I thought it was mostly battle between the god's of life and death. Life's battle was a failing one, so he created 4 beings to live out their lives, to experience everything human, and use them as warriors of life, in a climatic battle for the world balance.

Then again, i was 16 when i thought that up. Better than nothing though, right? :)
