A call for social responsibility from a company that is not completely socially responsible, but better than others. Try to get Fair Trade coffee at Starbucks whenever you can.
@K8eeCyo how in the world is this brainwashing. true it may be unethical to encourage people to vote to get free coffee but if an ad like this makes non-voters think about voting it is all for a good cause.
@dave909 not at all. It's the false impression that your vote does anything to begin with. This is not a democracy but they are making every effort to convince the public that it is. Capitalists make money if the population is under control like that.

Going to Starbucks isn't even about the coffee. It's about just having social time with your friends. So if you don't like the coffee then don't drink it. And stop being little bitches about it arguing on Youtube posts.
its not a free coffee that brings me to vote or whatever...but in America, the rate is really low, because people dont recognize themself in their government. obama brought more people to poll, but not a lot, but he broiught some marginal. in America, people have more important thing in mind than going to vote. I dont think in America has law that give 5 hours to workers for goin to vote like in Quebec does. Its sad that people dont go voting
The USA has 2 political parties and not one. Well that is only because two gives the illusion of choice. My country has 6-7 parties to choose btw. Not the best democracy but atleast it is better then the US. Your country is own by the big corporations, bankers etc. The elections is just a big show were 2 so called parties throw shit at eachother, exactly like wrestling. A huge well organised show to keep the majority happy and give them an feeling of power and that there votes make a difference.
Its not about the fucking coffee, the point of the commercial was to get people voting, which in itself is better than any free cup of questionable coffee. And yeah, it probably did raise business for Starbucks, but if you haven't noticed, no matter what, a Business is a Business and they are ALWAYS looking for ways to expand their business. So get over the whole "Starbucks is addicting people to their coffee" because thats the way it is. Vote for America and fuck doing it for coffee.

Starbucks coffee sucks. It tastes like poison. I tried some, it is like sh.t. Don't try it for free, even if they pay you to try. I think, what they are trying to do is to addict people to their coffee.
free coffee? its shit in a cup, and free is still overpriced. how 'cool' that starbucks also works to enrol young people into Obamas youth brigades, yay! if only starbucks was around in Hitlers time, how cool that would have been...
hey... i'm not sure i want MORE than coffee... i mean, that would really send me! my energy level -- shot to the stars.... wait! it's STARBUCKS -- No thank-you! the buck stops here!! and the end is a certain fall. (the "creative" use of The Word is messing with my constellation! )
Here we go again... is starbucks wanting to "teach the world to sing" like coke did in the 70's?
starbucks spend millions on advertising to distract from what it really does to our society and economy. it steals buissness from small independent shops and supports israel financially. as well as ripping us off and placing them all over the place, oh and leaving there taps runnin all of the time. simply put, screw starbucks.
In response to the freak thats hairy. Did you know that Starbucks was only one coffee shop located at Pikes Place Market in Seattle during the 1970's?So when you go off that it steals buisness of local coffee shops, remember it had it's roots as an independent coffee shop. Why wouldn't you support Isreal?Did you know that the company spends money financing the villages in which they harvest the coffee beans? Oh and nobody is telling you to spend anything, It's the consumers choice.
It is true that it steals business from small business owners. It had stolen from us,too. This company pay landlords to kick the previous tenants and kill their businesses. Besides, they don't know what a good coffee is. Starbucks coffee sucks. It is a poisonlike coffee. Starbucks already closed thousonds of its stores already. Even McDonalds coffee is much better.

It is no accident that placement on the ballot and even the sound of the candidates' names can determine the outcome of an election, esp when both candidates are not well-known. All because so many people vote mindlessly.

Dude, I work at a starbucks, yeah, we used a lot of coffee, but the tip jar was so fuckin full it was funny, half the people didn't realize their drink was going to be free, so they put the money they would have used to pay for it into the tip jar instead. Must have gotten at least a few hundred in tips in the five hours I worked today
This video is so true. Anyone out there that is eligible to vote, go do it. I would vote but I am not yet old enough...If you don't vote, and you don't like the next president, you can't complain...you had your chance.
for the idiot underneath me, all it takes is the ability to READ and have a pulse. voting is a right and a privilege. naive people like him make this country sour.
I respect that Starbucks doesn't ask you to vote for a specific candidate. They are merely asking us to exercise our right as US Citizens to vote. That's class right there.
legally they can't ask you to vote for a specific candidate. In fact, they can't give free coffee to ONLY those that vote. Everyone get's free coffee today if they ask for it, regardless of voting. Campaigning laws.
Everyone's whining about starbucks, whatever their coffee is tasty, albeit pricey. If you don't like it then don't drink it. I think their point is they just want people to vote. That's everyone's point around election time.

It's good to care. But it's just as important to think.
Leftist philosophy encourages people who care to act (with a sense of moral imperative) without honestly considering the real-world consequences of their actions. But every government "solution" to social problems has had precisely and entirely the opposite effect to the program's stated intent. This is incalculably destructive.
Care, yes.
But THINK, - and guard fiercely - the free-market incentives necessary for prosperity.
It's important to CARE, but we need to think about consequences too. People mistakenly think that the only way to care for humanity is through government actions. Although the intent is honorable, the real-life results are not good. Free-market incentives are good for everyone, and restrictions hurt everyone. Let business make money and stimulate the economy, and then take personal responsibility for yourself and help your neighbors.
The ad represents what is likely to be a trend of commercializing the cultural shift that Obamas candidacy has provoked. Advertising destroys what it uses. The more that Americans filter this historical moment through Starbucks or McDonalds or whatever soda or beer, the more distant it will become, and the more quickly we will forget the sense of agency, collectivity, and even duty that drove us to become more involved. Right now, the ad is okay. After the election, not okay.
Nice comparisons with "The Girl Effect" everyone - the main difference being that "The Girl Effect" is not a shameless piece of opportunistic commercial advertising!
eventhough im not a starbucks supporter, but i do in fact know that starbucks, although being the big capitalist pig they are, are actually quite socially engaged, and you cant really say that about most "other" capitalist establishment.
How do you figure that we are capitalistic pigs? You should connect with Starbucks partners in your local neighborhood Starbucks and find out what we are really all about. Capitalism would not allow us as partners to create our own volunteer events in stores or allow us to submit our ideas. Read either Seattle papers from last week or New Orleans papers from last week and see what the power of 10,000 managers and support partners did for the communities in New Orleans. I love SBUX.
they are, but it's still another marketing idea. in reality..coffee is cheap. they'll come in. get the free coffee and buy a biscotti to go with it.. and maybe one of those lame CDs... people will spend money after the free coffee
Agreed. They are a prime example of a company that can be BOTH -- a corporation that lives for profits AND socially aware. Regardless of how you feel about the company, or their product, I think this ad is very well done - very moving.
An incredibly powerful and awesome video. If you didn't know, here's an interesting fact, reported in Time or some magazine awhile back. Until now Starbucks has never done visual advertising, it has spread entirely by word of mouth and other media and entertainment means. The fact that this is the first commercial advertisement they do, for this reason(even though they are assured increased revenue, its not technically an ad for them.) is remarkable. I won't lie, it brought a tear to my eye.
who really cares where they got the idea from. the whole point of the video is to encourage people to vote. theyre just trying to get people out of their homes and make sure they vote. for the people who go everyday to starbucks anyways its a good reminder to go vote and this mornings cup of coffee is free. but go vote. thats what we should really be focusing on.

i appreciate your suggestion to keep a cool head, but i know the people who made girl effect, and i know for a fact that Starbucks/BBDO definitely DID NOT ask permission. they stole the intellectual property outright.
Unless it was actually copyrighted, which I doubt, it wasn't intellectual property. It was a fantastic idea, used for another fantastic cause.
Judging by the ideologies of both videos, I imagine that even if it was copied (which is not necessarily the case: I've seen similar commercials before), the creators of girl effect should be flattered, and pleased that their idea is further promoting a better world.
Anyway, I saw their video only b/c of this one. They should thank Starbucks! ;)
this video has an incredible impact. i wasn't a huge fan of starbucks, but i am now. people should realize how important it is to vote and make an impact in our country.
By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Thank you, thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourselves. Seriously though, if you are, do. No really, there's no rationalization for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers... /Bill Hicks
Shootspeople: I agree. Starbucks copied the concept of the Girl Effect video. But the songs are different. Both beautiful songs though. And I'm guessing by the same artist. Do you know the title to both songs?
the girl effect creators composed original music at elias arts in LA... not sure who to credit specifically, or even if the song had a specific title.
the two songs are technically different, but Starbucks obviously took cues from the original.
You know who loves Starbucks coffee...Bob Barr. And that's who I'll proudly be voting for on November 4th. I think it's awesome that Starbucks is putting this message out. Only half of Americans vote, and of those they are pretty much split down the middle. So Americans are letting 25% of our population pick our leader and space the future of the country. That's just not right. Get off you butts and vote America!
Sweet ...

Thank you STARBUCKS for a very simple message...

I don't see your point. So... starbucks shouldn't exist because some people can't afford houses or coffee? What's the connection here?
meleahrubino 3 years ago
eventhough im not a starbucks supporter, but i do in fact know that starbucks, although being the big capitalist pig they are, are actually quite socially engaged, and you cant really say that about most "other" capitalist establishment.
stonethrowingdevils 3 years ago 2
How do you figure that we are capitalistic pigs? You should connect with Starbucks partners in your local neighborhood Starbucks and find out what we are really all about. Capitalism would not allow us as partners to create our own volunteer events in stores or allow us to submit our ideas. Read either Seattle papers from last week or New Orleans papers from last week and see what the power of 10,000 managers and support partners did for the communities in New Orleans. I love SBUX.

they are, but it's still another marketing idea. in reality..coffee is cheap. they'll come in. get the free coffee and buy a biscotti to go with it.. and maybe one of those lame CDs... people will spend money after the free coffee
digitalpretzel 3 years ago
Agreed. They are a prime example of a company that can be BOTH -- a corporation that lives for profits AND socially aware. Regardless of how you feel about the company, or their product, I think this ad is very well done - very moving.

Actually I think it might be Michael Montes music in this video, same guy who did the music for the Canon Camera

Man I really like this ad especially the music. I wonder if I can learn to play that.

Yeah!!!!!
TABUR169 3 years ago
how can they be "desperate for buisness" if the coffee is free?
lovelovetennis 3 years ago 2
Also, spywez, what's up with the words of hate?
TABUR169 3 years ago
That be damn right
TABUR169 3 years ago
who really cares where they got the idea from. the whole point of the video is to encourage people to vote. theyre just trying to get people out of their homes and make sure they vote. for the people who go everyday to starbucks anyways its a good reminder to go vote and this mornings cup of coffee is free. but go vote. thats what we should really be focusing on.
hugekornfreak 3 years ago 4
Also, this one's about voting, stupid!

Wow. What a stupid hypocritical idea. Thanks Starbucks.

wow... you are right! they totally ripped off the girl effect video, even down to the music.
pretty bad move, starbucks... how embarrassing.

Maybe they asked for permission? I wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
i appreciate your suggestion to keep a cool head, but i know the people who made girl effect, and i know for a fact that Starbucks/BBDO definitely DID NOT ask permission. they stole the intellectual property outright.
pretty lame, right?
shootspeople 3 years ago
Unless it was actually copyrighted, which I doubt, it wasn't intellectual property. It was a fantastic idea, used for another fantastic cause.
Judging by the ideologies of both videos, I imagine that even if it was copied (which is not necessarily the case: I've seen similar commercials before), the creators of girl effect should be flattered, and pleased that their idea is further promoting a better world.
Anyway, I saw their video only b/c of this one. They should thank Starbucks! ;)

this video has an incredible impact. i wasn't a huge fan of starbucks, but i am now. people should realize how important it is to vote and make an impact in our country.
way to go Starbucks :D

I'm with you. I didn't like starbucks till I saw this commercial.

BBDO and Starbucks should be ashamed of themselves... such a blatant rip off is never okay.
look up "girl effect" on youtube.
shootspeople 3 years ago
I love the music, but the message is just wrong.
I don't believe we should be enouraging the millions that don't bother to get informed on the issues to vote.
A voter who falls for a few slick 30 second advertisements is not someone that should be deciding the course of the country.

what is the piano piece called????

By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Thank you, thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourselves. Seriously though, if you are, do. No really, there's no rationalization for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers... /Bill Hicks

Shootspeople: I agree. Starbucks copied the concept of the Girl Effect video. But the songs are different. Both beautiful songs though. And I'm guessing by the same artist. Do you know the title to both songs?
mundanelifeof 3 years ago
unfortunately i dont.
the girl effect creators composed original music at elias arts in LA... not sure who to credit specifically, or even if the song had a specific title.
the two songs are technically different, but Starbucks obviously took cues from the original.

The music is awesome. Who's the composer, anyone?
muzikonda 3 years ago
You know who loves Starbucks coffee...Bob Barr. And that's who I'll proudly be voting for on November 4th. I think it's awesome that Starbucks is putting this message out. Only half of Americans vote, and of those they are pretty much split down the middle. So Americans are letting 25% of our population pick our leader and space the future of the country. That's just not right. Get off you butts and vote America!
