anyway. wow, she's so pretty...that guy also have a very handsome voice. thanks for sharing..i wish to visit the hmong in china soon in the future after graduatng too

Source of reference, I don't remember exactly where I got it from. It might have been one of the conferences I attended when Dr.Gary Yia Lee (Hmong Anthropologist from Australia) spoke on the Hmong.

The term Miao was documented in Chinese history for thousand of years. It was not until 1911 that the term "Hmong" appeared Chinese text. Miao is the long version of the Hmong history, Hmong is the short version. I prefer to be the long version; therefore, I am Miao Zu.

no. that is incorrect. miao is not a slang. so such thing as slang. hmong is a self-given name. many miao groups have self-given names like hmu, ahmao, ghamong and etc.. all derived from the term Miao or Ahmaud according to ancient folktale. white hmong pronounce MONG with a silent H making it sounds like HM-ONG while green hmong pronounce MONG with NO h and it sounds like MOWN. we are the same people regardless..

@niamtxiv According world history, the term Miao means barbarian, and the Hmong term means modernized Hmong (civilized, educated -literacy, and peace loving peopled). All Miaos are Hmong, but not all Hmong are Miaos. In Hmong society, Hmong always Hmong. Hmong Chinese, Hmong Vietnamese, and before GVP Hmong Laotians were proudly accepting the term Miao labeling.

Hey Folks, the world is no longer isolated. Hmong are very driven, just imagine how few we are, yet many have reached financial and celebrity stardom. Due to discrimination and other factors, Hmong didn't have the opportunities that others have. Now, the Hmong in the USA and around the world are being well educated, which opens doors to many endeavors.

LOL at some of the comments here. You American and Southeast Asian Hmongs should keep your psychological problems to yourselves. Ayouduo is Chinese and is Miao, and I am sure she is damn proud of it. And she is NOT Hmong. She is from a different tribe, Hmu. Call her a Hmong to her face and she will probably be damn offended. You guys should either accept the Miao name or keep your own separate identity as the Hmong. Stop trying to force your tribal name on the rest of the non-Hmong Miao people.

actually you're right we were powerful but that wasn't the problem. The Chinese lost to us over and over after each dynasty. We were defeated because the Chinese Emperor kept taking over smaller towns to gain more power. In the end, Hmong lost the war and were forced to move to the mountains or either be slaughtered.
